Chapter 2.
The first week of high school was definitely a stressful one. And so was the rest of high school, but I'll get to that later... Anyways, I still couldn't fit in, in a way. That all pretty much changed about a couple days after orientation, when I spent the night at an older friend's house, named Kaitlin. She and I were pretty good friends at the time, so I went over to just chill out and do whatever. About twenty minutes after we both laid down to go to sleep, she started to giggle. I just thought nothing about it at first. Then her giggling got louder. So I sat upright, looking in her general direction in the dark. She turned over, facing me as she shined a hellishly bright light in my eyes.
"He's so adorable! I just looove him!" She gushed giddily. I just tilted my head confusedly, not knowing what she was talking about; we hadn't spoken at all the time that I was there. All of a sudden, she shoved her phone towards my face, almost blinding me. I took the phone out of her hand, holding it a much further distance away from my now blinded eyes. Squinting, I started to observe her screen. A guy about our age with braces and a bowl-cut was on there. He was wearing a pair of gaming headphones on his head and the caption on the picture was, "I miss you...<3" Pieces of his light brown hair was sticking out from his headphones being too big as he looked back at the screen adoringly. I raised my eyebrow quizzically and smiled up at Kaitlin.
"Who's this..?" Her grin somehow widened more at the query and took her phone back.
"He," She started out, "is my boyfriend. His name is Steven. Isn't he soo cuuute??" I chuckled, receiving a dirty glare from her. "Oh shut up! He is!!"
I shut my mouth into a tight smile and looked up at her, studying her frown a bit in the dark. "No no, I agree. Quite the cutie. Where'd you all meet, anyway?" Her bubbly grin returned and read a message from her screen.
"Oh, we just met at the school's launch program! We bumped into each other by accident, exchanged numbers, aaand.. Now we're together!" She hugged her phone to her chest tightly and giggled obnoxiously. I grinned at her and rolled over, falling asleep to the random and, might I add, weird noises of girliness. The next morning was foggy and the grass out on Kate's lawn was covered with fresh dew. I woke to the sound of squealing and bolted upright, my hair frizzed up in places it shouldn't have been. Kate rocked back and forth gurgling incoherent sentences and clutched her phone as she blushed profusely. I reached for my hairbrush, eye twitching with every squeak and cry of excitement.
The following Monday I saw Kaitlin running down the hallway, about to go into the lunch room. I followed her sneakily and I saw her holding hands with Steven. He wasn't a bad looking guy. Typical freshman look. He was nearly two feet taller than me, he had broad shoulders and a shy smile. I smirked to myself mischievously and ran up behind them. I powerfully launched myself up off of their shoulders and screamed (very, very loudly), "I SHIP IT SO HARDDD!!!" They looked down at me in shock as I landed on my feet. I grinned up at them and walked in the lunch room, wondering what was on the menu for that day's lunch.
Kaitlin raced after me, stringing poor Steven along and started talking to me. "WhAt Is WrOnG wItH yOu?!" She whisper-yelled at me.
"Huh?" I looked back at her with a mischievous smile, acting as if I had done nothing wrong.
"YoU kNoW wHaT yOu JuSt DiD!" Her voice rose a little, she was clearly embarrassed. Steven just shuffled awkwardly behind her, uneasy and most likely embarrassed as well. My smile disappeared and I blankly stared back at Kate, guilt setting in.
"Kate, I'm-" She cut me off.
"You know what, just forget about it, Jazmyn!" She scowled at me, causing me to shrink a bit.
"Kate, please.. Not you too..." I thought as I turned away, tears starting to form in my eyes.
