Chapter 3.
I picked up my lunch tray and sighed as I realized that Kate was the last of my few friends. I gently tapped in my identification number to the keypad and walked over to a nearby stand where utensils were being given. I took a single fork and walked out towards the crowds of tables.
Sigh... I'm so lonely...
Slowly, I shuffled my way from the lunch line and found myself a seat at a nearly empty table. I tried to place myself in a position that wouldn't require talking to people, but in high school, communication happens one way or another. A boy about my age sat down next to me and tried to make small talk. I didn't really pay much attention to him at first, I was too focused on eating my lunch in a timely manner without getting sick. When I didn't think the boy was looking, I glanced over in his direction to see who he was. I nearly choked on my tongue when I did.
I met this boy at the end of my eighth grade year. With wavy dark brown hair and brown puppy dog eyes, I met him at the combined honor band performance. He was from a different school, and immediately I was attracted to his sharp, dark, and mysterious features. Before the performance, I had shyly told one of my old friends that I thought he was really cute. She smiled at me and at one of my other friends who had heard what I had said. Together, they immediately started shoving and pushing me towards him. Oh, how they made a scene out of it. I was desperately trying to hold myself back on walls, people, anything. I felt myself thrown forward and a pair of arms that kept me from hitting my face on the expensive tile floor. "What a great group of friends you have there... " a new voice said. I looked up at who caught me. The boy. I instantly blushed and stood up on my own, clearly embarrassed as I brushed myself off. I smiled sheepishly at him, his expression unchanging and blank. I shyly got out an apology and hid in the back of the crowd of honor band students. Though everyone in this band had to be close together, I had managed to avoid my so-called friends and reminisce in the shame of my embarrassment. I somehow gave myself a small pep talk and after the performance, I asked the boy what his name was.
"Tris...?" I said aloud. The boy next to me looked straight at me and smiled gently.
"Yes...?" A small smile spread across my face as well and I felt not so alone anymore.
