Chasing Thirty One
It’s evening in Afton, on the last month of winter. The snow is still piling up in most areas in the town. Freya goes back from college and is going to make a visit to the grill yet she’s not in the mood. Last week, Will and Melissa tried to feel her blood and they both came to the same conclusion that something was changing in her blood. However, they couldn’t tell exactly what or how or why yet. It has got her so pensive. When she is like that, she’s either being paranoid or careless like she gives no damn about it.
Freya makes a turn and decides to make a visit to another place she never visits. Now that she’s thinking about it, she gets excited since it’s the first time she’ll see Jamie’s place. They always meet either in the grill, lakes or her place, but mostly in the lakes and the grill. Those have become their escape places. They find each other there even if they don’t usually plan it. In less than 30 minutes, Freya arrives to where Jamie lives. She has known from her brother and Jamie himself.
It’s easy to find a house in the most elite complex in Afton. His house is quite distinctive, the only one with the wide front yard and seemingly back yard too. It is definitely too big for one person. She thinks that that house can possibly load people in this whole complex. She’s interested to explore the house which looks pretty classy and old.
“Freya!” Jamie opens the door as soon as Freya presses the doorbell. “Why are you coming here?” he adds. “I mean, I will be at the grill tonight. I think it’s still too early.”
Freya laughs. “I’m not allowed to see you outside the usual places?” she looks him up and down. “Why are you suited up in your own home?” he wears his usual attire, shirt, vest and jeans. “I thought you’d be walking around the house naked since you’re all alone by yourself.”
He rakes his finger on the back of his head and smiles slightly. “I’ve been out running errands and just got back, besides I like to be ready whenever it is. I always have something to do around the town anyway.”
“So can I come in or not?” Freya takes a step forward but she can only get right on the line of the door where Jamie is standing so they stands few inches from each other.
“Come on in.” He lets out a deep breath and gives a space for her to come in. “You seem like you could use some talk. And drinks.”
Freya laughs and steps inside the house. “I like you, Walker. You always know just what I need.” She looks around with excitement written on her face. “You have a terrific home, Walker. I should visit more often here.” She turns around to Jamie who walks a little behind her, next to her.
“Do you want a tour?” he offers as they walk in the center room where there is a fireplace.
She throws herself on the big couch. “Maybe next time.”
Jamie takes a seat on the single couch. “Why the pensive look?” he looks at her attentively.
“There is something in my blood.” She takes off her leather jacket and looks at her veins in her wrist as if she can see what’s inside the veins. “It’s changing me.”
Jamie intensifies his gaze trying to see what the difference is. Instead he seems to be stuck in his own thoughts while staring at her face, from the eyes to her lips. He doesn’t realize how long he stays silent, gazing until she slaps his cheek lightly.
“It’s not something you can literally see, Walker. Stop staring!” she then gets up. “Can I have some drinks?” she sees mini bar next to the center room
Jamie blinks his eyes and shakes his head to get himself focus again. He catches up on her. “I’ll get it for us.” He jogs a little to get to the mini bar first. Freya takes a seat on a stool when he stands behind the counter. “So what changes that you feel? When did it start?” he asks after making some booze for her.
“Can you sit next to me? You’re not bartending and there’re only the two of us here.” She waves to the stool next to her. “I love what you do with this. The color is outstanding.” The mini bar has dark red mix dark brown color. It matches with the whole house which is dominated with wooden furniture.
When Jamie is sitting on the stool next to her, she starts explaining. “I’ve felt it since I spent some nights in my uncle house. I can’t really tell how it feels. Last time I was in Italy with Alessandro. The sunshine made me weak.” As if she just realizes it herself, she taps Jamie thigh a little too hard that Jamie’s leg jolts. “That little prick!” she drinks up her drink then continues. “I need to see her. It must have had something to do with her.”
“I’ll come with you.” Jamie says and gulps his own drink. “Why do you think that though?”
Freya ticks her glass and Jamie pours into her glass. “It’s a long story. Have you ever heard of the Lorenzo?”
“The wonder hands of savior?” Jamie nods. “They’re pretty known across the state for the last ten years. I didn’t know they’re your relatives.”
“There’s a lot you don’t know about me yet.” She chuckles.
Jamie is intrigued. He leans in closer to her with his hand on the table counter. “There’s a lot you don’t about me either. But we have all night here now and tomorrow on the road trip. And all the time we can have. I’m not going anywhere.”
“Sounds like a plan. I’ll need more drink.” She winks and her lips form into a smile.
They spend all night sharing about their lives and experiences but mostly Freya talks more. She fills him in on her history, family and adventures. Jamie tries not to get drunk so he stops after a few drinks. He wants to listen to everything she says thoroughly. She loves sharing stories that she gets up and walks a little here and there while talking with hands and body gestures. Despite feeling tired, he tries to hold his focus and responds to what she tells.
She tells random stories since it seems her focus is getting distracted by her drinks. “Okay, why don’t you tell me from the start in chronological order?” he gets up and catches her when she looks like she’s starting to get a bit drunk. She falls on his arms and looks dazed.
“Hhmm, too much alcohol intake makes me crave for blood. I need to stop.” She shakes her head and pats his cheek. “Nice catch, Walker.” She says as she tries to stand straight. “And don’t worry. I promise you will get to hear every single minute of my life from the start.”
He smiles and jokes. “Better start soon because I don’t have forever. I might write chronicle of your life.”
“I could use one. I never write journals like Alexander does. He keeps everything of his life and journeys. He has a whole room for his stuff and memories.” She walks to the center room and Jamie follows her.
She lies on the big couch and Jamie takes the single couch, facing her. “You must have amazing memory to remember everything. What’s your aspiration to live, Freya?”
“Why do you always ask the hard question? Okay, well. It’s the same reason why I died and turned myself.” She takes some pause then lets out a heavy sigh before she starts elaborating everything to him. However, during the long story, Jamie falls asleep on her.
She gets up to check on him. He looks so deep in sleep, lying on his back on the couch. Freya doesn’t have the heart to disturb him. Looking at his peaceful sleeping face puts a smile on her face. She’s looking at him gently then finds her hand caressing his jaw. She retreats her hand quickly and grunts at herself wondering why she can’t just resist herself from being this soft.
“Thank you for tonight. Goodnight, Jamie.” She pecks his cheek then takes her jacket and leaves.
