Chapter Six
"Do you have other friends besides me?" Dante asked. Amy glanced at him with glassy eyes. "Not anymore." She shook her head and stood up. Dante reached for her hand, surrounding it with his warm hand. Amy glanced back at him.
"What's wrong?" Dante asked. Amy slipped her hand out of his grasp.
"I Just...I'm sensitive to some subjects." She turned away, hiding her face with her hair.
"Like math?" Dante stifled a laugh. Amy turned to meet his eyes, her cheeks red from blushing.
"No, you idiot!" Amy shouted as she giggled and shoved his shoulder. He held her hand to his chest. She felt his heart beating faster.
"I shouldn't have asked." Dante looked down.
"You're fine. I'm used to everyone asking me questions."
"Like what?" Dante looked up, his heart jumped a beat.
"They always ask me why I'm so quiet, or why I draw so much, or why I'm so pale." Amy turned her face away.
"Amy, you're...fine." Dante pulled her head to face his. He leaned in closer, and she smelled his minty breath. Amy jumped as rapid knocks met the door. Dante sighed and pulled away from Amy. He opened the door.
"Dante, bro!" Amy heard a man's voice shouting.
"Look, man, I'm not in the mood for your craziness." Amy heard Dante say. She sighed and disappeared into his room. She stepped into the closet and shut the door slowly.
Dante heard a click as his friend shoved him aside.
"What, you have some super secret secret you're keeping from me?" Glynn scoffed.
"Pfft, no, w-why would you think that?" Dante scoffed.
"No reason, you're just acting weird. I'm your best friend, so you should be happy to see me."
"I'm always happy to see you, but I was just dealing with some...stuff." Dante paused.
"Stuff? Oh, vamp stuff." Glynn scoffed. Amy chuckled quietly in his closet. Glynn opened Dante's fridge and started rummaging through his food.
"Hey!" Dante scoffed.
"You know you love me!" Glynn mumbled with a slice of cheese hanging out of his mouth.
"Such a douche." Dante whispered.
"Well, I'm off. Just came here to steal your food." Glynn smiled as he walked to the door. He opened it and slammed it behind him. Dante heard a door open and turned to see Amy leaning against the wall, a smile spread across her cheeks.
"What?" Dante asked.
"You tried to kiss me." Amy kept the smile on her face as she crossed her arms.
"So what, maybe I did." Dante pouted.
"I'm not complaining, I'm just stating the obvious. I should go. My stepmom's gonna yell at me." Amy snatched her bag off of the chair and leaned on the door.
"Aren't you gonna leave?"
"I don't wanna run into your friend. He seems like he'd flirt with me." Amy chuckled.
"Oh, okay." Dante sat on the chair and sighed.
"What...?" Amy hesitated.
"Sorry for trying to kiss you." Dante turned to face her.
"Don't apologize. I'm fine. We're still friends. I'm gonna go." Amy pulled the door open and shut it as she left his apartment.
"I kinda want us to be more than friends." Dante whispered. Amy scoffed as the words echoed in her head. Her super hearing wasn't always a gift.
"'I want us to be more than friends'?" Amy repeated, just before she ran home.
She locked her window and threw her bag onto her desk chair. She laid in her bed and hugged her pillows. Amy heard her stepmom shouting and sat up. She listened in on the conversation.
"That's not gonna make up for this, Benjamin!" Jessica shouted. Amy opened her door and saw Alice crying quietly beside her.
"Al?" Amy whispered. Alice looked up and sniffled.
"It's nothing." She pulled herself to her feet.
"Alice, what did you hear?" Amy crossed her arms.
"Not a thing." Alice looked up at Amy and sighed. "I heard that dad was planning to leave a little early. As in two days from now." Alice wiped away the tears from her cheeks.
"What? But...but he can't! We were told we had more time." Amy felt herself tearing up.
"I guess they needed more men than they thought." Alice shrugged. Amy marched passed Alice and stomped into the kitchen. She met her stepmom's eyes and stole the phone from her.
"Amy?!" Jessica shouted.
"Dad, you can't go. It's too early. I...I need you. You and Jessica." Amy sniffled.
"Don't worry, honey. Everything's gonna be fine. I'll be back in 6 months. I promise." Amy's dad spoke with sweetness in his voice and truth in his words. Amy dropped the landline and sobbed. Jessica grabbed the phone.
"Sorry, babe. Amy's gonna be fine...alright, I'll see you at home in a little. Alright, love you, too." Jessica hung up the landline and looked back. Amy slammed her door and threw herself onto her bed. She wiped her cheeks clear of tears and sighed. I hate him. He shouldn't get deployed so soon. Leaving his family for the military. This sucks... Amy sat up to a knock on her door.
Alice stepped into her room and shut the door behind her.
"I'm sorry about dad getting deployed. I know that he's really all you've got...since the wreck two years ago." Alice sat on the end of the bed.
"I'm fine. I've gotten over my mom's death, Al."
"Don't you wanna talk about it? Not once have you talked to mom about it. Or dad." Alice lowered her voice.
"Because I have nothing to say..." Amy whispered.
"But, your mom died two years ago, and you aren't even that upset about it. Plus, your dad left your mom for my mom 13 years ago. You aren't the least bit mad about that?" Alice asked.
"Of course I am upset, but I've learned to ignore it. Please get out before I get madder." Amy looked down.
"Amy, please, talk to me. We may only be half sisters, but we're still related." Alice reached out to hold Amy's hand. Amy looked up with fangs and red eyes as soon as she felt Alice's touch. Alice pulled back with a gasp. "Sorry." She sighed, rubbing her upper arms.
"Just get out." Amy scoffed.
"Seriously?" Alice asked, slight anger in her eyes. Amy nodded as her fangs and red eyes disappeared. Alice stood up and opened the door. "Good night." Alice said shakily before leaving the room. Amy sat back and clicked her lamp off. She stared up at the ceiling and sighed.
Amy awoke to her sister, Alice, shaking her awake. "Mom said we need to get going. She's got somewhere to go, so you're walking me to school today." Alice left the room with a smirk across her lips. Amy jumped out of her bed, threw on her uniform, and grabbed her backpack. She fixed her hair and left her room. Alice was waiting outside, her arms wrapped around herself. Amy left the house and heard Alice shivering. "How are you not freezing?" She complained.
"I'm not as sensitive as you seem to be." Amy grinned. "Now come on, we'll be late." Alice followed Amy around their neighborhood until they reached Alice's school.
"I'll see you at home." Alice smiled sweetly. Amy nodded. Alice wrapped her arms around Amy's waist. Amy held her wrist up to her nose. "Oh! I totally forgot...I'm sorry." Alice jerked herself away from her sister. Amy nodded and passed by her. She turned back and saw her sister waving. Amy started running, and didn't stop until she got to her school. She stepped through the doors and saw Dante standing by her locker. She scoffed and walked to him.
