Chapter 13
KNIGHT'S POINT OF VIEW
He drifts into the kitchen, swaying left to right. It's been over ninety six hours since he last slept and he plans on going for more. At least a week. He's done two weeks before.
As long as he doesn't sleep, he doesn't have nightmares.
"Just a little diet coke should do it...You're kidding me? Where is it?!" The first thing he doesn't see, is the thing he needs. He scrambles around, literally rearranging everything inside the refrigerator five times.
It's no where to be found.
"Okay, watching TV would make me more tired, and I would go running, but I don't exactly trust Amber alone. Man, what do I do?" He asked himself, pacing the floor. Swaying here and there.
"The only thing I can do..." He starts doing jumping jacks. After fifty jumping jacks, he goes down doing thirty push ups and seventy sit ups with ease, but somehow this made him even more tired.
He starts running around the living room, trying to stay as quiet as possible.
After what seems like five minutes, he stops running and looks up at the clock that read 6:47a.m. He walks over to the bathroom and starts brushing his teeth. His eyes growing even more heavy.
He stops brushing his teeth for a moment and throws water on his face.
He looks up into the mirror, frowning at his golden eyes. Proof that he's different, evidence that he's not and will never be human again.
Well, I prefer to be a werewolf any day over being a vampire.
Spitting out the now liquid form of tooth paste, he rinse his mouth, gives himself one last slap to the face, and walks down the hall.
He knocks on her door, but no response came.
"Amber?" He asked, knocking a little louder. Nothing.
"Come on sleepy head, today's the first day of training." He said excitedly, but no sound was made on the other side of the door.
He continues knocking on her door nonstop for three minutes, literally counting the seconds in his head. There's still no response on the other side.
Frustrated, he pounds the door.
"I'll break this door open if you don't answer...I don't even care if...fine I care if it's broken. Open up!" He shouts, getting a little anxious.
Did she somehow escape?
Is my dream of learning how to control this...this thing inside me, gone like that?
Are the vampires going to keep chasing me even if Amber's gone? Will they torture me to tell them where she went even if I don't know where she went or where she would go?
Is this, so call 'Headmaster' going to find her? Kill her? He's already sending his servants to kidnap her.
What does he even want with her?
What about me? Does he even know I exist? Is he going to kill me all because I know Amber? Would I be seen as a threat...
I'm already a threat being a werewolf, not to mention a semi-werewolf, a thousand times worse.
Oh, I'm so dead.
"I'm coming in!" He shouts turning the knob. Taking a deep breath, he opens the door. The first thing he notices is the windows open, his heart sinking.
She's gone.
He then looks over to bed to see Amber's wrapped around the thick comforter. She must be really cold because she's practically covered head to toe, and it's summer. The window open is only blowing hot air inside, making the room hotter than normal.
His curiosity is suddenly pushed aside noticing something else different about her: her facial expression. This is the first time he didn't see a scowl on her face and he doesn't know how to feel about this.
"Amber?" He asked across the room. She stirs in her sleep, turning away from him, her back facing him. Frustrated, overwhelm, and relieved all in one, he walks up to her, and makes the bold move to shout in her ear. She's up now.
Uh oh, go back to sleep!
"How are you...why are you here!?" She growled, her eyes growing darker. Now, this is the side of Amber he's used too.
"Rise and shine! We got a big day ahead of us." He singed, trying to ignore her glare she's sending him. If a single glare could kill, he would be dead right now.
"What time is it?" She demanded still shouting.
Mental note: not a morning person.
"Practically seven..."
"Are you kidding me?! You burst in here practically screaming at the top of your lungs all morning..."
"Only for the past couple minutes..." He interrupted, but made the smart move to stop and let her finish.
"Screaming at the top of your lungs all morning and for what? You're lonely?" She asked disgusted. Not even bringing herself to look at him.
"No!" He replied offensively.
"Then what?" She demanded, looking back up at him. Just looking at her, he couldn't help but think she's the most intimidating, hotheaded person he's ever met.
She would be the last person he would go to if he were ever in need of something, especially if he were feeling lonely.
Speechless, he weakly replies, "it's training day."
She snorts covering the blanket over her face, no longer wanting to look at him. "Fine, wake me up in...what you call it..."
"Five minutes?" Knight suggested thinking she must be awake now with all this bickering their doing.
"Yes, five hours." Amber said sinking deeper into her bed.
"FIVE HOURS!?" Knight questioned, can't believing she still wants to sleep for that long. He doesn't even know what he's going to do during that time.
"Yes," she said more groggy.
Running his hands through his hair he let's out a sigh, knowing there's no changing her mind. Besides, she's probably be in a much better mood if she's well rested.
"Whatever, but only five hours..."
"Great, you can go now." Amber said gesturing towards the door.
Not knowing what to think of being kicked out, he walks out without another word, slamming the door behind him.
"Who does she think she is? That isn't even her room...I mean it is, but still she can't stop shouting and bickering for one second. It's like everything I do she turns into an argument." He said, walking away from her room. He was tired before, he's wide awake now.
He walks over to the living room and sits on the couch. It just turned seven o'clock, so much happened with those thirteen minutes.
He could handle waiting until noon, but her attitude not so much. Maybe the first day shouldn't be training, no matter how anxious he is about learning how to control his werewolf side.
"Training will have to wait, I need to get to know Amber better. Maybe that would make it easier to work with her." He mused.
"How exactly do I do that?" He asked, tapping his foot against the wooden floor. The rhythmic beat somehow helps him to concentrate more.
"Maybe, do two lies and a truth game." He suggested, thinking hard on it. He's not quite sure, but that's definitely one way to go.
"We could play board games, but maybe twist it in a way I'm getting to know her." He suggested.
"Maybe we can play Connect Four, but before we place a checker, we need to answer a question the other person asks...but that will drag the game making it too easy to spot the attempting connect fours." He shakes his head.
"We can play a fast game, like Connect
Four or Yahtzee, and whoever wins asks the other person three questions."
"We can play '21 Questions for guess your favorite animal' or anything really. It could be favorite food." He asked slightly curious.
"How about one person questions the other and they will have to answer...then the person who asked it will have to answer back." He said, seeming satisfied with his answer.
He looks at the time and he couldn't help, but be a bit flabbergasted and disappointed all in one. Only five minutes have passed.
This is going to be a long morning.
............
Five hours comes by and she's still not responding to his knocks or shouts
Is she trying to annoy me? She said five hours, she should be up by now.
Frustrated, Knight goes to open the door but it's locked. He pounds on the door, the whole door shaking.
"Open this door or..."
"Or what?" He jumps at the sound of her voice coming from behind him. "Jumpy, are we?" She asked crossing her arms, lifting her brow at him.
"How did you..." He couldn't even finish that sentence.
"Get out of my bedroom?" She finished, which he nods his head too.
"The grand magician, shan't reveal her secrets..."
"You went through the window didn't you?" He asked trying to reassure himself. That's the only logical explanation he can come up with.
"Your point?" She asked, turning the door knob and walking through her bedroom door, the door that was locked just seconds ago.
Astonished, he walks through the door. The first he sees is the open window and Amber walking over to close it.
"Remind me to bolt your window, their not meant for..."
"For what? Escaping?" She turned around to face him. She immediately starts laughing at his facial expression that gave him away. "No worries, I gave you my word, I stay here for the three weeks. I help you, and you help me." Amber said walking back over to him.
She stops in front of him, crossing her arms, staring him down. He doesn't know what she's thinking, but suddenly curious as to what it is.
She staring at me so intensely...that's not a good thing, especially coming from her.
"Are you going to let me through?" She asked looking past him to the door. Speechless, he steps aside. That's not what he expected her to say.
"Come on, training's not going to start itself." She sarcastically responded, throwing the door open and stepping through it.
Now that's, that's what I expected her to say.
"I was actually thinking, let's just skip out on training today and get to know each other better." Knight replied.
She starts laughing. "You're kidding? Of course you are. Am I going first or you? Or better yet, do you want to do it by days? So I train a whole day and you train the next day? I think that will be better..."
"Stop your rambling Amber, we can't train today." Knight said matter of fact.
"Why? Isn't this what you wanted?" She asked disappointed. Her eyes are light orange right now. He's only ever seen it as orange, never gold like his eyes.
"Yes, but..."
"But why?" She demanded voice rising in confusion and disappointment.
"Because I can't work with someone I can't trust! Okay?" He said raising his voice. Most people would have been hurt if someone said that to them, but Amber isn't anything, but that. She's just mad, as always. "I just think we should get to know each other first."
"Fine, but what exactly did you have in mind?" She asked, rising as she went. Knight could tell she's still a bit confused and upset, but his mind was set five hours ago. He could be just as stubborn as she is if he wants to be.
"Games." He said enthusiastically.
"Games?" She questioned quizzical.
"Games." He repeated in the same tone when he first introduced the idea. "But, we could start off with the questionnaire."
She gives him a blank look, so he takes that as a sign to continue. "So we're going to ask each other questions..."
"Yeah, I got that part." Amber rolled her eyes. You could clearly see she was annoyed right now.
Man, she's not a people person.
"Let me finish." He paused making sure he has her full attention. She stares at him, motioning to continue. "Okay, so one person asks a question. The other person has to answer truthfully. Then if the person who asked it wants to give an answer they can, but they don't have too."
After a long pause, Amber nods her head. Knight feels happy. She finally agreed to something he said."I'll do it, but only on my terms." Amber said, which Knight folded his arms too, that feeling of being happy long gone.
What's wrong with my way?
"Let's hear it." Knight said, leaning on the wall to hear her proposition.
I'm probably going to regret this.
