All Wrong Pt. 1
They were both running through the trees, weaving and ducking through the branches. Arrows whizzed by Ever's head, she heard it hit a tree a foot from her face.
Wally ran ahead of her, looking back every once and a while to see if Ever was keeping up.
"Go! I'll catch up!"
He shot another glance at her, then put on the speed, leaving a trail of dust.
She spread out her wings and started to flap, by this only made her a larger target. With one big flap of her wings, her lifted herself into the air. She swirled through the bushes and the trees, arrows still whizzing past her everywhere. She could see Kid Flash in the distance, and she pounded with her wings, moving forward wth incredible speed.
But just as she was about to dip just above the trees, she felt a screaming pain in her wing. She cried out, and lost her lift, her left wings felt like it was on fire.
She tried to keep her balance, but she was unsteady, and she braced for impact as the tree line came up to meet her.
She curled and tried to catch herself, dodging the trees and looking for a safe space to crash land.
But she couldn't keep herself up, the branches scraped at her arms and she felt like she was being scratched and burned everywhere.
Then she landed, hard, on the forest floor, her arm breaking her fall, but not shielding her from the pain of such a rough landing.
She came to a stop at a tree, and she gritted her teeth, her arms and left wing still felt like they were burning. Tears came at her eyes, and she curled up into a ball, not wanting to move.
But then she heard the sounds of yelling, and many feet pattering at the leaves.
"This way! They landed over here!"
She needed to hide, fast.
She couldn't stand, but she was able to get one of her arms out from us we herself and she dragged her body behind the tree she had stopped by. It had a large groove in the trunk, with many leaves and bushes covering it.
She curled herself flat against the rotting log, her brown feathers acting as a camouflage. She prayed that they couldn't hear her.
Her muscles burned and her breathing as fast, her heart was beating out of her chest and she had to stifle sparks that rise from her heart.
She heard them stop at what seemed to be right outside her hiding place...
She could hear them talking to one another, hear their feet stepping and crunching on the leaves. One more step and they would see her hiding place...
Then one shouted out that they had seen where she had fallen, and they took off in the direction they though she had gone to.
She breathed a huge sigh of relief, her worries now only led to one thing.
She didn't move for a long time, her body felt spent, and she hurt everywhere. She curled up and closed her eyes to rest.
Not long after, she heard another noise. It was getting dark out, and the leaves crunched under whoever was outside.
Her mind raced, they were gaining on where she was, she couldn't run, she doubted she could fight back very hard, and her wing was busted enough that she probably wouldn't be able to fly.
The person stepped closer, she could see their shadow in the dying light, could hear their breath.
She had to make the first move, she could knock them out and fly away, it would give her just enough time to get away.
She poised, her ears down and her eyes slits. They glowed like embers in the dusk, her namesake.
The figure stepped closer, and she pounced, flinging her body as hard as she could, wrapping her good wing around the dark figure.
"Agh! Hey!" The figure was gone before she could do anything else, it zipped away and pushed her with surprising speed, and she was left on the ground, about to pounce again.
"Dusk!"
She looked up, her ears down and her mouth in a snarl, but she paused at her name.
"Kid?" She asked weakly, her eyes adjusting to the bright yellow figure in front of her.
"Oh thank god, they didn't find you. I thought they had taken you away," the speedster looked relieved, his red hair was a mess of leaves and dusk from running through the forest.
She gave a tiny chuckle, but she quickly had to lean back against the tree, and she let out a sigh of pain.
Wally rushed up beside her and propped her up, looking worried.
"I saw you fall, God, are you hurt badly?"
She could only give a small nod, her vision blurred and she could barely stand. Her shoulder ached and her wing pressed tightly against her body.
"Come, sit down over here. I think I have some medical supplies in my stash..."
She hobbled over to the log and sat down, Wally gently setting her down.
He opened his wrist stash, the snacks that usually resided there were gone, probably eaten, but there was a single roll of gauze and some antibacterial liquid.
He started to wrap her wing, it felt like he was pulling out her feathers, but she gritted her teeth and didn't say anything. She had scratches all along her left arm and her face was red and sore.
Wally took a piece of gauze and soaked it in the liquid, then dabbed her scratches so they wouldn't get infected. It stung a lot, but she could bear it.
Next came her shoulder, which along with her wings had taken most of the damage. It was red and raw, and had just begun to clot and scab over.
This time, Wally had to pour the liquid over the wound, and Ever couldn't help but let out a cry of pain, tears at her eyes.
Wally looked worried, and he kept glancing back at the way they came from. He was probably worried about Artemis.
Ever steadied her breathing, or tried to, then she tried to stand up, but wobbled. Wally caught her.
"So what's our exit strategy?" Ever asked, glancing at Wally and holding her now bandaged shoulder.
"Our what?"
"Oh god, we're all going to die," Ever face-palmed, glancing down.
Wally smirked but still had a distant look in his eye. He glanced back again to where they came. This was supposed to be a simple recon mission, how had it turned so bad so fast?
"Well I'll tell you now, we aren't going anywhere. You're hurt and I'm exhausted, so we should rest and find the others in the morning."
He did look tired, he was out of food and had been running since they were first discovered by the people on this wretched island.
Ever sighed, "Okay, but I don't want to stay here, the others are probably looking for us, and we need to get back to the bioship."
Wally nodded in agreement, then sat down by the log with a sigh. Ever smirked,"I'll take first watch," she said.
"Not a...chance Ev," he said, but he was already closing his eyes.
"Listen, I already took a rest before you found me, I'll take first watch."
"Mmh, just don't let me sleep for too long..." he trailed off, but soon he was clearly asleep.
Ever sighed and turned her suit to camouflage mode, darkening into the night, her eyes glowing as to see any intruders that might come in the night.
