"If you're falling
won't you let me know."
- Ed Sheeran, Sing
"Can I go with you?" I asked, Lucas staring back at me with an emotionless face. He began to shake his head and mouthed a no.
"I don't want you walking back by yourself. You could get jumped or something." he half smiled before turning himself around.
"Good having you Lucas!" my mother shouted over my shoulders as Lucas waved back. I slowly shut the door and leaned myself against the back of the door. "He was wonderful!" she cheered, a smile across her face as she spun herself around and ran away.
I got off from the door and walked my way to my room. As I walked into my room, I realized his scent still scattered the air. I walked past my mirror and before I curled up in my bed I walked back to the hideous reflection. My ponytail was now messy and my baby hairs flew from the sides of my head. My eyes were dark underneath only having me to realize how tired I was. But the worst of them all, my cheeks were still a shade of pink.
I knew that I was blushing, I mean how do you not? It was awful how he ignored it. And to make all things worse, you'd think he would leave me alone, but no let's sing.
He had a very nice voice though. Especially compared to mine, but it was something you could listen to all day. And, no, I'm not just saying that because if people sing and I don't like it, I make sure to shut them up.
"Do you like him?" Maddie's voice whispered from the door. I jumped back and my hand went towards my heart.
"Maddie, don't do that!" I shook my head before walking towards my desk and cleaning it up a little.
"Are you going to answer me?" she asked flickering her eyes away from the phone she held.
"What?" I zipped up the make up bag I held and grabbed a bag from the side.
"Do you like him?" she kept her same emotionless voice as she walked her way farther into my room. Sitting herself in the chair by the desk, she began to play with her thumbs.
"I don't know."
"Oh come on Anne, you were nothing but a tomato around him!" she threw her hands in the air while rolling her eyes at me. I began to shake my head once again.
"Now you're over exaggerating." I stuffed the rest of the clothes left into the bag before throwing it into the corner that once was a pile of clothes.
"Do you like him?"
"I don't know."
"Yes you do."
"It's complicated, Mad."
"It's a yes or no question, Anne."
"I don't know!"
"You're such a liar." Maddie hissed before looking back down to her phone. I clicked my tongue before throwing myself on the bed and stuffing my head into the pillow.
Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed Maddie still clicking away at her phone. She didn't have many friends so there for she wasn't texting and she couldn't join media websites without mother's permission. But then again her black eyes and leather jacket told a whole other story.
Maddie was adopted. She didn't look like me or my mother or my father. She looked like her parents. Her family that left her at the doorstep of a church. She was sent to a foster's home and there she was sent to six other families before mine. Taking her in was different. She was fourteen and I was seventeen. She was an outcast, along with me. It was as if we were sisters that came from the same parents, but we weren't.
She had barriers surrounding her most of the time. The only time I've ever seen them down was when she made best friends with Allison McReer. But then Allison became popular and became a big bully to Maddie. Then and there she became home schooled and left me to run the halls of Bridgewood High School.
"I don't want to." I muttered hoping she didn't hear me, but with the way her head turned towards me and the way her eyes glared into mine, it was obvious she did.
"What?" she asked raising her eyebrow.
"I don't want to like him." I stated, her eyes still telling me she was confused. "He's full of mysteries, Maddie. He's like an innocent, no good crime. But I can't help but fall for the pale, tall, blue eyed giant." Maddie let out a small laugh before replying to my comment.
"So what happens if he asks you?" she asked. With my expression, she continued to restate her question. "What if he asks you if you like him?"
"I'll reply with the same answer." I sighed looking down at my pillow. "I don't want to."
Silence soon over took the room. Maddie continued to tap away at her phone and scuff her boot on the chair. Her leather squeaked ever so often when she moved her arm. But other than that, she didn't say a word. She kept quiet and I did the same, because like each other we had nothing to say but breathe. With conversations like this, they were always left empty, it was something we had in common since she broke her head through one of her walls and talked to me.
"Good luck, Anna. You'll need it." she smiled at me before walking out of my room. Closing the door behind her, I clicked my lights off and curled up into my sheets. I made sure my alarm clock was set so I was marked absent tomorrow at school and off to sleep I was.
Even though I crawled for it, it didn't come receiving back.
