Zap - Chapter 12
My first thoughts was that I didn't want to go training, but as I assessed the idea, I guess it would be okay to refine my skills a bit more. ("So I could whack Mathew upside the head," Naomi had said before we left.)
I picked up the duffel bag containing my suit and walked into the bathroom to change. I heard Naomi pulling her suit out from under her bed and changing, too, so I quickened my pace a bit. After putting my suit on and tying my laces, I noticed my hair again. I pulled it back into a ponytail and walked back out of the restroom ready to go.
Naomi was in her white super suit with the DA logo in front of of it, pulling up her boots and tying on her mask. I put my blue mask up to my face and tapped the bridge of my nose and it tied itself, adjusting to the shape of my face. Naomi and I finished with our suits and we opened the door. We climbed down the stairs and flew into the training facility (literally) and saw Mathew in one of the spectator's chairs. She hissed under her breath slightly and I followed her to the other corner of the room.
We landed gently (a.k.a. Naomi landed perfectly and I fell on my stomach) on the soft grass of the arena in front of some punching bags. Naomi pointed at a target and looked at me.
"Hit that bull's eye with your electricity," she commanded, standing away from the target a bit more. I reached my hand out to the target self-consciously, glancing around. I was relieved when I saw that no one was looking. Returning my attention to the target, I let out a gentle bolt that reached one of the outside rings. Naomi motioned for me to do it again. I let out another bolt, this one more harmful. It hit the outer ring of the bull's eye and the target smoked gently. Naomi pointed at it one more time and I let out a frustrated fatal bolt. It hit smack dab in the middle and the target exploded into pieces.
Disappearing Act turned to me with an impressed look. I blushed lightly and she gestured toward a target that was farther away. I hit that one and the next one, only taking one or two tries at the bull's eye.
After we were done, she put down some notes onto a clipboard that one of the staff had handed her and we moved on to another piece of training equipment. This one was just looked like a regular punching bag, except it reminded me of one of the ones Po used in Kung Fu Panda. It had poles sticking out of it that were as long as my arms with metal spikes on them. I turned to Naomi for instructions.
"Okay, so throw a punch at it," she told me simply. I threw a punch at the bag and as soon as my fist made contact with its midsection, it bounced back and hit me on the face with the spikes, ripping a cut on my cheek. I fell back on my butt, holding my hand to my face. I pulled my hand away and saw it was covered in blood. I winced slightly but stood back up. I could feel the eyes of several supers on me now, judging my every move. I stiffened slightly, then calmed down again.
You're fine. Remember what your dad taught you.
I gritted my teeth together. Dad. I threw another punch at the bag, my stance shifting to a ready position and my hands blocking my face. The bag returned it, this time on my legs. I jumped up and kicked the bag in the midsection. It swung another punch at me and I ducked just on time. I continued this over and over, my eyes sparking slightly. My dad. At the thought of him, my suit charged up by itself and I threw a punch so packed with electricity, it shriveled and shocked the ground beneath my feet. Naomi jumped into the air at the right second and didn't get shocked.
"Nice hit," a voice said to my left. I swung a punch at them, this one not charged up. Mathew blocked it with one arm and tried to side-kick my gut. I grabbed his foot then twisted and pushed it, making him back up. I threw a round kick at his head but he blocked it and punched my stomach. I resisted doubling over and front kicked his chest.
"What... Are... You... Doing?" Mathew panted, blocking another one of my kicks. I scowled that it didn't hit him, then punched his shoulder.
"You made... Disappearing Act... Mad!" I returned, swiveling a turning side kick at him. He didn't manage to block him and got a heel in his gut.
"Do you know... why?" Mathew asked, throwing an uppercut at my chin. I swiped his hand away then jabbed his chest. I mumbled a "no."
"Because she thinks I made you sad!" He whispered at me as I lunged towards him to punch him. I faltered and he picked me up by my waist. I blushed madly and tried to fly away from him.
"Set me down!" I shouted. He laughed.
"Only if you tell me if you were sad," He replied. I tried to kick him in the stomach, but he just rolled his eyes at my feeble attempts.
"I was not," I said back down to him, crossing my arms. Naomi suddenly appeared behind Mathew and kicked him in the back of the knees to make him fall. He tripped over and collapsed onto me, still holding my waist. I shrimped out from below him and stood up. Naomi had disappeared again, and I floated into the air with tears brimming my eyes. I floated through the doors and back into my dorm, not looking back once. Naomi wasn't there, so I just laid in bed for a few minutes. Then I suddenly had the urge to go get an ice cream cone or a milkshake.
I flew out the open window, still in my suit. I glided through the stars, surprised at how dark it had gotten during training. My eyes drifted down to the green block we called the park and saw lamp posts light up the night seconds later. Then I flew into the city.
Completely different story. The bright lights, the loud music that was playing, the honking horns of cars below me. The shining bulletin boards blinded me a bit, made me falter in my flying. Noticing my favorite ice cream shop, I rubbed my eyes and swooped down. I walked in just as they were about to close, so I ran to the counter.
"Wait!" I yelped. The middle-aged lady at the front counter chuckled a bit, then stopped walking to the back and greeted me instead. Her name tag said "Mrs. Lorenzo."
"What would you like, Super?" She asked me in a heavily accented voice. I guessed she was Hispanic, like me. A lot of people said I didn't look Hispanic because I didn't have black hair or tan skin. But, I could speak fluently.
"A vanilla milkshake, to go please," I answered, smiling at her. She got a plastic cup from a racket, washed it, scooped some ice cream into it, then shook it a bit. I love how they make their milkshakes. She handed it to me and told me the price. I gave her the money and a bit of a tip for not slamming the door on my face.
I slurped on my milkshake slowly as I flew around, slightly distracted by all the lights. I needed to go somewhere that was slightly away from all this commotion, and I knew the perfect place. One of the many landmarks this city was known for.
I shot off towards the top of the Empire State Building. When I got to the very summit, I was so proud of myself, because let me tell you - that climb was not a quick one. I sat down on the very edge, watching the busy city below me, drinking my milkshake, happily away from Mathew and the Academy. I felt a breeze whip through and untie my hair. I grabbed the rubber band before it could fly away and just slipped it onto my wrist. I swung my legs around like a bored 4-year-old and finished half of my ice cream milkshake.
"Hi there!" a voice greeted beside me. I jumped and threw my milkshake at them, scared half to death. I was barely able to keep myself on the building, gripping the edge for support. I looked to my left, and, seeing Shadow there, naturally, I shocked him lightly.
"Ow! What was that for?!" He protested, returning the bolt but catching my milkshake with his other hand. I rubbed my shoulder and reached for my milkshake.
"Well, aren't we supposed to be arch-nemeses or something?" I asked, not shocking him again. I was so confused.
"Only when I'm doing something bad!" He complained. I rolled my eyes and snatched my milkshake from his hand. Another milkshake popped out of the shadows and I practically choked on mine in surprise.
"This is my milkshake! Chocolate ice cream, to be exact," He laughed, picking it up. I scrunched up my nose in disgust.
"You like chocolate?" I asked. He stopped drinking is and looked up at me in confusion.
"You like vanilla?" He returned, making the same face as me. I nodded.
"Duh. Vanilla's better," I said. He laughed mockingly and handed his to me, taking mine from my hand. My brows furrowed in confusion.
"We'll try each others and if we don't like it, we agree to disagree, alright?" he explained. I shrugged.
"1...2...3!" We both took a sip at the same time. I scrunched up my face, but it eventually went back to normal. I took another sip. It wasn't half bad. It may even be better than vanilla.
"This is better than vanilla/chocolate!" We both exclaimed in unison. I blushed slightly and laughed with him, incredibly angry at the city that never sleeps for being bright enough to show my blush. He handed mine back to me and I returned the action, floating up from my seat and into the air. He did the same and held out a hand for me to shake.
"Till we fight again, my mortal enemy?" He asked in a gentleman's voice. I sniggered.
"Till we fight again."
With that, we both flew off in opposite directions.
