chapter three
Jet was not above going out in the daylight, he was one of the few vampires who
could manage it, he was however, thirsty. God help him if he lost his mind in a hunger-fit as he called it. If he went mad with hunger and bit the nearest human like thing, an undead. No, he was the undead, that thing was... a monster. Saturn followed him into the dimming sunlight. Hiding in the basement of a hotel in the days was becoming tedious, and he wanted to be free. So did she.
The streets were abandoned, which was a good thing. He walked further along the sombre streets, Saturn followed, more cautiously then he was. They turned the corner, to see two figures at the end of the next street. They were expertly taking down two... monsters, but we're they? In a way, vampires were monsters and that was what Saturn and he were. No, these weren't monsters, zombies. That's what they were.
The figures took them down, before checking each other were okay. Humans. Jet couldn't remember the last time he had seen humans. Not just humans, but humans who belonged to the general hospital's 'soldier' faction. Even in a world like this, humans still had power over each other. Drawing closer, Jet noted that the two were young, one fifteen or sixteen, the other seventeen or eighteen. Too young to be playing soldier.
As they noticed Jet and Saturn, they paused, their body language changed, stiffened, ready to attack.
"Please. We need help." Jet spoke, both looked confused. They exchanged a look. One, a boy around fifteen, looked at both. His light green eyes scanned Jet up and down, frowning. He ran a hand through his jet black mop of hair, before turning to the other. She looked much like him, but older. She didn't look like she believed them, whereas he did.
"We cannot feed you." She said stonily. The boy did not look like he agreed.
He whispered something to her, she slapped him, he took a step backwards in shock, clutching his face like a wounded puppy. Jet growled. The boy was only trying to help them, and she mercilessly hit him.
"Please? We're desperate." Saturn gave him a warning look and begged the girl, looking her straight in the eye in an attempt to change her mind.
"We could take them to the hospital." She said after a while, the boy shook his head.
"Layla no, we promised we wouldn't take anyone else, they'll be stuck like us." He told them, she cuffed him around the head and told him to shut up. Saturn told Jet not to interfere, he growled quietly in rebellion. They both knew about the hospital, they both knew they did not allow anyone to leave.
"Oscar, one more word." She, Layla, warned, he shrank back, Saturn pushed Jet back and spoke again.
"We wish for your help to find blood, we do not need shelter, only blood." Saturn spoke up, Layla frowned at them. She turned to the boy, Oscar, and told him something, he shook his head, but one look from her and he scarpered.
"My brother seems to believe that we should help you, and we will, if he doesn't get caught." She said calmly. The two Vampires exchanged a look. "Come with me."
Neither wanted to follow her, and by the look on both of their faces, they would have preferred Oscar to still be there. Even so, they followed her. Through a maze of side streets, and into a grimy, unloved three bedrooms house. She unlocked the door and opened It. A dead one, a zombie flew at her, but she disposed of it with the skill of an assassin.
She entered the building. After pulling the body out of the doorway and hiding it in a skip, full of ash. "Don't tell Oscar." She warned, beckoning for them to follow.
"Why not?" Jet asked at once. Saturn sighed. They entered the building.
"That was our mother." Layla told them, they exchanged a look and Jet began to wonder whether the two had been back to this house since the apocalypse had begun. Apocolypse was the only way to really describe the world now.
She led them into a cosy sitting room, childhood pictures hung on the walls and sat on the mantlepiece. It reminded him of what he had never had, a family.
"Sit down, I'll check the house and when Oscar comes back, you will have your blood." She was aggressive, very aggressive, but she was helping them, so Saturn thanked her before Jet could say something wrong and she disappeared into the hall.
"Whatever their situation is, do not get involved." Saturn warned him, her red hair was the colour of blood and he was once again reminded of the gut-wrenching hunger pains that plagued him.
"She hit him Saturn!" He almost yelled, she put a hand on his shoulder, trying to keep him calm. She nodded.
"I know, but it's not our problem." She answered. "We have our own problems. The clan kicked us out, or had you forgotten."
"I didn't forget." He answered moodily. To be kicked out of your clan was the highest insult. The two were outcasts now.
The door opened, the two expecting Layla, but instead were met with Oscar. He looked nervous, it must have been something about the building, bad memories, bad experiences there that had haunted him. His cheek was still a burning red from where his sister had slapped him, but he smiled at them.
"Here." He passed Saturn the bag, she opened It to find four packets of blood. "It's all I could get, sorry-"
Saturn cut him off, she gave him a wide smile. "It's great, thank you."
He nodded. "Have you, have you seen Layla?" He asked them, Jet was about to speak, but Saturn beat him to it.
"I believe she went upstairs." He nodded and turned to go, but Jet stopped him. He could smell the sweet metallic scent of blood a mile away.
"Why are you bleeding?"
"Oh, I... you have to replace what you take... And then give two more packets... um, enjoy?" With that he turned and was about to go, "don't tell my sister."
After he was gone, Saturn passed him a blood packet. "So many secrets." She mused, he scowled and took it from her. She laughed and opened one for herself, drinking it remarkably fast.
"Leave him alone, he's trying." He defended the boy, who had given his own blood so that they may get a blood packet. "I wonder how he's coping with the blood loss."
"I imagine he'll feel the effects soon." Saturn answered, Jet sighed and drank his own blood packet. He couldn't help but feel like the two humans were stronger than they let on. If they worked together, the four would be in with a chance.
