Town Ablaze
Once we touched down a little ways from the town we all geared up with our fire proof gear. Group one even grabbed their fireproof helmets so we'd be able to help people.
We could see the thick smoke rising into the sky from here and we knew it was going to be bad. I hope I'll be able to handle this. Who knows how many dead we'll find. Everyone seemed to be really serious and somber as well. I guess even for veterans this is hard.
Lana handed me a gas mask and said our usual masks won't help with this much fire and smoke, but that's all she said as she put her own mask on. Without a word I nodded and put the mask on as well. Once we were all set, groups two and three armed to the teeth and group 1 were also required to carry a cross bow. Since I've never really used one, they just told me to stick close to the others. They did let me take a spear and a short sword upon my request. I have used both while I was hunting in the woods for a while.
The walk to town seemed dreadfully slow. As we got closer and closer the screams became more clear. We all felt the pressure and urgency of the situation as we grew closer to those sounds.
Once at the edge of town we stopped for a minute to go over our plan again. Team two will distract it and try to contain it. While it's distracted team one will start looking for survivors and getting them to safety, while team three checks the surrounding area to figure out what caused this dragon to attack. None of us will end our mission until we see two green signals. One from group one and one from group two.
Group two headed out and we had no choice but to follow behind and just watch. I hope Aria, Valis, Slater, and Ellena will be alright. We can see the path the dragon took because of the scorched ground and broken buildings. Judging by the size of the path it made, I'm sure it's rather large. Maybe at least three times the size of an average house.
We followed the path it made and the screams got closer until we found where the dragon was. Fresh flames were everywhere and people were running all over to get away from it and the falling debris from the houses. I watched helplessly as it grabbed a young woman in it's mouth and split her in two with one bite. It's clear he isn't just a confused dragon or a hurt one either, this one is aiming to kill.
'More' A voice, no a single word, came into my mind and I fell to my knees at the pain in my head. What the hell was that? What voice was that? No, the real questions I should be asking are, who's voice was that and why could I hear it in my head? I couldn't hear for a moment and Lana came over to me. She was saying something, but what? After a moment her voice finally registered and the pain stopped.
"Are you alright? What happened? Can you hear me?" she asked and I tried to stand up.
"Snap out of it, Man, say something," Slater said looking totally worried.
"I'm fine, sorry, I - I think seeing that just shocked me a little. Don't worry about me, I'm okay now," I said as I got to my feet. That was the best lie I could come up with right now. There's no way I could explain to them what just happened, it'd sound absolutely crazy.
"Damn new bees, I don't know why Mitch let you come along. This was probably too much for a kid like you to handle. Maybe you should go back to the ship," Jordan said. Yep, that's Jordan, always the asshole.
"Like I said, I'm fine now. More people are dying while you're all worrying about me, so lets hurry," I said.
"While you were spaced out, Mitch concluded team three's job was unneeded since it's clear the dragon is out for blood. So he reformed the teams into two and team one already headed to stop the dragon, as for our team we still have the same goal as before, get civilians to safety," Slater said.
"How long was I even out?" I asked surprised all that happened already.
"You were out of it for about three minutes. He told us you'd be okay and he said when you came to that they should have the dragon cornered enough for us to find survivors and get them out. Still, are you sure you're okay? I mean, there will be a lot more death from here on out so," Lana mumbled.
"Yeah, I'll be fine. I know what I'm in for now, so -" I was cut off as I instinctively tackled her and the others out of the way of a flying piece of debris.
"Oww, shit man, that hurt. That was way too damn close. You've got some good reflexes," Slater muttered.
"Yeah, fantastic, now get the hell off of me, Moronic Idiot," Jordan said and we all got up. I helped Lana and Mira up as well. We'd better get moving. Staying here longer than we have to will only put us in more danger, as well as the citizens. The others must have agreed because without another word we headed out, watching for injured or anyone still alive.
There were quite a few bodies either half eaten or crushed under wood and stone. It was a horrible sight to witness. Did that dragon that attacked our village cause a lot of damage like this too? I doubt it ate people, but I'm sure in it's confused state it trampled and killed a lot of people in the debris of it's wild attacks.
Unlike this monster, I personally don't think that dragon knew what it was doing. Also unlike this dragon I don't think it meant to kill anyone, not on purpose anyway. So why did this dragon choose to attack and eat people? Did someone from this village wrong him? Or does he simply just hate humans and chose to enact on his rage? Is there a reason for his hatred or is he simply just blood thirsty? At this point does it even matter why the dragon chose this?
The dragon roared as we were leading the people away from the dragon. That voice also came through again.
'I need more' it said and I knew. I knew Lana hadn't been crazy. How did she know? I paused and looked at the dragon over the buildings. I pressed my hand into the side of my head at the pain, but it didn't hurt quite as much as before. My feet started moving and the others called out for me but I didn't stop.
I stopped when I reached the area where the others were fighting the dragon. It roared again.
'These little flies really think they can take me down? What impudent fools,' it said and I gritted my teeth as it attacked the others. They managed to dodge it, but it still pissed me off.
"Stop!" I yelled out and the others looked surprised to see me. "You don't need anymore bloodshed, if you continue we will kill you," I said as the Dragon looked my way.
"Get out of here moron," Valis said. I shook my head and looked back at the dragon. It turned my way a look of curiosity on it's face.
'This boy, I heard his command in my head. Could he be - No that's highly unlikely, but still. Tell me boy can you hear my words?' It asked and I nodded on response. It looked like it was thinking. 'Hmm, I find it unlikely that your friends will let me go after all the people I killed, so there really isn't any point for your rant. Still allow me to give you my name. Remember it. I am Valashtad,' it said and I nodded.
I refused to leave until they took him down. Valashtad didn't back down, but he did seem like he went a little easier on them as he fought. I must have shaken him from his blood lusted haze. Once it was over I fell to my knees and sighed rubbing my pounding temples. Mitch came over to me.
"What in the hell were you thinking, Kid? What was that all about?" he asked. I sighed.
"I just - I wanted him to stop. I - My feet just moved on their own," I mumbled and everything got blurry and their voices faded again. I grabbed my pounding head and next thing I knew I was in a tent on a cot. Everyone was rushing around and trying to help the injured citizens.
"Damn, I must have passed out. What was that though," I mumbled and sat up. I stared down at my hands for a minute. What exactly did I even do back there? Did I really talk to a Dragon? Not that I really did much in the eyes of the crew though. All they saw me do was faint and act wreckless. Should I tell them what happened or keep my mouth shut and let them think I'm a useless fool?
"Glad your awake, Kid, mind helping us out here?" Mitch said as he walked by and also added, "We'll talk about what happened once were back on the ship." I nodded and stood. I started helping out with bandaging people up. Turns out another crew showed up about an hour after the battle ended and helped with finding survivors and setting up a relief station.
"Hey, Kid, I could use tour help over here," a woman from the other crew said waving me over. As I got closer to her I felt my body go numb for a split second and dropped the box of bandages. "Sorry about that, I guess I was right about you, huh? What was it's name?" she asked as she helped me pick up the box.
"It? You mean the Dragon?" I asked and set the box down on the table next to us. She nodded and I hesitated to say anything. How much does this woman even know?
"You are a Dragon Whisperer aren't you? Even if you're a newly developed one you must have gotten it's name, right?" She said and sat down on a makeshift chair. "Look I get why your surprised and why you may want to keep it a secret from your crew, but you just felt it right? I'm like you," she added.
"I - His name was Valashtad," I mumbled and she nodded. She explained I should start keeping a journal of my talks with the dragons I meet and definitely keep a record of their names. She said their names might just come in handy sometime down the road. She didn't specify how exactly, that was actually all she said to me. She moved onto her next patient and I decided to do the same.
Since it was dark by the time we finished taking care of the wounded we all decided to camp out for the night. It was too dark to make the long trek back to the ships at this point.
