Chapter Forty
★ You are my energy ★

- Jungkook! -
Taehyung's POV
"Run!" I roar, throwing down some ice, building a wall. It's not enough, the enemy creature runs right through it, shattering it like glass. I gulp, turning around, sprinting down the streets of Tokyo.
What are you willing to lose?
We're back here after we received word that the enemy creatures we spotted a week ago were in fact gods. God's of the underground. They're not the devil himself but close companions, meaning they're not easy targets to kill.
You cover your wounds,
"Stop fighting! Run!" I shout, suddenly hysterical as the gods charge at us. Their footsteps rumble the streets, buildings shake, and some tumble. My friends don't even fight my words, sprinting beside me. "What do we do?!" Jin shouts, panic in his voice.
But underneath them,
"We fucking get out of here until we come up with a plan!" I shout in return, extending my hands and forming shields around my friends. "Head for the mall!" I roar, letting my eyes darken in color. The sky and area around us turn pitch black, our bodies instantly disguised inside the darkness.
A million voices in your head that whisper,
"Keep running!" My voice isn't as loud as before, but it's certainly loud enough for them to hear. The ground stops rumbling and we can hear the shouts of the enemy gods from behind us. They're not too far away, meaning we don't have time to waste. We need to move.
"Stop, now."
We manage to slip inside the mall, heading for a store that's open and isn't barricaded by the cell bars looking door. We're breathing heavy, the darkness cover I provided beginning to vanish. There are no windows in this store, providing us some time to make a plan.
Another twist of the knife,
"What the fuck do we do?" I ask, looking at my friends. We're all breathing hard, eyes tearing up from the extra effort we put into running. Jungkook looks at me, eyes filled to the brim with worry. "We can't just fucking run," Yoongi says, breathing heavy, hand over his heart.
Turn of the screws,
"We can't just die either," Jimin spits back, leaning against the wall. We feel the rumble from their stomps, the building rattling as we grip onto anything we can. "They're too strong," Jungkook mutters, eyes shutting as he sits on the ground. As much as we hate to admit it, he's right.
It's all in your mind and it's fighting you.
"Jungkook's right. We've met our match," Namjoon pipes up, standing up straight as he inhales sharply. "But we can't just give up without a fight. The world depends on us. We can't surrender without giving it our all." I stare at him, watching as his eyes cloud with worry, but he's sure of his words.
Arm yourself,
"Namjoon has a point. If we surrender without a fight, we prove that the evil overpowers good. We can't do that. Our gods trust us. They rely on us, depend on us to save our race. We can't just back out of this fight without giving it our all first." My words ring through their ears, all eyes landing on me.
A storm is coming.
"And if we can't do it?" Hoseok asks, frowning. I inhale, exhaling shortly after as I glance at all of my friends. "Then we can say we tried. We can surrender. I won't allow you to die, any of you. If it gets too bad, we'll surrender." They nod, the building rattling even more.
Well, kid, what are you gonna do now?
"That's the plan," Namjoon says quietly, glancing outside of the mall door. "We fight until we no longer have the will to keep going. We fight to prove what we're capable of it." He extends his hand towards us, a gesture we're far too familiar with. "I believe in you. We can do this."
It's your reflection looking back to pull you down.
We throw our hands in, counting down and shouting Elementals aloud. We leave the store, climbing up the stairs until we hit the top floor. The buildings begin to break, pieces of the wall coming off and falling to the floor. We manage to get onto the roof, carefully glancing down at the streets below us.
So, are you gonna die today,
"Taehyung," Jungkook whispers, lips ghosting over my ear. "We've kept this whole magic thing a secret from them for too long. Should we use each other's powers today?" I glance at him, tugging at my bottom lip. At this point, what do we have to lose if we do? "That's fine, but only if things get really bad."
Or make it out alive?
"Think you can provide us some cover?" Namjoon asks me, pointing down to the streets where the gods are. I nod, kissing Jungkook before I disappear back into the mall building. I'm racing down the stairs, tumbling a bit as I reach the main entrance of the mall.
You gotta conquer the monster in your head,
I shut my eyes, concentrating, letting my dark magic swirl through me. I've got it under control. I can do this. When I open my eyes again, there's a sudden surge of power that flies around me. "Let's do this." I walk out of the mall, staring up into the sky and watching as it's painted black.
And then you'll fly.
It's quick, darkness engulfing the entire city. I'm able to make out everything, despite to begin darker than it would be at midnight. I can see the gods, turning around, trying to make out anything they can in the darkness. Then, I spot Jungkook falling from the rooftop, levitating over the ground then planting himself softly onto it.
"Think I'll let you do this alone?" He whispers, pressing his back to mine. "We're a team, remember?" I find myself smirking, nodding along with his words. Hoseok, Yoongi, and Jimin fly through the sky, heading for the angle above the gods. Namjoon and Jin target the sides, waving at us as they pass us.
It's time for a new empire.
I spot Jin's vines and roots wrapping around buildings, forming what looks like a trap. Namjoon gets himself ready, positioning himself at the side to attack one of the gods. Hoseok floats in the middle of the air, directly above all of the Gods with his arms open, sparks beginning to fly.
Go bury your demons, then tear down the ceiling.
Yoongi twirls a fucking scythe from God knows where turning into the literal Grim Reaper. Jimin spins in the air, winds beginning to pick up from where Jungkook and I stand. I glance at my lover, knowing that we're the ones to make the cue, to sound the alarm.
"Ready?" I ask, feeling my magic surge within me. He nods, holding my hand in his. "Ready." I look up into the sky, nodding at whoever watches us. Then, Jungkook and I race forward, his flames growing as we charge for the gods. It all happens so quickly but things change in a matter of seconds.
And now you're playing with matches.
The darkness cover fades, revealing the sky above us. Jungkook forms a fireball in his hands, letting it grow bigger and bigger. Hoseok shoots his lightning down onto the gods, shocking them, making them shake. Jimin screams, winds swirling faster. Yoongi attacks with Jimin, the two of them charging for the enemy.
Come out of the ashes
Jin holds the trap down and Namjoon shoots beams of light from his palms. Jungkook's fireball hits them and my water magic forms a giant wave, crashing right into the gods. They stumble, screaming, then falling right into Jin's trap. I can already tell from afar what it is, and it's deadly if not treated quickly enough.
Underneath you.
We watch, hearing them scream and shout, squirming on the city streets. We think we may have won, but when they slam their palms into the asphalt, we know we're wrong. "Think you're tough, huh?" A god says, eyes red as blood, dark and taunting.
A million voices in the crowd, they're screaming,
I gulp, staring at them. Their magic power triples, sending us stumbling back. Rage burns within me but I just stare, watching them rise to their feet. Laughs rumble through them, my teeth gritting in anger. No. I refuse to fall to them. I'm stronger than they are.
"Stop, now."
I roar, my voice deep and loud, shocking everyone. I'm charging before they can register it, feet letting me take off sprinting. "Smoldris!" I shout, extending my palm. "Jungkook!" I scream, feeling the fire burn within me before the words even release from my throat. "Lend me your power!"
We'll let 'em swallow their pride,
And I suppose they do because I'm suddenly engulfed in waves of magic power- and it's mine. Flames form under my feet, allowing me to launch into the air like a rocket. Flames engulf my fist, fire dancing around my entire body. I scream, sending a punch directly into a God's chest.
You're turning the tide to true believers.
It takes a moment, but the power that's held in the punch is strong enough to send him flying. Literally. He's off his feet, soaring a good fifty feet into the air and landing into a skyscraper. It falls alongside him, the other gods staring at me with shock. Waves of magic power radiate off of me, my eyes darkening by the second.
Got them in the palm of your hand,
The God stands to his feet, falling back down into the ground. His fellow companions are livid, however, sending their magic power directly at me. It's strong, knocking the air out of my lungs and sending me flying. "Taehyung!" Jungkook cries, my body hitting the brick walls of the mall building, falling to the ground after.
You're playing God now.
My vision fades from black to white, a groan fleeing my lips. How am I not dead? Jungkook's scream is heard, and that's enough for my head to shoot up despite the excruciating pain in my back. However, I'm surprised when I spot his body engulfed in flames, watching as they fly off his body.
What you gonna do now?
My friends rush me, helping me up and asking if I'm okay. I'm too focused on Jungkook that I'm unable to answer. He's setting the city on fire, literally. Fire rushes at us and I form a barricade, screaming for him to fall back. He doesn't listen. He keeps charging, overcome by rage.
It's your reflection looking back to pull you down.
"I'll make you pay!" He roars, voice deeper than ever before, lava pouring from his fingertips. Buildings burn and collapse and suddenly I gasp, having a flashback. Simulation training. It's exactly the same as our first training... So does that mean... does that mean they predicted this?
And if so, how does this end?
So, are you gonna die today,
The gods charge at him and Jungkook's charges at them. They connect with one another, magic power doubling. My heart yearns to go fight with him but my legs won't move. I can't move. The buildings fall, making the ground rumble. The sky turns grey and it suddenly looks so much like hell.
Or make it out alive?
"Look out!" I shout, watching as a piece of concrete falls from the top of the highway. I send water to catch it, pushing it away from Jungkook who focuses on fighting the gods. "Help him!" I roar, looking at my friends. Yet, my heart stops when I find them all fatigued, falling to the ground with tired and pained faces.
You gotta conquer the monster in your head,
Their magic power. They've used too much of it. I push aside the pain, letting my eyes darken as I rush forward, disregarding their warnings. I have to fight. I can't let him get hurt. I run forward, wincing in pain but extending my hands. Connect with me. Feel my emotions. Help me.
And then you'll fly.
I barrier wraps around Jungkook, a tendril wrapping around a God's wrist as I stop him from attacking my lover. Jungkook turns to glance at me, eyes wide with shock. "What are you doing?!" He screams when I rush past him, standing in front of an incoming attack. It hits me and I groan, taking the full hit of the blow and flying back again.
"Protecting you... just like I promised, Cupcake..." I know he sees red because his magic power increases. It's stronger than it's ever been. I push myself to my feet, stumbling, and falling back to the ground. I think I blackout for a minute because Jungkook's surrounded when my eyes open.
It's time for a new empire.
"Jungkook..." I croak, extending my hand. My friends are unable to move, the magic power too great for them to do anything. They laugh, taunting us from afar, pinning Jungkook. I watch, mortified, my heart racing. This can't be real. Please, let this be a nightmare. Don't let them hurt him!
Go bury your demons then tear down the ceiling.
And just when I thought it couldn't get any worse, it does. The buildings around the gods and Jungkook collapse completely. It's in slow motion, the bricks falling apart, raining down on the spot Jungkook stands in. He turns, looking at me through the midst of it.
Instead of screaming, he smiles sadly, gripping the charm around his neck and sending it flying directly for me. My jaw falls open, my legs pushing me up to my feet as I stare. I can't run. I can't do anything. He mouths something, shutting his eyes as the gods back out and the bricks fall directly on top of him.
The world falls silent, the charm falling into my hands. Tears pool in my eyes, my heartbeat heard in my ears as I stare at the pile of bricks. No... no this can't... this can't be happening.. this isn't real! This is all a nightmare! It's fake! It has to be!
"JUNGKOOK!" I roar, tears spilling from my eyes, staining my cheeks as the pain hits my heart. Everything stills, even the gods still. They stare, smirks falling from their faces. My magic doesn't even appear, everything's gone. The charm is all... the charm is all I have left of him...
So are you going to die today or make it out alive?
The world is silent.
He's gone...
My Cupcake... he's gone...
I cry into my hands, holding the charm to my heart. This can't be happening... please, tell me it's a joke... please...
I sob, screaming as I punch the ground. "MAKE IT STOP!" I roar, emotions piling up to the brim.
Then, the charm heats up. I think it's my hand at first, but when I see it begin to glow and actually burn me, I let it go. Instead of falling, it levitates. I watch it, mouth wide open and with tear-stained cheeks. What's happening?
You gotta conquer the monster in your head then you'll fly.
It hovers over me, burning brightly. There's fire actually on it, lighting up the charm. My eyes widen, seeing light directly where the pile of bricks are. It glows brighter, and brighter, and brighter until it blinds me. It's orange, heat rising from the bricks.
I rise to my feet, staring at the bricks. Then, all of a sudden, they fly off. It's like something pushed them all at once, but in the end, they're gone. They strike the gods and other buildings, flying directly over our heads. My world freezes when I spot who rises, my heart thumping loudly in my chest.
It's time for a new empire.
Jungkook.
Go bury your demons,
Fire brighter than it's ever been before engulfed his entire body, taking the shape of the charm. The charm returns to him, a gasp fleeing my lips. He releases a roar, shaking the buildings that are already close to falling. His magic power is surreal, it's definitely stronger than it was.
Then tear down the ceiling.
And finally it fucking clicks. I'm in total shock, but it clicks. The charm. I didn't know what it was. It's a bird, that's all I knew, but now it makes sense! It fucking makes sense! He turns, screaming aloud. "You made him cry!" He has wings. Wings of fire. He's... oh my god... he's...
Fly, Phoenix, fly.
A Phoenix.

Surprise!!!
Who guessed it?
I've been planning this since the beginning of the book! Remember the charm Taehyung made for Jungkook before they started dating? Remember their first simulation training (;
I purple you 💜
