Chapter Seven

Riley laid upside down on the couch flipping through TV channels. On her own. All alone. If only her brother was next to her. Even if he would be silently playing on his tablet, he still kept her company and she knew he was okay.

Why did her parents send him to their grandparents?

After a week of staying at the Bradley-Minter household, Riley quickly learned that it really wasn't that exciting. Simon and Josh always seemed to find something to do that kept them locked away in their room or offices. Just like years ago when Riley would have to entertain herself whilst the boys recorded.

A slight movement from the corner of her eyes caused Riley to glance over at the entrance. Freya had just entered with a bag of chips/crisps.

Freya too kept to herself most of the time so Riley hadn't really gotten a chance to get to know the surrogate. But she seemed very friendly around Josh so Riley assumed she must be nice.

"Hey." Riley acknowledges Freya.

"Hi." Freya sits next to Riley who has now corrected herself to the proper sitting position. "Riley, can I give you some advice?"

"Uh, sure." Riley is curious as to what she has to offer.

"Don't ever get pregnant."

"Oh. Okay." Riley stifles a giggle. She's only fourteen so having children isn't really on her mind right now.

"Especially don't become a surrogate. You might end up in household like this. It's boring and kind of lonely for me." Freya honestly says.

"But don't you like Simon and Josh?"

"Yeah! They're lovely people, it's just their lifestyle isn't the most enthralling." Freya puts it simply. She finds it ironic how she ended up in ties with Josh once more and Riley still managed to jump on the wagon.

But his child is older now so perhaps Riley is more enjoyable company now.

"Alright, well, good talk." Riley attempts to end it there. The conversation felt strange to her. Something about how Freya acted around her made her uncomfortable.

"So, Riley," Freya starts a fresh discussion. "Do you play any sports at home?"

"Yeah, football. As in soccer." Riley answers. "I play on my school's team."

"Do you like your teammates? Is everyone a team player?" Freya continues the questionnaire.

"I guess I like everyone. I'm not friends with all of them but we do get along while playing. Good thing everyone has good sportsmanship." Although there is that one player that cries at every little injury but she's super nice.

"Are you a good player?"

"Not to brag but, I am the best on the team." Both Riley and Freya giggle.

"The real question is, do you think you're better than, Simon?"

"Hmm... He is an old man nowadays and so his bones are probably brittle, I think I am. I'm an energetic youth." Freya laughs at her answer. Riley's smiley smirk dissipates when Simon enters the room.

"What are you two laughing about?" he raises an eyebrow.

"We're laughing about how you're old and boring!" Riley teases, pointing at him.

"What?!" Simon didn't think that he was either of those things.

"I was sharing with Riley how we don't do any exciting activities here and she was telling me about how good of football player she is. Maybe even better than you." Freya gives him a cheeky side glance.

That uncomfortable feeling Freya once brought Riley had now melted away, opening the doors of a new friendship. Something Simon is not fond of happening.

"I am not old! And I'm certainly not boring!" he denies.

"Sure you aren't." Freya rolls her eyes playfully but Simon sees it as the devil mocking him.

"To be fair, Si, this past week I've been here I don't think we've left the house more than once and that was to get groceries." Riley points out.

"We do fun things all the time! It's just sometimes we need a little break." Simon tries to save himself.

"Why do we need a break if we haven't even had the fun yet?" Riley inquires. Simon does no like that Riley is on Freya's side rather than his. He can't have her and Josh against him.

Speaking of Josh,

"What is everyone bickering about down here?" he groaned, visibly tired and frustrated.

"Riley and Freya don't think we can have fun." Simon pouts with his arms crossed.

"Because Simon, who has time for 'fun' anymore?" Josh

"Wow that's depressing." Riley glanced around awkwardly.

"Listen Ri, when you grow up and you have a baby on the way, time starts moving faster than you can keep up and that leaves no spare time behind for us to play with." Josh explains.

"Ignore him and all his existential angst. Poor Joshy is sleep deprived yes?" Simon hugs him sweetly.

"Yes. And I was trying to catch up on it." Josh glares intensely at each person in the living room.

"Oops sorry." Freya apologizes.

"Look, we can have fun. I'll prove it to you right now! Let's invite Ethan and Vik over to watch a movie!"

"A movie night?! Hell yeah!" Riley jumps up in excitement but Josh gives her a stern look. "I mean, heck yeah!"

"It'll be just like the old times." Simon pulls out his phone. "Whenever it was Ethan's turn to babysit you, you guys would always watch movies together. It was your thing."

"So we're all agreeing on movie night tonight?" Josh asks.

"If that's okay with you honey?" Simon checks with his husband.

"Sure, if that's you all want." he shrugs. He had work he was going to do tonight but he rushes to get it done now he'll have some time to watch a quick movie with his family.

"Might as well have some fun while I'm here daddy." Riley smiles innocently. Josh ruffles her hair.

"Alright, I'll try to incorporate some fun into my life. Just for you sweetie." Josh presses a kiss to her now messy hair.

"Well, let me call Eth and Vik to make sure they can come." Simon says before leaving to another room.

Josh took a seat on a chair next to the couch. Silence loomed over as Riley watched her dad begin to fall asleep.

"Josh." Freya spoke, waking him up. "Not that I'm a doctor or anything but, I think something like tonight will be good for you."

"What do you mean?" Josh grunts in obvious annoyance.

"You're stressing yourself out-"

"Great news everybody! Ethan and Vik are available for partying!" Simon does a little dance. "They're super excited to see you again, Riley."

"I'm super duper excited to see them!" Riley joins Simon's little dance party. Josh and Freya remained seated, smiling at the two.

"Come on, Josh!" Simon exclaims. "Dance with us!" He pulls Josh from his chair.

The older man reluctantly dances with them. Yet there's still a genuine look of happiness on his face. Not matter what's going on behind closed doors, Simon and Riley will always be there to dance in the rain with him.

A/N- Good? Yes? No?
