Chapter 16- Stage Two
"What is it Lyn?"
"I want you to help me find my family."
"And how would I do that?"
"I don't know how, but I need to know they're okay."
"What makes you think they're in danger?"
"Because I didn't find them anywhere after the fire."
"What fire?"
"Oh, I didn't tell you about that?"
"No."
"When I was in Branklin, there was a fire in our apartment and I looked for my parents and my little sister, but I didn't find them."
"But you know that we can't go back to Branklin, right?"
"I know, but sometimes you need to break the rules to get what you want."
"What happened with you today?"
Before I even move my lips, the door opened and Ms Elis came in with a water bottle for me.
"There you go, Lyn." She said while handing me the water bottle.
"Thank you, Ms Elis," I replied.
"No worries." She answered.
"Did you ask the doctor about when we can take him home?" asked April.
"Yes, I did." She answered.
"When can we take him home?" April asked.
"He said that he needs a couple of days to recover from the incident, and then he can go home." She replied.
"A couple of days? I'm not even injured, recover from what?" I asked with a shock.
"That's what he told me." She replied.
"That's one of Elvira's games," I whispered.
"What? What did you say?" Ms Elis asked.
"Nothing, I was just saying that I can't stay here for that long," I replied.
"You need to stay here as much as the doctor wants, he knows better." She said.
"I guess," I replied.
"Ms Elis, you can go back home I'm staying with Lyn for a while," April said.
"No, I can't leave him alone. What if he needs something?" She asked.
"I'm here, don't worry," April answered.
"Yeah, go home. If I need anything, April is here so don't worry about me." I said.
"Are you sure you don't want me to stay?" She asked.
"Yes, I am. Thank you for passing by it means a lot to me." I replied.
"Okay then, if you need anything call me." She said.
"Sure, thank you," I replied.
"My pleasure." She said.
She opened the door and walked away. It was only me and April now. I knew that she had a lot of questions that she needs answers to, that's why she told Ms Elis to go home.
"Now, tell me everything from the beginning." Said April.
"About today?" I asked.
"No, about tomorrow. What the hell Lyn? Don't play dumb."
"Okay, okay."
"C'mon move those lips."
"Okay. So, I went to Dyrlisia, and the receptionist knew who I was, she took me to Elvira..."
"Wait, who's Elvira?"
"The head of Dyrlisia."
"Oh shit. What did she want from you?"
"It turns out that everything is different from what she told me in the beginning."
"What do you mean?"
"I mean that when we first met, she told me that I'll create a device to ensure that the society is happy."
"How would you create such a device?"
"Exactly, that's what I asked her, but she replied by saying that I'm the only bioengineer in Branklin and that I should know how to create it."
"I'm the only electrical engineer in Branklin, and I still don't know how I would create that."
"Anyways, so I agreed and signed a contract. Now, she's telling me that she changed her mind."
"Changed her mind on what?"
"On the device that she requested me to do."
"So, what does she want then?"
"She wants me to create two devices. One for the people of Branklin, and another for the people of Trinel."
"Okay, but what are they used for?"
"She wants me to destroy the people of Branklin by creating a device that would make them worry about their problems and not think about the people here in Trinel."
"What the hell? Are you serious?"
"Yeah, and the other device is to make the people here happy and that they won't worry about anything."
"Wow, what did you tell her?"
"I told her that I will think about it, and then she told me that I will do it and that it's not an option."
"What about the contract? Where is it?"
"It's with her."
"She didn't give you a copy?"
"No."
"She's playing you."
"I know. She was acting like a good person to me when I first came here, and now she removed her mask of goodness."
"That woman is crazy."
"Wait, I'm not done with the story."
"There's more?"
"Yes, there is."
"Okay. I'm listening."
"When I told her that I'm not doing it and that I won't destroy my society, I walked away and closed the door. She sent someone to crash into me."
"So, it wasn't an accident."
"No, she wanted to show me that there are consequences if I don't follow what she says."
"That bitch is crazy, what are you going to do?"
"I don't know honestly, I'm lost."
"We need to think clearly before we do anything."
"But I'm stuck. I can't go back to Branklin and live normally now, I have to do the devices otherwise I'll be killed."
"Lyn, listen to me, we'll think of something that will get you out of this."
"There's nothing that can save me now, April."
"There's always a way out, you just have to look for the key."
"I can't find the key in this mess."
"We need a plan."
"The problem is I can't think of any plans right now."
"When do you have to be in the lab, working on it?"
"She said that she will give me three days, and on the fourth, I need to be working"
"Did you tell her about me working with you?"
"No, she's so irritating, I can't talk to such people," I said.
"You have to Lyn, you need to act your way out." She replied.
"I can't, my mom raised us this way. I just can't lie nor can I act."
"You need to forget about your past and focus on the present. Thinking about Branklin won't get you out of here."
"Yeah, you're right."
"Don't worry everything is going to be just fine."
She held my hand and looked me in the eyes. I can't lie, I felt something. The spark in her eyes is unique, I've never seen it before. I felt empowered, her energy is all over me. I smiled and nodded.
"I'm so glad I found you, Ms Destiny," I said as I smiled.
"I'm glad too, Mr Lyn." She said as she smiled back.
"How did you get used to living here?"
"We're humans, we get used to anything. It just needs time."
"But it's so different here. I'm not used to this."
"I know this feeling, you feel like a stranger, and that you don't belong here."
"Yeah, I feel like I'm in a nightmare that I'll never wake up from."
"This is Trinel Lyn, the city of dreams. Trust me, when these problems pass by you'll enjoy every second here."
"I hope so."
"How do you like your coffee?"
"With milk, and a little bit of sugar."
"Okay, I'll go get us coffee from the cafeteria."
"You don't have to."
"I want to."
She left to bring us coffee, and I sat with my thoughts. I was thinking about my next move. I can't destroy my society. After a while of thinking, the television switched on by itself. I was shocked, how will the television open by itself? I stood up and walked up to it so I can switch it off. I wanted to be alone with my thoughts, but before I pressed the button that would switch it off, a video of my younger sister Anna popped up on the screen, and I lost my chill.
