Chapter 26
KNIGHT'S POINT OF VIEW
He spots a deer close by, getting in position to attack, his thirst for destruction and kill stronger than ever.
Just as he was about to make his move, he felt warmth on his feet. He looked down confused, seeing the first light hit him. He looked up to see the moon fading away as the sun starts to claim its place.
He looked at the rising sun for a few more seconds then back across the path towards the deer. Just as he was about to strike, his hair on his arm and legs goes short along with his fingernails and toe nails.
He collapsed on the ground, the sound made such a loud impact, the deer looked over to him. Startled, it started running the opposite direction, disappearing within seconds.
"Man, that was a close one." He sighed, taking in deep breaths. He smiles, grateful for not ending that deer's life.
That smile quickly vanishes as he looks around seeing nothing familiar, all green and trees. "Great, this is where I wish I had Amber with me to help me out of this mess. No doubt she would have known her way through this vast of green trees." He sighs frustrated.
During his still on going journey to try to get back home, it's not the first time he started dozing off neither is it the first time he walked right into a tree branch, but it is the first time it hurt as badly as it did this time. Brand new scratches on his face, it takes everything in him not to get mad and break the branch off the tree.
"Who knew, in such a short amount of time, I would be so used to having someone to turn to." He sighed, walking to who knows where.
He relies on his instincts, hoping it's enough to save him from living in this forest forever.
....
Several, several hours pass, the sun beginning to set, but he finally sees the streets. He recognizes the twisty road and knows immediately where he's at.
Suddenly having a new burst of energy he runs home not even stopping until his hand touches the doorknob. He's breathing heavily, but never felt so alive and so happy as he is now.
"Hey, I'm home!" He shouts, noticing a couple items on the ground. A couple books and cups, not to mention puddles of water on the ground from the cups on the floor. "Come on, you couldn't have cleaned up while I was gone?" His smile slowly drooping.
This is the last time I leave her alone, if she's not going to take care of the place...man, the messes I clean up after this girl. This isn't the first time the house has been a wreck, and sadly isn't going to be the last...
His eyes flashed to an intense dark pale gold, signifying the anger that's boiling up inside him as he looks at the brand new crack in the wall. "What happened to my..." he freezes when he sees Amber lying on the floor, eyes closed, breathing shallow and unsteady.
What happened here?!
He immediately rushes to her side, checking her pulse though he could see her breathing. "Amber?" He asked gently shaking her, but she doesn't wake. "Amber! Please don't be dead..."
"I'm not dead, you idiot!" She snapped, squeezing her eyes tight. Knight releases the breath he didn't know he's been holding. "Ugh, even insulting you hurts."
That's how he knows she's alright even if it hurts, if she still has room left to insult him, she's going to be okay.
"You don't have to answer now, but I want an explanation as soon as you're able." He said softly yet firmly, leaving no room for argument. "Especially for my wall." He half-joked, trying to lighten the mood a bit.
He slid his arms under her back and legs, and her eyes immediately shot open. "What are you doing?" She asked, her voice on edge.
"Relax, I'm moving you to the cou..."
"No, I stay here!" She stubbornly answered. Knight quickly, but gently, frees his arms then crosses them in front of him.
"So what? You stay here?" He skeptically asked. The hard floor will do nothing towards her recovery. He feels it would only make the process longer.
"Yes." She acknowledged firmly, she has already made up her mind. She's determined he'll give her that, but too stubborn to accept help when she needs it most.
You're so frustrating!
"You would probably heal faster if you were somewhere softer like the couch. Or at least be more comfortable." He countered, having her groan in the end.
"Please, stop talking, you're making the pain in my head worse." She said after a long pause, inhaling deeply, slowly closing her eyes shut.
Sure, I'm making it worse. I didn't do...whatever it is that happened to you! I didn't do anything except be a bit concerned for you!
Ugh, you drive me crazy sometimes...all the time!
"I'll check up on you later." He replied grumpily, heading straight for his room. He's too tired to deal with her at the moment, especially when all she wants is to be left alone.
He accidentally slams his door shut. He opens it for a split second to shout "sorry," then shuts his door silently.
He flops down on his bed, facing the ceiling. "Why? Why does she never want my help? It makes no sense, what's the harm in taking someone's help?"
He tries to be mad, he tries to be annoyed and frustrated, he even tries to be furious towards her, but no matter how much he tries all he feels is worried and confusion.
The wounds were fresh, and yet looked like its been there a while. Usually she heals fast, but she's in pain. Her eyes were the darkest orange he has ever seen, looking very close to red, but what striked him the most was where the wounds were.
There was a thin scratch on her cheek, but a big hole in her chest, blood gushing out, looking like it was very close to her heart.
Was she attacked?
Did the vampires finally find her after a month of hiding?
Do they know where we are now?
Do we need to run away, go into the woods where we have miles and miles to hide?
Should we be hiding? Maybe our training has gone far enough and we can go out of the house now...
Well, if someone really did attack, then the training we have will have to be enough, we're no longer safe here.
Or is it some misunderstanding and she accidentally injured herself while training? I mean, I would think that would be pretty hard to do, to stab yourself, almost killing yourself, but yet again, she's not great with weapon combat either.
Yeah, but stab herself? That's a bit far fetched don't you think?
Well it's the only explanation I have for there not to be an attack...what if the vampires really did find us?
I better start packing, we must leave immediately...or as soon as she is able!
Wait, if there were vampires, why would they attack...almost kill her? Isn't that so call...The Headmaster! Doesn't he want her alive? Wasn't it that up to this point they were trying to kidnap her, so why didn't they?
Not that I'm complaining, it just doesn't make sense!
Overwhelmed, he soon feels his eyes closing and before he could stop himself, sleep quickly took over.
He looks around to find that he's in a dark forest. Nothing moving, everything still. He can't put his finger on where exactly he's at, but he doesn't have time to dwell on that as he sees a pair of glowing red eyes staring right back at him. It's too dark to see who it is, but it doesn't matter as he looks at the gold dagger glimmering in its hand.
He reaches to grab his usual dagger he carries around his belt, but doesn't feel anything. He's left defenseless.
"Who are you!?" He demands, as the vampire in front of him starts circling him.
"That does not matter." He sneered, suddenly behind him, holding the dagger to his throat. "You won't have her, she's mine!"
"Who? What?" He choked out, confused at the sudden change in subject.
"Don't be an idiot, you know exactly who I'm talking about." He pressed the dagger harder into his flesh.
Amber.
"Exactly, see I knew you weren't as dumb as you looked or..."
"I didn't say any..." Tears start to burn his eyes as the dagger starts to break skin and go deeper into his flesh, making it harder to breathe or see clearly.
"Don't you dare interrupt me." He threatened, but doesn't move the dagger any further into his skin. He does however, keep it there. "It's only a matter of time til you're dead anyway and she'll be my queen."
What?!
"I know it's all confusing right now, but get one thing straight, if you don't leave her now, you will die and she'll be the one to do it." He whispered into his ear, just as he finished what he came there to do.
"No!" He shouts his hands immediately going up to his throat. His face covered in sweat, but he doesn't care as he throws off the covers, and throws open his door, relieved to see Amber still on the floor.
What the heck was that!? Who was that?!
Is what he says true? Should I fear Amber?
Woah woah, yeah sure we have our differences, but killing? She wouldn't do that.
Besides it was just a nightmare, it's not real, but does beg the question as to why's Amber in the center of my nightmares? Ever since I met her, I hadn't had a nightmare without someone mentioning her.
"Are you alright?" She whispered staring up into the ceiling. I see her struggling to breathe, but she looks better than I last saw her. The scratch on her cheek is gone, leaving a very faint scar, and the wound on her chest is no longer bleeding out, but is closing up.
He slowly walks up to her and sits next to her. "I should be asking you that. Are you alright?" He asked, trying to push his nightmare out of his thoughts, but with no success.
One thing for sure, she's in danger if this vampire wants her.
Or is it that I'm in danger?
"Never been better." She joked, cracking a smile on his face. "I heard you screaming." She responded, that smile leaving his face as it fast as it came.
"Sorry to have startled you, I just...I had a nightmare and..."
She looks over to him just as she interrupted him. "You were sleeping?" She asked shocked, getting a chuckle out of him.
"Yes, I do sleep...every now and then," He joked before growing serious. "No matter how much I don't want to sleep." He said sadly.
"Why? Because of the nightmares?" She asked softly, but sincerely. It caught him a bit on the surprise side.
Maybe she does care.
"Yes, I've been having them for about six years now. They use to be every once and a while, but they're becoming more of a normal thing."
"How normal?" She asked, grimacing.
"You should rest, I'm sorry..."
"No, I...don't mind talking...with you." She groaned, her breathing become more unsteady. "Ugh, this is the worst." She pouted, taking deep breaths.
"Rest. I'm fine." He replied, getting ready to get up, but her hand over his stop him. He looked down at her hand on top his, feeling weird and uncomfortable at the moment.
"No, please. Talking with you calms me." She whispered, inhaling heavy breaths.
He gives her hand a gentle squeeze, catching her by surprise. She withdraws her hand, putting it back to her side. "How normal is it that you have these nightmares?" She asked a bit more firmly, slightly on the edge.
He sighed, feeling like things are going back to normal. Though he won't forget that split second her walls broke down. "Everytime I sleep."
Her face fell as she took in what he said. Her pity makes him a bit uneasy. He's touched to know she cares enough, but a small part of him thinks it's worse. It shows that it's a horrible thing and she knows that too.
It makes it seem even more horrible than it really is.
"That's...I don't know what to say." She responded sincerely, with a hint of remorse in her eyes.
"That's the first." He teased, cracking a small smile on both their faces.
"If I wasn't lying in a pool of my own blood, I would have smacked you." She snapped, but it didn't hold as much annoyance than it normally does, it even held a bit of amusement.
"Okay, enough about me. You want to talk, start with what happened here." He stated, leaving no room for an argument.
Leaving Amber silent.
"Come on Amber, I deserve to know." He pleaded for his case, but she remains silent. "Did vampires attack? Do they know where we are?" He asked waiting anxiously for her answer, but she remained emotionless and expressionless.
"Amber..."
"Nothing happened..."
"I beg to differ." He accused, pointing to the wall and back over to her. Even lying on the floor, she still manages to roll her eyes.
"Shut up. I was going to explain it to you, but now? I think I'm going to leave you in the dark." She acknowledged, turning her head to look up to the ceiling, ignoring him completely.
Even when he waves his hands in front of her face, she kept staring at the ceiling.
"Fine, I'm sorry, for whatever I did wrong." He grudgingly answered, having a few other things in mind to say, but decided to keep his mouth shut.
She doesn't waver. "But I would really, really appreciate it if you told me what happened." He added sincerely.
"Fine." She sighed, looking back over at him. She seemed hesitant for a while, but she took in a deep breath and started talking.
"I was training upstairs. I was mad I couldn't do the move I did last time with you, the one where you lost your sword. I kept trying, but nothing worked against that stupid pole I tried on, and you know me, my patience soon grew thin.
"I decided to switch it up, to use daggers instead of swords. I was doing fine, working hard, then, all of a sudden, I slipped on my own sweat and the dagger went into my chest, but luckily, I pulled it out in enough time to have it not kill me.
"I didn't want to stay in the stuffy, hot attic room, so I went down the stairs, but lost my balance on the last stair and slammed into the wall, where I scratched my cheek and made that crack on the wall. End of story." She looked at him giving him are you satisfied now look.
He. Was. Lost. For. Words.
Just...Lost.
Pole? Slipped on her sweat? What!?
After a few moments to regain his composure, he addressed her. "Am I suppose to believe that ridiculous story?" He skeptically asked, giving her an incredulous look.
"You believe what you want." She shrugged. "But you asked me what happened, and I told you."
Man, I knew she was bad, but I didn't think she was capable of...almost killing herself while training!
No, there has to be another explanation.
"I don't believe you...tell me the truth!" He demanded, receiving a raised brow.
"Knight, I'm sorry, I won't do it again." She said sincerely, looking at him for a few more seconds then back up to the ceiling. It's more comfortable for her to look up anyway.
He just sat there thinking it over. Yeah, the thought came to mind that she injured herself while training, but the more he thinks about her story, the more unsettling he feels. It makes more sense that vampires attacked the house then her story occurring, but he also knows that trust starts with believing in each other.
That's what I should do...no matter how hard it is to believe her, I should start.
"I should be the one who says 'sorry'. You told me what happened and I should have believed you. I'm sorry." He sincerely replied to Amber, causing her to look back over to him. She looks shocked, but for a split second he thought he saw regret in her eyes, but it was so fast he convinced himself otherwise.
"Let's not dwell on it, what's done is done." She said, sounding more like she was talking to herself than to him, but he couldn't agree more.
"Did you use gold daggers?" He asked. She nod in agreement.
"I thought gold daggers could only kill vampires?" Knight mused, while she gave him a startled look. She stared intensely at him for a few seconds, until she finally shakes her head, looking back up to the ceiling.
"What kind of stupid question is that?" She asked, a bit confused, voice rising. "It's a dagger, a weapon! Of course it could kill us!" She exclaimed, throwing her hands up in the air.
"Well, I thought vampires..."
"It's the only way to kill a vampire, that and water, but not pumped filtered water, natural water: rain or if you have the power for it that works too. Only the strongest werewolves have water as their power. But to answer the other question, yes, we could die by gold daggers or any other weapons." Amber acknowledged, her tone softing a bit, though she could barely believe that that was a question.
"Oh, interesting. Hey, what's your power? I told you mines." He asked curiously, with a bit of firm demand in his tone.
"Yes, you did, but my power isn't special, it isn't even important." She brushed off ending the discussion there.
"Okay..." He replied, trying not to sound suspicious, but he failed immensely.
"I'm sorry, I just can't get over the fact that you would ask such a stupid question." She smirked, clearly amused.
"Uh, excuse me. I'm not the one who stabbed myself, almost killing myself in the process." He smirked back, just as amused.
"I guess it's a tie then." She answered grudgingly.
"Tie?" He skeptically responded, not liking the sound of it either.
"What? Should I be classified the winner? Your question was a real stupid one." She clarified.
"Even more stupid than stabbing yourself?" He raised his brow at her.
"That's why I said it's a 'tie'." She snapped, clenching her hands into fists. This only amused Knight more.
"You're a sore loser." He grinned.
"You're a sore winner." Her nostrils flared.
"At least I am the winner." He responded, watching her fist try to reach him, but he deliberately moved away from her reach, so she couldn't hit him. He figured it was only a matter of time before she actually tried to "smack" him.
"You're so irritating!" She shouted up to the ceiling, looking like a crazy person. This only amused Knight more. "Why did I want to talk to you again?" She asked herself, but he still answered.
"Because I'm a great conversationalist..."
"No one asked you." She responded defensively.
"I thought the floor was open." He smirked. She sighed, shaking her head.
They stay there for a few awkward moments of just silence and silence. "I want to be more stronger Knight." She declared fiercely, clenching her hands into fists. She sighed, and released her fists. "I feel weak."
He was stunned for a moment, but he told himself to snap out of it. "That's only because you're wounded..."
"You know what I mean, Knight."
The plea in her voice, the sadness in it, her statements, it all caught Knight off guard, but he understood completely. That's how he felt with his werewolf transformations.
"We start when you get better." He stated, feeling just as ready to get started.
Vampire or no vampire attack, it's only a matter of time before they do find us. Amber and I need to be on our A game especially since this vampire wants her so badly.
If it's a war they want, it's a war they got.
