Chapter 41

•Elsa's POV•

I looked around the room for Jack, finally spotting him near the front on his phone. I needed to talk to him about the whole fight thing.

"Jack." He turned around and smiled at me, and I noticed he had a small bruise under his jaw. "Hey, Elsa."

I sat in one of the theatre's seats next to him and calmly took a breath. "Why did you and Tadashi get in a fight?"

"He took my staff," he said with a sigh. "Why?" I asked. "Tadashi wouldn't tell me." He frowned slightly, his facial features crinkling as if he couldn't believe it. Apparently, he assumed Tadashi would tell me everything.

"I don't know," he bit his lip. "He just came into my room and grabbed it, and I went after him, and then we started fighting," he shrugged.

I nodded, letting it go, even though I felt like there was more to it.

"Hello, class," Miss de Vil sashayed into the auditorium, wearing her usual fluffy fur coat that I hoped wasn't made of what it looked like.

"Today, we're going to start reading through our script for our play."

I smiled widely. I'd been waiting for this moment. I really loved plays. Usually, I was shy, but plays just brought out something new in me.
Something that made me feel untouchable.

We all gathered in a small circle, plopping down in the middle of the stage. Except for Miss de Vil. She, of course, had one of the boys bring her a chair to sit on.

"Okay," she cleared her throat. "The play we are doing this year is going to be A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare."

I slowly thumbed through the pages of the script as a copy of it was plopped into my lap. Shakespeare was one of my favorite playwrights and I couldn't wait to read it.

"Wendy is Helena, Elsa is Hermia, and Ariel is the queen of the faeries. Hercules is Lysander, Ferdinand is Demetrius, and Jack is Puck."

I grinned over at Jack, but frowned as I saw him nervously biting his lip. What's wrong with him? I hope he's okay... I furrowed my brows and made a questioning face at him, but he didn't notice. I saw that his eyes were scanning the pages over and over again.

"Please start at Act Two, Scene One; A Wood Near Athens, and Megara, please pick up Fairy," the teacher instructed.

"H-how now, spirit," Jack stammered. "Wither wander you?"

I scrunched up my face in confusion as I pondered what could be wrong. I was so focused, I completely missed Megara's paragraph. Then it was Jack's turn again.

"The king do-...doth keep his revels here to-night," he slowly said.

"Mr. Frost," our teacher sighed, with a roll of her eyes. "Please do pick up the pace. We haven't all day for your boring and tedious reading."

He slowly nodded, taking a deep breath.

"Take heed the queen come not within his sight; for Oderon- I-I mean Oberon," he blushed as everyone else laughed. "O-Oberon," he tried again. "Is passing fell and wrath. D-Because that she as he attendant hath a lovely... boy, stolen from an Indian king. She never had so sweet a changeling, and jealous O-Oberon would have the child Knight of his train, to trace the forests wilb- I mean wild."

By now, everyone was giving him weird looks. I knew Jack. There was something wrong. I wouldn't just chalk it up to him being shy since he was usually so outspoken. It was something else.

"D-But she perforce withholds the loved d-boy. Crowns him with flowers and makes him all her joy. And now they never meet in grove or green, d-by fountain clear, or spangled starlight sheen. D-but they do square, that all their elves for fear creep into acorn cups and hide them....there."

"Okay," Miss de Vil motioned Megara not to start her part with a swipe of her hand. "That took all of our time. Just one paragraph," she rolled her eyes at Jack. "Next time, Mr. Frost, please do learn to read."

I frowned and blinked a few times to process what had happened. I can't believe she said that to him.

"Hey, Frost," Flynn got everyone's attention, standing over Jack. "N-nice j-j-job," he mocked. His group laughed with him and walked out with everyone else, leaving Jack and I.

"Jack, what happened?" I asked, scooting closer to him.

"It's nothing, Elsa," he frowned at the floor. "Yes, it is something. Please tell me. I can help you."

He bit his lip and shook his head. "No you can't. I've tried. I've tried s-so hard." My eyes widened as he started to tear up and sniffle. "Jack, please tell me," I pleaded. "I can't understand what you need help with if you don't tell me."

"P-promise you won't laugh?" He looked up at me with puffy, red skin under his eyes. "I didn't laugh when you were reading," I told him. "I promise I won't."

"I-I'm dyslexic," he choked out.

"Jack, that's nothing to be ashamed of," I put a hand on his shoulder. "That's not your fault."

"Yes, it is something to be ashamed of. Everyone else can do it and I can't. I can write, but I can't read. I get so scared that I'm going to have to read in front of the class. It hurts," he buried his face in his hands.

"I understand if you don't want to be my friend anymore and go laugh with the others. It happened to me all the time when I was younger. I'm used to being alone."

That broke my heart. Jack; the fun-loving, silly, crazy, smart, cute, amazing guy; was used to being alone.

"Okay, you have dyslexia. So what?" I shrugged. "That doesn't matter to me. I'll never stop being your friend, okay? I'm not going to leave you behind, I want to help you."

"I've tried before. In elementary school, I stayed with my teacher after school. Every single day for my whole elementary career," he shut his eyes, like he was trying to make it all go away. "I tried tutors, and therapists, and doctors, and none of it worked."

"No matter what you say, I'm not going to stop trying to help you, okay?"

He nodded and sniffled. "Okay." I smiled and hugged him. "I love you, Elsa," he whispered. I tensed up, then remembered he considered me family and relaxed. "I love you, too, Jack."

•Anna's POV•

I skipped through the halls with a bright smile on my face. I'd gotten an A on my latest project and I couldn't wait to show Elsa.

As I rounded a corner, I smacked straight into someone and toppled to the ground. "Oof!"

I groaned, slowly looking up into the face of a guy with bright green eyes. "Anna," he smiled, pulling me to my feet. "You have got to stop bumping into people," he chuckled. "Um, do I know you?"

He frowned and raised an eyebrow. "You don't remember me?"

"No," I shook my head, furrowing my brows and trying to remember. Who is this guy? He sure is cute.

"Anna, it's me, your boyfriend, Hans."

I frowned at him. I didn't remember a boyfriend named Hans. Well, to be fair, I didn't remember anything. He flashed a dazzling smile that calmed my nerves and made any questions I had go away. "I think I remember."

"Great," he grinned. "Come on. Next period is this way."

                        •          •         •

"So, as you should all know, Columbus discovered America in 1942," Mr. Jafar droned on.

"Um, Mr. Jafar?" Snow White raised her hand, meekly. "Yes, Miss White?" Jafar looked at her and sighed. He hated being interrupted, apparently.

"I'm pretty sure Columbus discovered America in 1492," she politely corrected.

"No," he snarled. "It's 1942. I'm the teacher and what I say is right." A tall boy with dark hair wrapped his arm around Snow and shot a dirty look at Mr. Jafar. I guess he's her boyfriend.

I rolled my eyes as Mr. Jafar kept the lesson going, giving us wrong answers and dates. This class is so boring.

I flinched slightly as Hans reached under the table and held my hand, smiling sweetly. I smiled back and blushed a little, looking away. Not so boring anymore.

I still couldn't believe Hans was my boyfriend. He was just so dreamy, and cute, and charming, and-

"Miss Arendelle!" I snapped to attention and blushed as everyone's eyes were on me. "I asked you what the first colony was?"

"Um, Jamestown?"

"No, it's Plymouth," he scoffed, like it was the most obvious thing ever. "Nope," Hans whispered to me. "I'm pretty sure it's Jamestown." I giggled quietly and a smile slipped across my face as he squeezed my hand.

How am I so lucky that I found him?

•Mulan's POV•

I grinned at my reflection as I wrapped my hair into a tight bun. Capping it off with a hair tie, I practiced a goofy grin.

"What on earth are you doing?"

I turned around to see Nani with a raised eyebrow. "Getting ready for tryouts," I bluntly stated, turning back to the mirror. She shrugged as I walked into the bathroom and shut the door. I quickly pulled on a pair of Nike guy brand shorts and a guy's workout tee.

I turned around and examined myself, growling at my reflection and couldn't help but laugh. I came back out and Nani's eyebrow raised up further as she dropped her book on the bed.

"Mulan, are you trying to tell me something?"

I gave her a puzzled look as her eyes widened in surprise. "Oh my- Are you going to be transgender?!"

"What?" My eyes got as wide as saucers. "No!" I exclaimed. I had respect for all people who made that decision, but it wasn't the one for me.
"Sheesh, Nani! I'm trying out for the football team."

"But it's only boys," she furrowed her brows at me then seemed to realize. "Mulan! You can't do that!"

"I can, and I will," I nodded. "But what if you get caught?" She protested. "You'd be in so much trouble. I don't even want to think about it!"

"Nani," I stopped her. "Haven't you ever really wanted something? You know something isn't right, and you know you'll do whatever it takes to get it?" She looked down guiltily and slowly nodded. "I have," she sighed. "I understand." She looked up and smiled at me warmly. "Go get 'em."

• • •

I jogged up to the field, spotting a group of boys who looked similarly dressed to me.

"Alright," the short coach called out. "Line up."

We quickly did as instructed, some of the guys perfectly, the rest of us... Not so perfectly.

"Okay, role check. Panhellenios?"

"Here!" Hercules called out. I recognized him because he exercised a lot in the school workout room. Of course, I wasn't allowed in there because it was, 'boys only'.

"Frost?"

"Here," a guy with white, messy hair grumbled. Someone's grumpy.

"Pan?"

"Here."

"Rider?"

"Here." Two boys who looked the same glared at each other. I noticed they were as far away from each other as they could get.

The coach called several more names and then finally stopped and looked at me. "You're not on my list. What's your name?" I gulped as everyone looked at me. "F-Fa Ping?" I stuttered in what I hoped was a manly voice.

"Alright, Ping. Next time, make sure you sign up."

I let out a sigh of relief as he moved away from me. He hasn't even questioned my gender. Wow.

"Alrighty, boys. You may have noticed there are no seniors, juniors, or softmores on this field today. That's because they're all in the hospital."

We all laughed quietly then stopped as we saw his serious expression. "I'm not joking. They were sissies and little girls, so they didn't make it."

"Um, what about Davy?" Hercules asked, raising his hand.

"Broken collar bone."

"Henry?"

"Fractured arm."

"Luis?"

"Broken femur."

"Shawn?"

"Stitches...everywhere." (Hehe get it? Stitches? No...okay...)

I winced at all the painful injuries. I hoped I wouldn't end up like that, but some part of me said I would. I could just feel it.

"But this year is going to be different, right?"

"Right," we nodded. "Good." He studied us, then looked down at his checklist. "Kicking, twenty yard line."

We all started to walk towards it when he yelled, "Move it! Move it! Move it!"

"I feel like I'm in the army," the white haired guy chuckled next to me. "Me, too," I laughed with him. I finally recognized him as the guy from the party. I hope he doesn't recognize me, too.

We stood in a line and I got at the back, hoping to watch the techniques before I had to go.

When I finally got to the front, I did the best I could. I swung my leg back, then kicked. My stupid leg missed the ball. "What was that?" Coach groaned. "That was awful, just awful."

I sighed and looked down in shame. It was a pose I was used to. At least at home, anyway. Anything and everything I did at home was considered shameful and I was supposed to bow my head and feel sorry for myself.

"Hey, don't feel bad." I looked up to see Hercules. "You can do it... Fa Ping, right?"

I nodded shyly. Do not fangirl. Do. Not. Fangirl. On the outside, I managed to stay cool and collected, but on the inside I was screaming. Oh my gosh! It's Hercules Panhellenios! He was the star MVP all throughout middle school! Breathe. Breathe.

"Okay," he smiled. "I would usually call you by your last name, but I like your first name better."

"Fa! Stop foolin' around!" I rolled my eyes as I heard the coach yell at me. "Don't mind Phil," Hercules whispered. "He's a softy, really. He's actually really nice," he chuckled.

"Next drill is passing. Pair off."

I nervously looked around. I didn't really know anyone here, though I'd talked to a few of them. "Hey." I turned to see a tall and fit Asian guy. "Wanna be partners?"

"Sure," I nodded.

He tossed the ball to me like a pro and I jumped out of the way. "Oops," I grimaced. "I was supposed to catch that." I sighed, running to get the ball and running back. Maybe passing will go better?

I groaned as it sailed completely over his head. "Um," he chuckled. "Maybe if you hold it like this," he demonstrated, putting each finger between the white stripes of the ball and his thumb underneath.

He handed me the ball and I quickly reassembled my fingers to match how he had his. Four fingers inbetween, thumb underneath. Taking a deep breath, I tossed it to him and to my surprise, it flew towards him. Where he gloriously caught it, might I add.

"That was good," he congratulated, bring a grin to my face.

We practiced for a while more, eventually switching over to some other things, then it was finally over. Sweaty and my hair a mess, I lined up once again with the boys as Coach Phil paced in front of us.

"Well," he grunted, stepping forward on his stubby legs. "You all made the team."

A chorus of cheers and grunting noises came from the boys and I quietly tried to copy the masculine sounds. "Keep in mind that all of the old players are in the hospital and I need a full team." And he just crushed our hopes and dreams. "But, all in all, you weren't that bad," he shrugged.

He started to walk away before he walked to me and looked up. Dang, he's short.

"Fa, I think you could be a really good player." I beamed at his words and swelled with pride. Maybe he was just kidding when he has said I was awful? "However, you currently suck." Ouch.

"Hey Shang, come here," he called out. The guy I had thrown with came over and crossed his arms in front of his broad chest. "Yeah, Coach?"

"I want you to help Ping. I think he could be really good if he had some practice. I can see it," Coach emphasized dramatically. "Alright. I can do that," Shang nodded and smiled at me. Coach gave a grunt of approval and strolled off on his tiny legs.

"Hey, Ping."

I turned to Shang with a grin while he wore a smirk. "Don't worry about it. I'll teach you everything I know," he patted my back as he walked by me. "I'll make a man out of you."
