Chapter 20

Riley:

It's 5:55 right now, and I'm freaking out. I told Alex I was going out to heggy's to meet up with someone I met at a party who I recently got close to. I didn't have the heart to tell him that I knocked her up.
"Riley?" a soft, gentle voice squeaks from behind me. I turned around to see Amanda standing there. I stand and pull out the chair across the table, offering it for her to sit. As soon as she was seated, I sat back down.
"Are you keeping it?" I know I should've had some sort of conversation before jumping straight into it, but I need to know. It's my kid.
"Yeah. I am. If you don't wanna be around, I understand. That's ok. I just may need some help every now and then. You know. Financially." She looks extremely nervous. Hell, I get it. I am too. We're gonna have a fuckin baby.
"I wanna be there for you, and the baby, but... how am I gonna tell my family? They just came to terms with me being gay. And, and how am I gonna tell Alex?" I grab my milkshake and take a huge sip. This doesn't feel real. I'm actually gonna be a dad.
"If you want, we can tell them together." She already knew Alex. I introduced her to him, and came clean to Alex when we got back together. He was ok with it, but neither of us expected this to happen.

Alex:

     "WHAT?" I stand and scream.
"I know. Look, it won't affect us at all. Ok? You're still the one I wanna be with. We're just gonna add a baby into the mix of things." Riley tries to calm me down, but I can't calm down. I'm furious. I feel betrayed, and no words can describe how sick I feel. The room starts to spin.
"Leave me the fuck alone." I walk out of the room and walk into the bathroom, locking the door behind me. I see the sparking porcelain bowl out of the corner of my eye, and I know exactly what I have to do to make myself feel better.

Riley:

I hear muffled gagging coming from the bathroom. Oh god. I can't believe this. I try to open the door, but he locked it. "Alex. Please open the door. Please." He doesn't answer. I hear muffled crying, and then more gagging. "ALEX! PLEASE STOP!" He was doing so well, and I ruined him.
"Leave me alone!" He yells through the door.
"Alex, we can't leave you alone. We need you to come out here. Please." Amanda seemed to work, because before I knew it, the lock on the door clicked and he walked back into the room, wiping his mouth with his sleeve.
"Alex. I am so sorry. We didn't plan for this to happen. I promise. Nothing else is ever going to happen." Amanda rubs his back softly, as he sobs softly into his pillow. "Hey, we have to go tell his parents real quick. Can we trust you to be alone up here, or do we have to take you with us?"
"Just go... I wanna be alone right now..." he's heartbroken. I haven't seen him like this since Lilly died.
Amanda and I walk downstairs after Alex fell asleep, and we walk into the kitchen. This is the moment I've been dreading since she told me.
"Mom? Dad?" My voice cracks, and tears start to well up in my eyes. "I have something I need to tell you." I start to go back to the day I told my parents I was gay.

"Mom, dad? I have something I need to tell you." I start crying. This is the hardest thing I will ever have to do.
"Son, we're a little busy. Can it wait?" My dad says while staring at what I can only assume are patient files, and mom has her computer open to a email from her boss.
"It can't. I have to say it now." I start to cry, and that's when they actually look at me.
"Oh honey. Are you ok? What's wrong?" My mom stands and walks to me. She grabs my face softly, and wipes away my tears. "Here, sit down."
I take a seat and a deep breath.
     "Please don't hate me..."
"Oh honey. We could never hate you." My mom says with a gentle, and kind smile.
"I... I'm gay..." it comes out almost as a whisper, but I don't think it could have come out any louder.
My parents stop dead in their tracks. And look at each other with wide eyes.
"Honey, we know. We've known for such a long time. Oh, thank you for telling us." They both walk over and embrace me in a tight hug. Never in my life have I ever felt so loved...

"Riley, we really don't have time to stand here all day. What is it?" My dad is impatient.
"Richard!" My mother gives him the death glare.
     "Yes Mandy?" He's clueless.
"Go ahead Riley. You can tell us anything."
I take a look at Amanda and she nods. "This is Amanda. I... She's pregnant."
"We're not giving hand outs. Sorry." Dad just looks back at his patient file.
"Richard!" My mother walks over to him and slaps him on the back of the neck. "Our son is talking, and we are going to be respectful and listen to him. Am I understood?" He just nods in return.
"She's pregnant, and... it's mine..." I look at the floor. I can't even look at them. The disappointment on their faces would break me.
"But, I thought you were gay. Is this some sort of joke? Cause it's not funny, and it's wasting my time." My dad is a pompous ass. He can never just keep his mouth shut.
"I am gay. I was drunk, and it happened once, and now I'm about to be a dad, but I can guarantee that I'll be a better dad than you are!" I slap my hand over my mouth. I didn't mean to say that.
"Excuse me?" My father stares at me with rage. "Amanda, young lady, what did your parents say about this?" His attention drifts from me to her. This can't be good.
"I don't live with them sir. They kicked me out a couple of years ago."
"And where do you live now?"
     "In my car sir."
"Not anymore. You'll move in with us. Riley will make up one of the guest rooms for you, and make the other into a nursery. And Riley." His cold eyes shift to me.
     "Yes sir?" I ask timidly.
"Don't you ever disrespect me again. Let this be your one warning."
     "Yes sir. I'm sorry sir."
