chapter four

Oscar didn't like this. He had not left his room for two days and it hadn't just been Layla who had attempted to talk to him, the Vampires he had helped had tried. Why? He wasn't sure. He had agreed to talk to them, but they hadnt made much of a difference. He just didn't want to leave his room. Something wasn't right. Their mother should have been in the basement, but she was gone and he didn't like it.

He knew Layla had done something and the Vampires knew it, he had asked them of such, but they had lied straight to his face. A knock at the door made him jump. He was wary that those from the hospital they had failed to return to, would come for them.

"Who is it?" He asked, the dart board that hung on the back of the door was full of darts. He got bored too easily.

Whoever was at the door took that as an invitation to enter. It was Jet, of course it was. Layla had given up after one attempt to talk to him, Saturn had given up after a day and a half, but Jet hadn't.

"You can't stay up here for ever Oscar." He said gently, Oscar shrugged, which wasn't easy as he was lying on his bed. Jet just sighed and closed the door, sitting down on the end of the bed. "The people from the hospital came looking for you and your sister. Layla told them you're sick."

"We should go back there. Hiding from them never works." Oscar told him, Jet sighed, Oscar sat up and looked at him. He wasn't trying to be awkward, he really wasn't, but there was no other way to get then to understand.

"Oscar, listen. I've been alive for three hundred years, and if there's one thing I've learned, it's that you can't hide from the truth, and you can't just hope a problem goes away. It doesn't work like that." Oscar scoffed, which surprised Jet.

"How old were you when you were bitten Jet?" He asked. Jet sighed, he wasn't sure why Oscar had asked this, but he saw no point in avoiding the question.

"Nineteen." The memory of the vampire who had bitten him still hung at the back of his mind.

"And what was the world like when you were nineteen?" Oscar questioned. "What did you do when you were bitten?"

"I... I didn't know what was happening, I hid." Jet confessed, he didn't understand how this was relevant, but he answered the boys question anyway.

"And what do you think I'm doing?" Oscar continued. Jet wasn't sure where he was going with this, but he went along with it anyway.

"Hiding?" The vampire frowned, that was at least what he had thought Oscar was doing.

"No, I'm planning an escape actually." Oscar replied, this surprised Jet, although with the amount of times they had seen Layla hit him, he didn't blame the boy.

"Why?" He asked, he was curious as to why he was planning on leaving now.

"Layla killed our mother, didn't She?" The question was surprisingly blunt and Jet was surprised.

"Oscar she was an undead." He pointed out, the boy sighed.

"She made a promise Jet, you can stay here, but I'm leaving." He replied, Layla had mentioned that they had locked their mother, or what was left of her, in the basement, because Oscar refused to let her kill her.

"What about your sister?" Jet asked, he doubted the boy cared about her, but he felt it only right to ask.

"My half sister, who hates me? She'll be fine." Oscar sighed. "I can't do it anymore Jet, I stuck around this long, and look where that got me." He rubbed his bruised cheek reminiscently.

"Why does she hit you?" Jet thought he might as well ask him.

"Because I'm stupid." Oscar replied, he said it as though it was a well known fact, that he believed her, and he thought she was right to hurt him.

"No you're not, you're kind, you care, and I don't pretend to know what's going on between you, but if you wanna get out of here, then I'm coming with you." Jet told him. Oscar looked up at him.

"You will?" He asked, he seemed surprised.

"Of course, neither of us like your sister." Jet told him. "I was going to ask you if you wanted to come with us."

"Thanks Jet." The boy seemed so relieved.

"I wouldn't leave to with her." Jet replied. Oscar rolled his eyes.

"You don't even know me." He pointed out.

"I know. Pack a bag, we'll meet you downstairs." Jet got up, and as he was going to the door, he stopped. "You can trust us, you know." With that the vampire went downstairs.

Oscar picked up his bag, he had had it packed for days, and headed out onto the landing. He could hear arguing, and stopped to listen.

"You're leaving? With my brother?" Layla sounded angry, he winced, he should have known he wouldn't have been able to go, sneaking out had been a better plan and he should have stuck to it.

"Yes." Saturn was calm, Jet always got angry when talking with Layla, she wound him up very easily.

"I'm coming too." Layla said demandingly. Oscars heart dropped, he wasn't sure what was worse, staying here or his sister going with them.

"I don't think that would be wise." Saturn replied. Oscar made a mental note to thank her later.

"No, I'm sorry but I'm coming with you." Layla responded, he could never get away from her. Last time he had tried to run away from her, she had broken his arm.

"If you hit him again, if you so much as harm a hair on his head, we will leave you for the undead." Jet all but yelled at her, either Saturn had not been able to stop him from speaking, or he had spoken before she had time to speak. "Do you understand?" Oscar hadn't heard anyone talk to Layla like this before, especially not on his behalf, it almost scared him.

"I understand, but I will not allow you to take him away from me, or turn him against me." Oscar was sure Layla and Jet were glaring at each other.

Oscar sighed and returned to his room, curling up into a ball. He should not have hoped that he could get away.

Ten minutes later, there was a knock at the door. It was Jet, of course it was. "Oscar?" He opened the door, frowning at the boy curled up on his bed. "We're leaving. Are you ready?" After getting no response from the boy, he tried again. "What's wrong?"

"She won't let us, will she?" Oscar asked, he already knew the answer, but he had to keep up his innocence in the subject.

"We're leaving, but she's coming with us." Jet replied, he sat down beside Oscar with a sympathetic expression on his face. "We're going to make sure the hospital doesn't try to find you."

"They will, Layla's one of their best." Oscar replied, he buried his head in his hands and sighed. "I'm sorry Jet, I'm not trying to be a pain."

"Oscar you're scared, it's okay." Jet replied, he placed a hand on the boys shoulder. "Come on, we don't want her to change her mind." Oscar nodded and got up, following Jet out of his room. As he descended the stairs, Saturn gave him a comforting smile.

"Lets get out of here." Layla told them, Saturn nodded and followed her out the front door, Jet and Oscar following her. Unsure of what they would face, they could only be sure that they would protect each other.
