Chapter 14
AMBER'S POINT OF VIEW
I can't believe after all that I went through this morning, having to deal with this clown, he changed his mind last minute.
Typical, but whatever. I'll just make it work.
Though games sound like the stupidest thing to do when trying to get to know someone, but maybe it'll work out.
"Are you going to tell me your proposal?" Knight huffed impatiently.
"Wait, I'm trying to think of some..."
"Oh so you're telling me you didn't really have an idea, you just didn't like it my way." Knight scoffed.
"Yes." She answered without any hesitation.
"Well, that hardly sounds fair..."
"You're the one who decided to change everything last minute." She scolded, her eyes narrowing on him. He narrowed his eyes back at her.
"Hey my motives are actually in the right place, but yours? You're just this inconsiderate girl, who wants everything done her way."
"Oh, I'm so hurt." She mocked placing a hand on her heart. They stood there in silence, both too angry to talk to each other.
"Do you want to hear my proposition or not?" She finally broke the ice, but snapped impatiently, waiting for an answer. Not the best way to open up the conversation.
She decides to go when Knight doesn't respond. "Okay, so the person who asks the question has to answer first, then the other person answers. So they both answer." Amber said, quite satisfied that she came up with that idea on spot, which she views is the best idea between the two.
"Some part of me wants to say 'no' just so you don't get it your way." He paused, mimicking Amber's crossed arm stance. "But I'll do it if it stops the arguments. Be the bigger per..."
"Great, where do you want to...play the games?" She stumbled still finding it hard to believe their playing games, when they could be training at this very moment.
But he does make a point. We should get to know each other better so when training comes, it's a lot easier.
The better you know someone, the easier it is to torture them.
Uh, yeah that's one way of thinking about it. But mostly helping someone right?
Sure, why not.
"Let's go outside for the questionnaire games, then come back inside for the board games..."
"Board games?" She incredulously inquired. There's a difference between games to get to know each other, icebreakers if you will, and board games.
"Yeah, only the fast games." He justified, as if that makes Amber feel better.
"You do know training isn't suppose to be fun, right?" She asked.
"Who said anything about 'fun'?" He asked, before continuing. "Besides, training could be fun, not always is, but could be..."
"I don't know what training you had, but from personal experience it was never fun." She responded getting off the wall, standing taller. She's about the same height as Knight when he's leaning against the wall, but shorter by a couple inches when their both standing tall.
She hates looking up at people.
"What type of training did you go through? It was never once fun?" He asked, more curious than judgemental.
"No." She flatly said. "Training is complicated. Most of the time it was me training myself to become stronger, to not be seen as weak." She said looking at the floor now, debating if she should tell him this next part, but before she could even debate it, she blurts it out. "But there was a time where my parents trained me. Most of the time it wasn't fun, but you do have those special moments when it was, but that was rare like only happened once rare."
An awkward silence hung in the air, but it was interrupted by Knight's voice. "Your parents trained you?" He asked, emotion behind the word parents.
"Yes, but it ended terribly and that's all I have to say about it." She rushed, trying not to think about the past that haunts her. She didn't even know why she brought it up.
"Okay, let's change the subject a bit. How exactly did you train yourself?" Knight respectfully asked. She looked up surprised, but a small smile grew on her lips. No words could express how grateful she was that he didn't press further or didn't get irritated when she stopped discussing it.
"Well, I worked on controlling my werewolf side, which was hard. It took a lot of will power that I didn't have at the time." Knight nod in understatement. "I was probably just as bad as a semi-werewolf when I started training myself." She added jokingly, which resulted in Knight forcing a laugh, but Amber brushed it aside. Thought nothing of it.
"How old were you?" Knight asked.
Snap, what age did I say I left? Eleven... Twelve right?
"Twelve." She said unsure and hesitantly. Knight raised his brow, surely catching on to the hesitation in her voice. He knows something's up. "It was a long time ago." She quickly added.
"So you started around the same time you left home?" He asked, which Amber nod, secretly relieved she got the age right.
"Wow, that's impressive, such a young age to discipline yourself." Knight remarked, catching Amber off guard.
Was he complimenting me? Or just joking around?
"Thank you," she said unsure, making the situation even more awkward. They both stood there, looking down at the floor, lost in thought. Amber thinking about how awkward she made the situation. She knows now to just say "thank you" more confidently, to avoid this from happening again, but she couldn't help being caught by surprise.
"Are you ready to go?" Knight asked, gesturing to the front door. She nods her head, leading them out the door in silence. She looks over to the living room, so clean, you could see your reflection as you walk past it.
Man, he cleaned up the place, it's a lot nicer. I wonder how long he was living here? Does he have family to go to? Did he leave his family to live on his own? Or did they all die, chased down by vampires, and he was left alone?
Don't jump to conclusions...
Hey, that happens all the time, it's sad, but true. Werewolf families are always torn apart because vampires chase and kill. That's all they ever do.
I could say the same about werewolves. You guys kill vampires too, it goes both ways. Besides, we don't know if that happened to his family...from where I'm standing, you don't know anything about him, especially his family.
That's why we're doing these games, to get to know each other better.
We both know games, won't do the trick, but you guys could try.
Once she got outside, she turned around and let Knight lead her to the porch couch. It's a view of a car and pavement, not exactly the scenery Amber wants.
"Could we sit on that tree?" Amber asked pointing to the big tree in front of them. The tree is about twenty seven feet tall, with thick branches that would definitely hold their weight. The tree is thriving, and growing yellow flowers at the top where the bright green leaves are.
Amber's really hoping Knight agrees to it, that means that their backs would face the pavement road. She would love to look at the view of the back of the house. A view with mountains as tall as the sky itself, full of vibrant colors of green.
"Sure, could you climb it?" He asked, which made Amber laugh.
"Please I was born to climb trees." Knight holds his hand up in mock surrender and gestured for Amber to lead the way.
Amber got to the tree and looked it up and down several times. The tree is flat and barely has any place to put your foot on. It's practically impossible to climb this tree.
"After you," Knight said smugly, leaning against the tree. She looked up the tree one last time, rolled up her sleeves, and started climbing. She instantly slid down, not finding any place to place her foot.
Knight starts coughing, obviously trying to stiffle in his laugh. She glares at him, before trying again.
She tries again and again, keeps sliding down again and again. She looks over at Knight every time she slides down, and every time he has that amused grin on his face.
"Isn't really that easy, is it?" Knight spoke up, after the twentieth time of attempting to climb up. Clearly hearing the amusement in his voice she ignores him and keeps trying.
After a couple more attempts, his annoying voice comes back. "You know, if we just stayed at the couch we probably would have been done by now."
"I'm not taking that long..."
"Amber, it's been thirty minutes and you still haven't gone a single inch up that tree." He replied impatiently.
It's been that long already?
How would he know that?
That's right, his watch.
It may be broken.
"My watch isn't broken. I'm serious, it's been over thirty minutes." Knight said to her astonishment. It's as if she read her mind, which is freaking her out.
Does he have telepathic powers? Could he read my mind?
I never heard of a werewolf having that power, but yet again, I don't know every single power they could have.
Snap, he would've known my past by now. What if he does know, but is hiding it?
Isn't hiding suppose to be my job? If he knows something, I would want him to tell me.
Knight's laugh broke the silence. "I'm sorry..." He stopped mid-sentence laughing harder, making Amber more confused than ever. He hunched over, grabbing his stomach as if that's going to help him, but he's still laughing like a mad man.
"I'm sorry you're face was priceless. You're whole body gone rigid as if you seen a ghost, and then your face...oh my goodness you look so scared. Man the fear, totally shows up on your face, but I'm laughing because you think I can read minds." He laughs harder, but Amber isn't laughing yet. She still thinks he's reading her mind, he knew she thought he could read her mind.
"Okay, okay." Knight said trying to calm himself down. "In all honesty, I really can't read minds. I knew that you would think my watch is broken because you don't believe anything I say, so I called you out on it. Doesn't mean I can read minds."
"Well, that's comforting to know," she said a bit on edge.
"Anywho, do you want to go back to the couch or climb this easy tre..."
"Easy? There's nothing easy about it," Amber said slightly frustrated with his response.
"It's easy if you know where to place your foot." He said matter of fact.
Smart aleck.
"If it's so easy, why don't you do it?" She retorted, a small grin growing on her lips. She would love to see him fail.
"Watch and learned," he smirked, stretching his arms and legs. Amber wanted to add "this isn't a race" but decided against it. It doesn't matter if he stretches if he doesn't make it at all.
He started and instantly was climbing the tree, 'til he got to the second branch within seconds. He climbed up so fast, Amber didn't even have time to learn, she barely was able to watch.
"Not so big now are you, I mean you're tiny down there." Knight shouted, grinning down at her. "Man looking up must really hurt, but yet again, you're probably used to that."
Amber snapped. Her eyes grew darker as she paced the floor, trying to figure out how to climb the tree. She walked around the tree, away from Knight's view point and climbed from the back. A lot easier than the front.
When she looked down from the third branch it was clear Knight was still looking for her. He hasn't noticed she went around. "Who's looking up at who now?" Amber replied with a smirk of her own, causing Knight to almost jump off his branch.
"Amber, don't scary me like that." He scolded making Amber laugh.
"What? Me? Scare the great 'Knight in shinning armor'? There's no way I could have possibly done that." Amber sarcastically spoke, laughing way too hard, her whole branch shook. She calms down, but still continues to smirk down at him.
"Haha, very funny. But seriously, you practically scared me to death..."
"If you fell, you wouldn't have died, just merely broke a bone." She said, receiving a glare from Knight.
"'Merely'? Just because we heal fast, doesn't take away the pain. And I could have died if I fell the wrong way and banged my head..."
"Such a drama queen." Amber interjected dramatically. Knight sighed, but didn't say anything else.
The same awkward silence from before came back. They had so much awkward silences within this last hour, they're probably used to it by now.
"Do you want to start the questions?" Amber spoke up, still looking at the mountains.
"Sure, but you go first." Knight replied. She looked over at him and thought about it. And thought about it, but she didn't know what to ask him.
"Do you want me to go first?" Knight asked after several minutes of Amber not coming up with anything to ask him.
"That would be great." She said sincerely, not a hint of sarcasm. His brow lifted up, but it quickly went back down.
"What's your favorite animal? Mines would be penguins." Knight answered.
"Penguins?" Amber asked in disbelief. Knight nod his head in agreement. "Why?"
"Because they huddle together as a family and stick together no matter what. What about you?" He asked, curious to hear what she has to say.
"Sea otters."
"Sea otters?" Knight asked, using the same tone she used earlier when she questioned him.
"Yep." Amber replied enthusiastically.
"I guess it's my turn to ask 'why'."
"Because when they go to sleep, they hold onto each other's hands so they don't drift apart from each other." They were both astonished by each other's answers. Took a short moment to think on it.
Maybe, this wouldn't turn out to be such a disaster.
"Interesting...in a way our animals both deal with families." Knight sincerely commented, silencing any sarcastic comments she could have possibly made.
"Yeah, I suppose you're right." Amber said at last, not wanting to stay on the topic of family for too long.
"If you could have any superpower, what would you have? For me, it would be telekinesis. I would love to be able to move objects with my mind." Amber answered enthusiastically, just the thought of it always made her excited.
"For me, it would be the ability teleport. I wouldn't be trapped on this island anymore. I would be able to go to Europe, the United States, South America, Africa, basically anywhere, but Faire."
"You don't like it here?" She asked feeling sorry for him. Once you're here, you're stuck here, you can't go anywhere else. Even vampires don't make trips off island too much, it's rough on them to fly because the atmosphere out of Faire is different than the atmosphere in Faire.
"I just want to travel the world." Knight admitted.
"Can't argue there. I would love to travel the world as well." Amber agreed leaving the air even more awkward between them. Only a handful of times does Amber actually choose to agree with him. "You want to choose the next question?"
"Yep," Knight answered quickly. "Okay, what do you do to get rid of stress?" He asked and immediately added, "I know, I know it's a weird question," as he saw the look on her face.
There was a sudden gleam in his eyes as he continues, "I want you to guess mines."
"Uh, how would I know?" She asked, but Knight motioned her to go on. "Running..."
"I wish, I only run when I have too...well, sometimes it could be, but not my main one."
"Um, stargazing?" She asked randomly, having no clue where he's going with this.
"No, but I do like to do that." He said, and she couldn't help but to think how confusing this all is.
Why does he want me to guess?
"Hiking?" She asked, receiving a strange look from Knight.
"Why only outdoor activities? Think indoors, and that's my only hint." Knight incredulously answered, but there was a small smile on his face.
"I don't know...I thought you were suppose to answer not me." Amber spoke, throwing her hands up in frustration.
"Just think on it. If you don't get it in three more tries, I'll tell you..."
"Promise?" She asked shocking both herself and Knight.
Knight gave her a small smile, nodding his head. He looked up at her and she couldn't help, but think if his head hurts from doing so. Than she thought on it harder and realized she was only a feet or two higher, not too bad distance wise. Her concern for him quickly faded.
"Playing games?" She joked, receiving a laugh on his end.
"Maybe if I had someone to play with." He answered. She sighed, re-adjusting her position on the tree so her back fit more comfortably.
"Reading?" She asked, receiving a fierce head shake from Knight.
"No, no, no! Who likes to read?" He asked disgusted by the idea.
She gave a short laugh before responding "I do." She stops laughing and thinks on it more. Obviously he thinks she knows, so maybe she's thinking too hard on it? Yet again, she doesn't really know what to say anymore, he rejected all her ideas.
"Journaling?" She asked, officially all out of ideas.
"'Journaling?' Man you're bad at guessing." He finished laughing. Amber broke a small branch and threw it down at him, barely hitting his chest. This makes him laugh even harder.
Soon enough, Amber finds herself smiling, rolling her eyes at him. "Just tell me, before I even forget what we're talking about."
"Are you sure you want to know?" He teased, having her throw a bigger branch at him, but only this time it didn't reach him. "Was that meant for me?" He asked, laughing even harder.
"Oh my goodness, now you're driving me crazy..."
"Oh, so I drive you crazy now?" He joked winking at her. Enraged she threw the biggest branch, she could find, at him. The branch he just had to catch. Amber tried finding another branch to throw, but couldn't reach any more.
"Ugh, you're so annoying." She shouted obviously frustrated.
"I could say the same about you." He said, still smiling. "Okay, so in case you forgot, the question is 'what do you do to get rid of stress?' Now, my answer is...cleaning."
Jaw dropped, she forcibly shakes her head. She refuses to accept that answer. "No, that's impossible. If you were a clean freak, you wouldn't had let your living room get so messy..."
"Hey, even a 'clean freak' needs time to get messy." He answered confusing her even more. "Or at least for me. I don't like to clean, but every time I do, it always calms me."
"You're such a mystery to me, Knight." Amber concluded, shaking her head.
"Man, don't I know it." He responded instantly. She looked back down at him, kind of curious as to what he meant by that, but his eyes and facial expression didn't give anything away. "Huh, I have to agree with you and say 'I could say the same for you'."
She gave a small smile. "Okay let's continue, about stress reliever right? Okay, for me it would...'are you sure you want to know?'" She teased, receiving a small branch to her right shoulder. "Okay you asked for it. For me, it would have to be read..."
"No," he shouted dramatically, both of them breaking into laughter.
"Yes!" She shot back, using the same dramatic tone.
"Okay, you're officially weird..."
"What gave that away? The fact I'm a werewolf or the fact I read?" She asked, rolling her eyes at him. She always considered herself weird because she was different.
"No, being a werewolf is weird, but it's the fact that you read that makes you a hundred times weirder." She raised her brow, but didn't question further.
They sat in a comfortable silence for once, both looking at the vibrant mountains in front of them.
"Amber?" Knight asked, both still looking over at the mountains.
"Hmph?" She answered.
"Could we continue this tomorrow? I know it's only 3:00p.m., but I'm quite exhausted." Knight answered, snapping Amber back to reality. She looked over at him to be greeted with his eyes staring back at her, waiting for an answer.
"Its already three?" She asked, knowing full well that that's not the answer he was looking for, but it's the question she needs to hear the answer to again.
"Yep, on the dot." He said as Amber registers this information. They've been up here asking questions for two and a half hours. They must have had really long silences, Amber concluded.
Like, really long silences.
"Yeah, I agree. We'll wake up early and resume where we left off. Then later on, I start the training off." She answered receiving a small glare from his way.
"You won't explode on me like you did today right?" He snorted, making Amber smile.
"I won't, not on the first day of training at least." She said. He raised his right brow at her obviously not liking the sound of "at least", but nodded a couple moments later.
"I'll take what I can get." He said, getting down the tree, Amber following in pursuit.
I just hope early is not too early.
