Chapter 21
Riley:
It's been 8 months, and I'm getting extremely nervous. Alex still doesn't talk to me much, mom and dad stop talking every time I walk in a room, and Amanda has exactly 1 week until her due date. We decided to keep the gender a secret, but we know that no matter what, the baby will be loved. I hear water hit the floor, but I don't bother with it. It's probably nothing anyways.
"Riley?" I look up from my computer to see a horrified look on Alex's face. He has Amanda right next to him. My eyes leave him and go to her, eyeing her until I reach the floor. There's a puddle at her feet. Even though I may not know much, I know exactly what's going on now.
"Fuck." I run my hands through my hair quickly. "Let's go have a baby." I try to joke, but the words barely leave my mouth. It's actually happening to me. I'm gonna be a dad. Alex and I both grab one of her arms and lead her down the stairs to the car. Within 10 minutes we see the sign for the emergency room.
Alex:
I hate hospitals. It feels like I've spent my whole life in them. Why did this have to happen? I know this should be a happy occasion, but to me it's not. I wish it would've never happened... now my boyfriend's about to be a dad, and I don't know how to cope. This is all too much. We called his parents the second we got here, so now I'm stuck waiting for them to arrive by myself. He went back with her to make sure she's ok, and I hate him for it. We shouldn't even be in this mess. It's all my fault...
"Alex? Where is he?" Richard's low and gravely voice echoes in the empty room. He's followed by Mandy and Jennifer.
"He's back with her right now. They've been in there a while. He told me he'd come get us as soon as he can."
"Honey," a sweet, milky voice calms my anxiety, "are you alright? How are you holding up?"
"I'll be ok. Thanks Mandy." His mother was one of the kindest ladies I have ever met.
Another hour passed before Riley's soft and gentle face appeared.
"Well son?" His father actually seemed to care about him for once. In the entire time I've known him, this was the very first time he didn't have a patient file in front of him.
"Well... it's..." he paused. Everyone was sitting on the edge of our seats waiting to hear. Was it a boy? Was it a girl? Is he ever gonna tell us? It felt like ages before he finally spoke again, and when he did, all I could do was cry.
