chapter five
The horde had gone, and with the protection spell still up and the warlock incarcerated, Apollo and Aura stepped out into the empty street. They had gone out to find food, intending to stay in the same place for a little while, as they now had the ultimate protection. Apollo didn't like It, but Aura had made sure he hadn't been able to help the warlock.
"You're doing it again!" She yelled suddenly, kicking an empty can at him, it hit his shin, doing no damage, but forcing him to look at her.
"What?" He asked moodily, heading into the hotel they had hid in three days ago and attempting to find a way to the kitchens.
"Looking at me like I'm the devil incarnate." She answers, following him down a flight of stairs, her hair was in a high pony tail and she had somehow hit him in the face with it three times that day. He suspected she took great pleasure in tormenting him. "I had to do it Apollo, he was useless, we were all going to die otherwise."
"He's just a kid, he was struggling because he's clearly not sixteen yet!" Apollo argued, he had been fighting the warlocks case for the past few days, although not entirely sure why. "You have to let him go." The warlock at least should be able to live to twenty one, the age a warlock reaches full maturity and stops aging, ever. At sixteen they may gain their powers, but they still have to learn to control them.
"And lose the protection he's giving us, and the safe house?" She scoffed, slinging her arm around his neck. "No chance."
He pushed her away angrily. "You're killing him."
She rolled her eyes at him. "Pol, you're forgetting that's what we're supposed to do." She reminded him, he glared at her but she simply smirked back. She was right of course, but this warlock seemed different, and as he was unsure as to why that was, Apollo was determind to find out more about him. However, the device Aura was using to harness and control the Warlock's magic had put him into a sort of prolonged meditation and would need removing if he were to wake up.
"Why? Because Father Earth wants us to? What had he done excpet for shove us into this he'll hole?" Apollo shot back, his time on the third planet from the sun had made him bitter towards his father. And yes, Earth was his father, not all metahumans are direct children of Earth, some are generations, other were simply created from matter, which took less time then fathering and raising them. Aura was one such metahuman.
"They say a son loyal to his father is a better soldier." She replied, opening the door, glancing over her shoulder at him with a smirk. She was immediately grab ed by an undead. It sank it's plaque and blood encrusted teeth deep into her arm. She screamed blue murder, the sound enough to shatter glass. Apollo killed it in one swift move, cleanly separating its head from the rest of the body. "Apollo help!" She bellowed, he just sighed and lifted her up, although he knew full well she was just being dramatic so he would baby her.
Fortunate enough not to run into anymore undead, although he had feared they would as she had screamed loud enough to be heard miles away, Apollo ran into the flat that they had been staying in, and dumped Aura onto one of the beds they had dragged in from one of the other flats. The warlock was in the other room, but he had to sort Aura out before trying to help the poor child of Gaia.
"It burns!" Aura whimprred dramatically, snapping him out of his thoughts. Having little sympathy for her, he just nodded.
"You need to sleep it off." He explained, she glared at him, clearly having hoped for a big romantic gesture in the way of help, but she just laughed at her instead. "There's nothing else you can do."
Once she was asleep, which didn't take too long, Apollo walked into the other room, where the Warlock lay. After examining the device embedded into his skull, Apollo still couldn't figure out how to turn it off, and he didn't want to just remove It, in case he caused the warlock some damage. He was about to give up when he noticed a small, hidden button on the side of the device.
Ignoring the specks of blood on it, Apollo pressed it and felt the device fall into his hand. He set it to the side and watched the wound begin to heal he had forgotten that Warlocks had had advanced healing. He finally seemed so much more alive now and Apollo wanted to celebrate, but he did not want to disturb the young warlock, whom was clearly so tired after using his magic for a long period of time, and so powerfully. He was just a boy really and Apollo wanted nothing more than to apologise to him for what Aura had done.
He waited over an hour, just making sure that the warlock was alright. And then he was met with a gorgeous pair of purple eyes. Not just purple but violet. The warlock looked scared, terrified and Apollo didn't blame him,
"Are you alright?" The warlock just stared at him, his eyes wide, he was clutching his head as though it still pained him. "I won't hurt you." Apollo added, although he knew he wasn't very convincing, a metahuman telling a warlock that he would not hurt him.
"Where's - wheres the other one?" The warlock asked warily, after what Aura had done, Apollo didn't expect anything else.
"She's next door." He told the boy, "I'm sorry about what she did by the way. I'm Apollo."
"Pheonix." The warlock answered, he looked slightly less scared, the interaction seemed to be convincing him that Apollo was not going to kill him.
"It's nice to meet you, even after..." Apollo gave up, apologising clearly was not going to get him anywhere.
"I... It's okay." Although Phoenix did not seem so convinced at that. Apollo tentatively sat down beside him and tried to think of something to say. "Can I... I want to go." He said quietly.
Apollo just nodded, there was no point in stopping him. Phoenix got up and almost fell over, he was unsteady and exhausted. Apollo helped him sit back down.
"You should rest, go when you feel better." Apollo suggested, he understood the fear the warlock had. "I won't let her hurt you, I promise."
