chapter 16

I continued my walk around the town, but I still felt shaken up about the previous conversation I had with that guy.

When I got back to the house, I was greeted by Mina.

The sad look she had on her face before I left was now replaced with a look of suspicion. Almost as if she knew I had talked to him.

I ignored her stares and went up to a place I thought I would never enter throughout my stay in this house.

Aunt June's room.

Huh, that could be the name of a horror show.

I braced myself for the worse as I knocked on the door.

"Come in Lia, the door is open. I have been expecting you," she called out.

What? she was already expecting me? How many people were expecting me today. That is not creepy. Not Creepy at all.

I opened the door and saw her sitting on a rocking chair.

"Sit down," she said pointing at a chair beside her.

"So I am assuming you have some questions for me?" She asked.

"Yes I do. Why aren't there any mirrors in the house?" Was the first question I asked her.

I didn't want to start out with anything to hardcore and I was extremely curious about that.

"For safety reasons," she replied vaguely.

"Umm can you explain?" I asked.

"You came here at a good time Lia. There were a lot of storms that hit this town. Last time, most of the mirrors were broken and some of the pieces injured poor Webster, so we decided against them," she said smoothly.

"Even hand mirrors?" I asked not buying her story.

"Yes," She replied simply.

"If you don't mind me asking, what exactly am I here for?" I asked looking at her expectantly.

"You already have Mina and the others to take good care of you. I'm more of a nuisance than help honestly," I continued.

She shifted uncomfortably in her chair. "I just wanted to see my niece. Is that so bad?" She asked making herself look like the victim.

'It's not, but you could have visited us instead. All this trip caused was problems' is what i wanted to say, but I just settled for a shake of my head.

"Any other question?" She asked again.

I gave it some thought. Should I ask her if she heard me scream that night. Nope that would be too weird.

Should I ask her about my mum's accident.
Nah, that might bring back some unwanted talks.

Should I ask her if I could leave her house.
Out of the question!

"No that's all," I said getting up from chair.

"Alright then, if you need anything, don't hesitate to meet me," she said.

"Oh I won't," I assured her. She was going to eat her words soon.

"Also, Mina's little sister might come tomorrow, her name is Sammy,"
Huh, Mina has a little sister.

"Oh, okay then," I replied.

When I opened the door I saw Mina standing there.

"What are you doing here?" I asked her.

"Oh, I er-, wanted to give miss Coleman her medicine," she said looking nervous.

I looked at her hands and saw that she wasn't holding anything. Instead of calling her out, I continued on my way.

"Okay, I hope aunt June enjoys air syrup," I said as I walked by her, not even bothering to see her face.

I just couldn't help myself.

Mina was definitely lying. It looked like she was eavesdropping on my conversation with aunt June. My trust in her died down.

I guess I couldn't trust anyone in this town.
