Chapter 1
AMBER'S POINT OF VIEW
"Mommy, can I please go out hunting with Zaylee and Lorcan? PLEASE!" Amber shouted, practically jumping up and down in excitement. She looks over to her brother and sister smiling at them, but they didn't return the gesture. Her mother looked at her daughter and frowned at her excitement.
"Not today, sweetie..."
"But why? I'm ready, I can already transform into my wolf form." She told her mother firmly trying not to brust into tears, she really thought mommy would let her go this time.
"You're just not ready..."
"I'm six years old, I can handle myself. Besides, Zaylee and Lorcan will watch over me." She said angrily at her mother, mad she's not letting her go. Silent tears start streaming down, she knows mommy won't let her go today.
"You asked me a question and my answer is 'no.' That's the end of it Amber." Her mother replied firmly, leaving no room for argument.
Amber felt an unusual tingling sensation as she started transforming into her wolf form. The anger overwhelming. She immediately starts running towards her mother, the anger already out of control.
Amber immediately woke up from her sleep, sweat pouring down her face. She quickly wipes away her tears and sweat, heading over to the park's restroom with her bag of clothes. Her clothes are old and faded, but at least she has clothes. At the end of each week, with the little money she has left, she goes to the public laundry room.
Amber looks in the mirror at her amber eyes. Her dark yellow eyes with hints of orange that clearly classifies her as a werewolf. She digs in her bag and grabs her hairbrush. She starts brushing her tangled hair until no tangles were left. Her straight brown hair fell below her shoulders, half way across her back.
She grabs her elastic hair band and ties it back up into a pony tail. She grabs her pair of brown contacts. She looks at her eyes, sad that she'll have to cover them with contacts, but she knows she has too. No matter how much she hates putting them in.
Another day of school, but at least summer break is in two weeks!
Her mood changing, she quickly puts in her contacts, excited that school ends in a couple weeks. Her senior year was looking bland as she goes to this poor educated school, but at least she could go to school.
Would things have been different if I stayed at home?
Don't you dare even think that Amber, you know you couldn't have stayed...
I know, but what if they were meant to help me, help me control my vampire side...
After what you did to mom, they wouldn't have accepted you anyway.
Amber quickly leaves the restroom, no longer able to look at herself in the mirror. "It was an accident!" She shouted frustrated, receiving a few weird stares in return. She walks over to her bench, which thankfully no one ever goes near, probably because they know she goes on it.
Amber grabs her school bag and shoves her clothes bag into it. "School, here I come." She said trying to forget about everything else and dread about school.
School where no one ever gets to know me, hates me, avoids me. School is the life of everyone's party, but mines.
Well, on their defense, you avoid them back.
She starts walking on the familiar worned down road. A road that has pot holes almost every step she takes and cracks along the edges. No cars ever come on this road anymore making it the perfect pathway to school. The more she stays hidden the better it is for everyone after all.
........
Amber walks through the front doors of school, greeted by glares and silence. She looks down at her hands avoiding everyone's gaze.
Man, it's like they know what I am. They know I'm a monster.
Ah, when you try so hard to hide it.
Don't mock my pain!
Life is pain, deal with it.
She walks over to her locker. She grabs her Marine Science textbook, feeling better about going to that class later on today.
Marine science is so fun, learning about the creatures in the ocean...
Creatures in the human world? Humans are weak, why do you want to learn about them?
Hey, they're not weak, they're strong and powerful in ways we would never understand, so what if their different, technically we're the ones who are different. And for your information, I like learning about them.
That makes one of us.
Amber hates arguing with herself, but she knows it can't be helped either, being half werewolf and half vampire, two creatures that hate and will forever hate each other, arguing was destined to happen.
"Hi, I'm Knight," Amber looks up to see a handsome, dark haired man. She has seen everyone in this school, but don't recall ever seeing him. She looks more closely to see his golden eyes shinning back at her. She immediately doesn't like him.
Ugh, he's a werewolf. Not a bright one. He should hide those eyes of his, it's like he wants everyone to know that there's creatures, other than humans, roaming the Earth.
You're just jealous he doesn't have to hide it.
Jealous?! I think it's stupid and irresponsible of him.
"Night? As in the night sky? Very impressive," Amber sarcastically replied, speed walking pass him. She does not want to get involved with him.
"No," he said catching up to her, "Knight, as in 'your Knight in Shining Armor.'" She looks over at him trying not to laugh.
Knight, that's very...strong, no it's not even a strong name, it's lame.
Maybe to you it is, but it's not that bad of a name, kind of...
Even you can't deny it.
Rarely will she ever agree with her vampire side, but this is one of those moments.
She gives a small smile to Knight, and walks away, hoping he gets the hint that she doesn't want to be anywhere near him.
She let's out the breath she've been holding onto, happy he's not back here. "You know, I have this feeling you don't want to be anywhere near me." He said right by her side, again.
Where would you get that idea from...
"Oh, of course not, its just... I don't want to be late for class." She said trying to convince him to believe that. She was about to walk away, but decided against it, he would just run to catch up with her.
Get a hint and leave me alone!
Fortunately, the bell ranged indicating all students to head over to their classes. "Well it was nice meeting you..."
He grabbed her hand and brought it to his lips. "Trust me, the pleasure's all mine." She gives a shaky smile and walks away faster than before.
Gross!
She wipes her hand on her pants and hurries off to class, which was on the other side of the building. She watches students run pass her trying to get to their classes, than she sees students walk as slow as turtles do, not caring if their late.
Ugh, slow people anger me!
Calm down, just walk around them.
Still they should be respectful of their peers.
She walks around a few slow people and dodge fast people running past her. If there was one thing Amber wished, it will be making "passing time" longer, it's only five minutes, and that's not enough time.
She walks into her classroom, going over to the back of the room where her seat is. Mr. Grandly already writing on the chalkboard for today's lesson.
Mr. Grandly is the best teacher I know, he makes me and everyone else actually like physics. Nothing's wrong with physics in this school, but if you don't have Mr. Grandly, than you practically hate physics.
The rest of the teachers are hard core when it comes to physics, assigning group projects every two weeks, and individual projects every five weeks. Some individual projects overlap with group projects, not to mention they have homework everyday. No one knows why the other teachers are hard core, but there have been students who dropped out of their classes.
I would drop out too if I was put into their class.
The bell rang, and we immediately passed up our homework.
"Now, I know this sounds odd at this time of the year, but we have a new student." Amber immediately looks up knowing who it is.
"Hi, my name is Knight." He said winking at Amber. He starts smiling towards her, but she couldn't even muster a small smile. Mr. Grandly mumbles a few words at Knight and he starts walking over towards Amber.
He sits to her right the only open sit in the room. Mr. Grandly has an interesting seat arrangement. The first five rows have six chairs, than the last row had two chairs. Amber was the only one in the last row, practically pleading with Mr. Grandly to have her be the only one, but now that has changed.
"You know I came here to learn so you better not distract me." Amber said mad at Knight for being here.
Almost a whole year I was alone, but now he has to come here and mess that up.
And for two weeks?! What kind of person would come to a new school only for two weeks?
"Ah, I see, so I distract you now?" He asked lifting his eyebrows, clearly amused. Amber got more annoyed and turns away from him. She hears his laughter, but refuses to face him. "No worries, I came here to learn too."
"Look smart aleck, as long as you don't talk to me, I'm good." She said turning back to look at him. His amused look was just enough for her to kick him out herself, but she decided against it.
"Ah, that's too bad, especially since I like talking to you," he whispered into her ear. She goes over to slap him, but he caught it before it made contact. "Feisty, aren't you? You know I sense the wolf in you, yet there's something weird about you, I just can't put my finger on it." He whispered making sure she was the one who can hear it.
She gives him a smile, surprised he came out with it. "'Wolf'? So you're saying werewolves are real?" She asked, smiling at the trap she laid out.
"No, you are." He winked at her, making her ten times more mad than before, if she didn't have so much self control she doesn't know what would happen to him, instead she just takes her hand back and looks the other way.
You can't transform in front of everybody...
I know, but I can slap him.
Actually you can't you're not fast enough. You're just mad because he outsmarted you.
You know, the last time I checked, there was only one of me.
Just saying.
Amber's arguments with herself are getting worse as the days go by, but she knows why. She can't deny the feeling, her vampire side is getting stronger, overpowering her werewolf side sometimes.
"Class, quiet down!" Mr. Grandly said firmly, getting his point across. They immediately went silent. "Thank you, now go to page 328 in your books. That's the beginning of our new unit: atomic, nuclear, and particle physics. Read up to 340, you can do group reading or individual. If reading in a group, do so quietly."
Amber flips the pages and starts reading. "So, do you want to read together?" He asked Amber.
What's his problem? Why couldn't he find some else to bug?
Maybe he's just as lonely as you.
Amber shakes away that last thought and politely says "no". She turns away from him and starts reading. She loves reading, but she's a slow reader, she'll need to start right away.
"Oh, I just thought you would want to read together, I guess the joke's on me. Of course you wouldn't want to read with me, too afraid you'll fall in love with my reading voice." He said watching her reaction. She took it calmly and kept reading, but she was enraged inside.
Love his voice?! I don't love it now, so I don't know why I'll fall in love with his 'reading voice' it's the same voice. A voice that's annoying and irritating!
He leaves her alone, and starts reading himself. Amber is relieved, but sad it's only been five minutes of class.
Today's going to be a long day.
........
"Finally, walking out the doors. Finally free to go to the park," Amber said happily. She was greeted by the hot sun warming her. She always loved the feeling of the sun, but sometimes, if she was tired enough, she would find herself sleep walking.
"Watch out!" Someone shouted, suddenly waking her up. Someone was pulling her away from a telephone pole she would have made contact with. She looks up to see those familiar golden eyes. Knight just so happened to be in all her classes except her last class, and though it was against her will, she spent a lot of time with him.
"Thank you, Knight." She said genuinely, happy she didn't smack into a pole, that would hurt and be embarrassing.
"What did I say? That's right, 'I'm your Knight in Shining Armor.'" He replied, all that happiness and respect she felt for him disappeared in a blink of an eye.
"Look, I better get going...my, um, mom's waiting for me." Amber said, running away from him. Why she's making excuses for him, she doesn't know.
"See yah tomorrow!" He shouted after her, which she winced at.
Only need to see him for two weeks before you're free, you can last that long.
Right?
........
Amber looks over to her bench to see a dark figure sitting on it. She slowly walks up to the figure, clenching her hands into fists. She raised her hand getting ready to strike, but in a flash the figure turned around and caught it before it made contact.
"You know what, now I really have this feeling that you don't like me." Knight said smiling up at Amber. She's more furious than before when he was just annoying her, now he's walking right into her life outside of school.
"What are you doing here?!" She snapped, trying to remain calm, but a part of her wants to rip him to shreds and it's not her werewolf side.
"I could ask you the same, isn't your mom waiting for you?" He asked looking back at her smiling, that same amused smile he had on all day. Stalling for an answer, Amber walks around and sits right next to him looking at a group of kids play soccer.
"My mom always let's me come here when I finish...my chores." She said hesitantly, which he raises his eyebrows in disbelief. "If you don't believe me..."
"Your right I don't believe you..."
"I don't get it, how are you coming into this school when it's fourth quarter, not to mention summer break is in two weeks? That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard." She asked him as he keeps playing with his hands trying to find an answer that would satisfy her. She knew it was off topic, but she couldn't hold it in anymore either.
Why would you even want to come here at all?! You make no sense.
"I just transferred all my credits into this school. My other school, I was driving thirty miles everyday to get to it, at least the distance here is shorter." He said reasonably, but Amber didn't see any reason in that. And that didn't answer her question fully.
"You make no sense." Amber said, getting up from her seat and walking away from him. She keeps her eyes open for a new bench, but they were all taken.
"And I suppose you do?" He shot back smiling down at her. She glares daggers at him, but it didn't seem to affect him. Amber walks back over to her bench and sits on it starting to feel tired from school and dealing with him all day.
"You couldn't have sucked it up for two more weeks?" She asked him. He slowly starts getting annoyed at her question, but quickly brushes it off. She notices it. "I'm just saying..."
"Well let's see, do you have a car?" He asked fully aware of the answer. She looks at him clearly annoyed now. "I rest my case..."
"I'm sorry, not everyone has the luxury of a car." She said smiling sweetly up to him.
"Yes, but everyone that has a car understands it needs gas to run it and that costs money." He said, fully aware of Amber officially at the limit with him. She looks away longing to be a little kid again with no problems, no cares. He spends a moment looking at her, trying to figure her out, but comes up empty.
Amber looks over at him, and he immediately moves his gaze somewhere else. "Is there a reason why you're here, Knight?" She asked again sincerely, but their may have been a hint of annoyance. It's not that she's mad that he's here, though she is, but she's also confused as to why he suddenly popped into her life, she doesn't know how to deal with it.
I've been alone for so long, I don't know how to interact with people.
That I agree with.
Uh, thank you?
You're welcome.
"I need a place to clear my head and this bench is always open..."
"Because it's mine." She said, he raises his brow not believing her for a second.
"That's because it's my bench," she said waiting for him to react, but he doesn't react. She's about to tell the story she told a million times. "Knight, I haven't been completely honest with you... yet again you couldn't exactly blame me. This is my bench as it is my home ever since I was twelve. I don't have a mom to go to or anybody. They're all dead. The reason why this bench was empty when you got here was because everyone avoids me, which means they avoid this bench." She turns away when he looks towards her, suddenly feeling sad at the life she created herself.
Some part of her feels guilty for the lie she spoke of, but that's a very very little part of her. Maybe it would have been bigger if he didn't bother her all day. She actually grown so used to saying this side of the story, she doesn't need to try to hide the little lie she created in it.
"Sounds hard," he said not really knowing how to react to it. Amber nods her head, but doesn't feel like talking anymore. She should be use to it, she's been living like this for the past twelve years, but it's still hard. It's hard to barely afford the necessities you need. Most of the time, having to live without it. "I'm sorry you have to go through that." He took her hand, squeezing it. It feels weird and she wants to pull her hand, but she knows he sincerely means it. She pulls back her hand, but smiles up at him.
"Aw, that's sweet, I hate sweet." A voice came from behind them, and Amber knew exactly who it was.
