Chasing Thirty Two
(Freya Milano)
I get woken up by my phone ringing nonstop on the nightstand since this early morning. I drag myself to the side of the bed and take my phone. Jamie name pops up on the screen. So it is him who has tried to reach me on the phone. I take the phone when it rings again.
“What’s the urgency Walker?” I throw myself back on the bed. “Are you dying?”
“I found myself waking up on the couch. I feel bad for sleeping on you last night. I’m sorry. I promise I will make it up other times. I’ll always be here for you.”
I chuckle. He’s being extra dramatic again so I tease him. “Yeah you should make it up. Next time sleep with me instead of sleeping on me.” I wish I could see his priceless reaction right now. His nervous laughter is amusing enough to hear.
“Are you still up for that road trip?” he reminds me.
I sit up and say. “Can you pick me up in an hour?” I love his truck better than my car now. “If you come sooner than that, you may catch me naked again. I don’t mind it though.”
He quickly replies. “I’ll pick you up an hour from now. See you.”
“Don’t be late Walker. I hate waiting.” I say before I hang up.

It’s almost 10 in the morning. Jamie picks me up right on time. I like that he wears black leather jacket again now. I think that’s his go to jacket whenever he goes out of town. It puts a smile on my face realizing that I wear my leather jacket too.
“Oow look at us! We’re quite the badass partners.” I smirk. He hands me a cup of coffee.
“I got this for you. This is correto just the way you like it.” He has another cup for himself too. “I want to say I’m sorry again for last night. I didn’t mean to sleep on you. You can repeat the whole thing all over again on the way.”
I tap his chest. “I know you meant to sleep with me not to sleep on me.” I tap his chest. “Don’t sweat it, Walker. You’d annoy me more if you keep saying sorry for the things you didn’t mean to do. Now let’s go. We’ve got a long day ahead of us.” I push him a little so that I can close the door.
“Where’s Alexander?”
“He’s out running errands to prepare and secure the town for next week founder’s day celebration.” I drink my correto as we walks to his truck. “How can one of the founder family members forget about that?”
“Oh damn. I need to tell him that I can’t accompany him today.” I hold his hand when he’s about to take out his phone.
“I told him already that you’d come with me to Powell today. He’s got Hayden and the others to help him.”
He nods and pulls his hand off my grab. “Okay then. Get in the car.” He gets in first.
“Can I drive?” I stop halfway getting in the passenger seat.
“No, no, you’d drive me crazy again.” He refuses.
I hop on the seat and argue. “I seem to drive you crazy one way or another.”
“I choose not to comment to that.” He laughs plainly and ignites the truck.
I can’t help but laughing. “It’s going to be a long drive. I hope you’re not that boring.”
“You can spend the nights with me on the lake and the grill, if I’m that boring, you do love being bored.” He glances at me then goes to the wheel. He’s pretty focused on the road and so smooth.
He gets me a bit speechless. “Ah well, I do most of the job, being exciting, the firestarter-“ I’m still thinking of more to say but my words cut off abruptly by a sudden brake that catches me off guard. I’m thrown to the front all of sudden but my vampire reflexes help me to save myself from hitting the dashboard. It reminds me I haven’t had my seatbelt on.
“What the hell was that!” My breath is heaving before I can manage it. I find myself pulled back on the seat and my right hand on Jamie’s thigh. My head snaps at him. He looks like he’s trying not to smile but it’s shown on his face, a teasing smile.
He coughs a little then answers. “A deer passing.”
“Seriously? Where is it?” my eyes squint, not believing what he said.
He sighs, pretending to look for something in front of the truck. “It ran. We almost hit it.”
“Uh huh, did we?” I tap his thigh. “Who would have thought you could pull something like that?”
He surprises me more today when he winks playfully at me. “Now look who’s in awe!” he really is in the mood.
“I see.” I nod. “You want to play with me. I like this daring version of you.” He just laughs and starts driving again. His laugh is contagious and it’s a rarity to see him laugh. So I laugh with him for a good moment.
-----
We made a few quick stop for food along the way. When the clock strikes 10 pm, we have arrived in Powell. Jamie doesn’t know where to go from here so I lead him the way to uncle Silvestro’s house. He might be tired but the coffees keep him fresh.
“So this family line, they were part of the ruling legacies in Europe?” Jamie asks after I’ve shared a lot about the Milano and Lorenzo and the history that I know of. “And you are actually coming from two of the five? Five right? Wow.” He sounds like he can’t believe what he just learned.
I chuckle. “I think five. Why? You feel lucky to be involved with the aristocrats’ line now? I’m not exactly feeling lucky to bear the names. They come with a great responsibility.”
“But you’re not good with responsibility.” I don’t know if he’s joking but he has a slight smile on his face.
I slap his arm. “I have feelings.”
He laughs a little and looks at me for a while. “What happened to the others? Do they survive? Where are they now?”
I let out a deep breath. “If I had known, I wouldn’t have spent hundred years to search for it. My guess is that they’ve hid their identities throughout the centuries for whatever reasons.”
“You’ve got me now. If that’s so important for you, I’ll help in any way I can.” He gives me a reassuring smile. “I’m pretty much at blank too with my family history. Not that it won’t be as significant as yours and those lines. I just do what needs to be done.”
“The Walker is the pioneer founder family. That’s not nothing.” I say as we eventually come at the destination.
