Chapter Six

"Well, Riley," Josh breathes. "Do you remember this place at all?"

"Faintly. It certainly feels familiar. Although I don't specifically remember anything." Riley's eyes scan the open house from above. "Except... I do remember standing over here. For some reason." She runs over the left side of the railing and squats down behind it looking to the other side. "And, and I think Simon was with me and I think it was Vik who was on the other side. Were we shooting each other?" Riley asks.

"Oh yeah!" Simon runs upstairs to help recall her memory. He stands behind her and places his hands on the railing. "One morning you couldn't help but get yourself into trouble and shoot Vik with a Nerf gun. I was behind you, helping you aim. Boy you loved to pester Vik all the time." Simon laughs to himself.

Josh looks up at them and Freya stands next to him, smiling as well. Both men are excited to create brand new memories to share. And this time Riley will be able to remember these ones better.

"Okay, Ri. I'm gonna give you a tour of the rooms and show you which one is yours." Josh announces. He goes upstairs to join them.

"I'm ready."

"Good. So, this room next to us is my old room which is now mine and Simon's. Vik's old room is now going to be the nursery. Follow me upstairs." Josh mumbles. Riley follows while Simon goes to get her luggage. "JJ's old room is Freya's. And you, young lady, can use the same room you used last time you stayed with us. The guest room." Josh opens the door, showing her the way.

"Or you could use my old room if you prefer." Simon huffs, dropping the two suitcases.

"I'll stick with this room. It'd feel wrong if I didn't." Riley runs her hand across the covers on the bed.

"Perfect!" Josh claps his hands together. All three of them stand there staring at each other.

"So now what?" Simon breaks the silence.

"I don't know. I didn't think this far ahead." Josh shakes his head.

"Umm..." Riley thinks out loud of something they could all do. "Hide and seek! Can we play hide and seek? It's like the fun version of a house tour."

Simon and Josh look at each other and shrug.

"Why not?" They speak in unison.

"Yay! Who wants to be the seeker first?" Riley asks.

"Not it!" Both of the boys shout.

"Wow you guys are on the same wavelength today. Just try not to hide in the same spot okay?"

"We won't don't worry." Josh assures. Riley started her count to 25 while her dads frantically ran around the house looking for a hiding spot.

"1..."

"Nope. Too small."

"2... 3..."

"Oh you can still see me."

"4..."

"We're playing hide and seek, Frey... I was never here!"

"5... 6... 7..."

"Too obvious."

"8..."

"Wait can I...? Nononono. That is not happening."

"9... 10... 11... 12..."

"I was gonna hide there!"

"13... 14..."

"Well too bad, this is my spot!"

"15... 16..."

"Just make room!"

"17... 18... 19..."

"Riley said to not hide in the same place!"

"20... 21..."

"Fine. You're spot is bait anyways."

"22... I can hear you guys!"

"You ruined it!"

"23... 24..."

"I'm running out of time."

"24 and a half..."

"Fuck it this'll do."

"25! Ready or not here I come!" Riley sings out, feeling very giddy.

She decides to start from the bottom and immediately goes downstairs. Her bare feet tiptoe across the hardwood floor. The sneakier she is, the quieter she'll be and the easier she'll be able to find them. If they're not expecting her, they won't hold their breaths and giggles.

Riley circled around the entire downstairs. She checked every room and every kitchen cupboard.

So far the game isn't in her favor.

She figures it is time to move upstairs and hope for better luck there. The girl searched through the bathroom yet still no one was to be found. She isn't sure if she should go in Josh's room so she left it for now.

Riley wandered into the nursery. It was completely empty aside from a plain, basic crib. The baby is supposed to be born sometime in the next three months. Why isn't the room more prepared? Josh is someone who is always ahead of the game. This isn't very like him.

Her eyes scan the empty room before she spins around to leave and move to Freya's room. But, as Riley walks out, she hears a small short giggle escape someones lips. Riley looks around but doesn't see anyone. The door to the room moves a little. Riley peeked behind the bedroom door to find Simon standing tall like a stick with his back against the wall.

"Ha! Found you!"

"Dang it! I was trying so hard not to laugh. I can't help it." Simon comes out from behind the white door.

"Well, you lost so now you can help me find, Josh. I want to ask you first: Why is the baby's room so empty?" she pondered.

"Because we don't know the gender yet. We're keeping it a surprise." Simon explains. Riley nods.

Together they explored the upstairs by splitting up. Riley checked her own room and the empty one. Simon checked Freya's and the other two bathrooms. They met up by the stairs, both with no luck in finding the elusive Joshua.

"Where on Earth could he be?" Riley rubs her chin.

"Do you think he went outside?"

"Maybe. Let's go check." The two ventured into the backyard and searched in all the bushes and corners.

He still hasn't been found.

"I had no idea Josh was this good at hide and seek!" Riley exasperates. "We've literally checked everywhere."

"What if he's moving hiding spots!?" Simon gasps.

"I'd call him a dirty cheater."

"It's not really cheating though is it? It's called playing smart." Simon grins. Riley shakes her head.

"He's still a cheater." Riley heads back inside. Luckily there's an extra person home to help. "Freya!" she yells.

"Yes?"

"Be honest with me. Have you seen my dad?" Riley puts her hands on her hips.

"No. He passed through the kitchen once in the very beginning while you were still counting." she admits. "But I haven't seen him since."

"Will you help us find him?" Riley invitation to play causes Simon to frown.

"Sure. Sounds like a fun challenge." Freya joins them on their search.

But even with her help, they can't find him.

"Alright. I give up." Riley sighs in exhaustion.

"Me too." Simon adds. "Josh! Joshy!"

"Daddy we give up! You can come out from hiding now!"

Silence.

Something isn't right.

"Josh?" Even Freya called from him.

"Joshua! Where are you?"

"You win! Just please come out!"

"Dad?! Are you alive?"

Riley was getting angry. He's taking this too far.

"Josh! I told you, you can come out! Just do it!" she basically screams.

Then, while passing by Freya's room, she hears loud banging.

"Guys I think I found him!" Riley enters the bedroom and calls out his name again. More banging. She follows the sound into the bathroom.

"Help!"

The cry came from the bathroom closet.

"Daddy? Are you in there?"

"Yes! Get me out!" he shouts aggressively.

Simon rushes in and instantly bursts out in a laughing fit.

"Oh. My. God. Babe did you lock yourself in the closet?" he says in between cackles.

"Yes! Isn't that clear? Just open the door!"

"The closet! I thought you came out years ago, Joshy." Simon jokes making Riley laugh too.

"Yeah dad. When I said 'you can come out now' I didn't mean it that way."

Riley finally released Josh from his own trapping. And boy, he did not look happy.

"Since when did closets lock from the inside? You two! Stop laughing! I was trapped in there for almost an hour." Josh barks. He was clearly humiliated.

"Aw it's okay honey." Simon coos. He goes in for a hug but Josh doesn't reciprocate and stands stiff with his arms by his sides.

"At least I won." Josh pouts.
