Chapter 4
We ran around a deserted area. It was deathly silent and not a fly was to be seen.
"So, Haru, you were pretty good back there, you trained or something?"
"I-I guess you could say that." He replied, a small blush tinting his cheeks.
"What do you mean?" I cocked my head.
"Well, back at the prison, they used to make you train for the army if you were too young to actually join. I did a lot of sword training." He explained "it reminded me of my dad..." He trailed off and stared at the ground. I watched his eyes as they began to shimmer.
"I get it. Were you two separated or did he... Y'know, was he..."
"We were separated. The guards took me away, he tried to protect me but they were good." I nodded. He was lucky he still had family. My mother had died at childbirth and my dad had passed away a short time after. I was left alone after that. No one to care for me but my uncle. It wasn't good there either. He would abuse me and make me work as a slave as revenge for killing his sister. So had to run. And I did. I can remember that night I decided to run away all too well.
(Flash back)
"You good for nothing little pig!" He swung another fist and narrowly missed the little girl's face.
"Please! Stop! I-I can do better next time!"
"I can't keep giving you chances you idiot! First you ruin the clothes I gave you then you asked for another pair!? I don't know why I even agree to take you in!" She started to cry as the old man took out his whip.
"Please don't punish me uncle-"
"I told you to call me MASTER!!!" He cracked the whip against her back and she let out a defining scream.
"Master please!" Tears streamed down her face and blood slowly trickled from her lip and down her back.
"You either leave or get punished!!" He whacked her back again and she let out a scream. It continued until one in the morning, he finally gave up and went to bed, leaving the 8 year old girl half dead sprawled across the cold concrete ground. She knew then she would have to leave.
(End of Flash back)
I shook my head trying to change my thoughts to something more pleasant. I couldn't help but run my hand along the scars that stained my back.
"You okay?" Haru asked. I nodded, still blankly staring in front of me "what's in your back?"
"Oh, nothing." I quickly snapped back to reality and gave a quick smile but he knew better. He leapt forward and pinned me to the ground. I was lying on my stomach and felt the back of my shirt slowly lift up. He gasped and ran his hand along my bare back.
"W-what are these?" I sighed and sat off, causing him to fall to the ground.
"It's nothing."
"But there's clearly something there, I mean-"
"THERE IS NOTHING THERE! JUST LEAVE ME ALONE!" I screamed, tears beginning to form in my eyes. I ran. My dad was right. I couldn't trust anyone. I was so mad at myself for thinking that he might be different but no one van be trusted in a war. Not even your friends.
