All Wrong Pt. 2
Wally awoke in the pitch dark of the night, he wiped his eyes and sighed, scratching his head and brushing away some twigs that were stuck in his hair.
He looked over to Ever, about to call out that he would take the next watch, but she was slumped over, her hair was over her eye and her eyes were closed, she was asleep.
Wally smiled a bit, she was so modest, she couldn't have rested for very long. He looked up, the stars were out, clear and bright against the dark sky. It had to be at least 2 in the morning, he was glad no one had come in the night.
He shifted his body, trying to get comfortable. Ever ears flicked at the sound, but she didn't wake. Wally looked solemnly at her, he regretted leaving her behind while they were running away. The mission had all gone wrong so fast, the team couldn't stay together. He wondered if Robin was okay, or Artemis. He huffed, they were probably fine, Rob was good at vanishing into the darkness...
Kaldur had probably retreated into the water, M'gann was probably hiding in camo mode. He wondered about Superboy though, he had never been adept at hiding or sleuthing.
He didn't know how to address the situation, although Ever would never admit it, she wasn't in good shape. Her wings looked bad, maybe bruised or even broken. Nevertheless, she slept soundly. In the hullabaloo, her ears had come out. It was very odd, they were soft and long, and they lined the sides of her face protectively. Her wings were also very soft, but he had seen her in battle, she could fight, but was better at defending then offending.
Wally stayed up for the next few hours, making time trying to contact the league, with no luck. He was worried about M'gann, if possible she probably would have made a psychic link by now, this either meant that she was captured, a scary thought, or that she was just out of range.
Just as the sun was coming up, the light filtered in through the trees, it caught his eye. He wasn't tired, he wanted to go and find the team, get off of this island.
Ever awoke to a red tinge in her eye. Her eyelids were still closed, her body ached, she didn't want to move.
But her mind flashed with the memories of the day before, how it all went wrong. She didn't really know what exactly happened for the cult to find them.
It was supposed to be a simple recon, observe, report, done. They weren't aware how big it was until they went inside the small building.
Once inside, the building just kept going, deep into the ground. They were sent here to find out why an alarming amount of Apocalyptain energy was emanating from this small island in the pacific. The nearest zetatube was half an hour away, they had to fly in the bioship.
Kid had run ahead, Robin right behind, on command of Aqualad. Ever and Artemis both stayed behind the group, and Aqualad and M'gann both went ahead toward the centre.
It wasn't long before Kid and Robin reported back, they had found the stash of Apocalyptain weapons that had sent Sphere into a frenzy. They had all scanned the area, and the weapons were all there.
But something felt off, like they were being watched.
"I think I hear something..." Superboy had said.
Ever had heard something as well, her sensitive ear fur twinges at the slightest sound.
Then everything happened at once, there was a loud roar, and a crash, and suddenly Superboy had plunged into the ground, up to his waist. It was like the ground had liquified beneath him.
He started to escape, trying to pull his limbs from the melted metal.
"Look out!" Artemis shouted, there were suddenly men everywhere, all sides, and the room lit up red and sounds of the weapons whirred around them.
Beside her, Aqualad was hit by something black, he was pushed back into a wall.
The very ground beneath the group ruptured, the metal spiked and was sharp at the edges, M'gann fly up above, but was shit down by another black thing, it was like a bullet except larger.
"Go! Go back towards the exit!" Kaldur yelled, pinned by the black thing, fighting to get it off.
One of the people took aim again, this time towards Wally.
"Kid! Look out!" Robin yelled, as he threw a smoke bomb to cover their tracks, "Retreat!"
Kid's eyes were wild as he ran to avoid the bullet, but it followed him, even as he tried to avoid it and swerve it if the way.
"Come on!" They all rushed toward the exit, they couldn't wait for each other. Superboy jumped up to the girder and many men fell afterward, but he started to head to the exit as well.
Soon they were all running hard, Kid up front, yelling for them to hurry.
Ever looked behind her, her mind was racing, Kaldur and Connor were behind, Connor was trying to get the black bullet off of him as it pinned him to the wall.
They gestured for them to keep going.
Beside her, Artemis was running, every once and a while she oils throw back an arrow, and it would stop more of those bullets from following them. But then, the ground beneath them gave way again, Ever tripped, and fell, hitting the ground.
She lay dazed for a moment, but got up again to start running again. But this time Artemis wasn't behind her.
"Artemis!" She grabbed her hand, the archer looked dazed, and the people were gaining on them. She pulled her up and started running again, pulling Artemis along.
Kid was ahead, at the exit, looking very worried. They were almost there.
Just as they reached the exit, a bomb went off. Or at least, that's what it felt like.
Everything went white, Ever was thrown in the air away from Artemis as a huge boom rack eyes through the area.
She was in the brush undergrowth, she could see Robin helping Artemis up onto his shoulders and taking off into the forest. They locked eyes, and he mouthed run.
She wasted no time, they were clearly outnumbered, she got up and stared running.
Wally was in the brush a few yards in front of her. She rushed over to him. "Kid, get up, we have to go now!"
He groaned, but got up, a determined and angry look in his eye.
They both stared running, Kid was much faster, and they left the scene behind them. The team was split.
Ever wondered how thing could've gone differently. It had all happened so fast, she was worried about the rest of the team, where they were. She hadn't seen M'gann, Connor, or Kaldur after they had been blown away from the entrance.
She stirred from her resting place, her eyes heavy.
She saw Kid staring at something far away, or maybe at nothing.
She winced as she moved, and held her shoulder. Kid looked up.
"Time to go?"
She nodded, standing up and facing the way they had run from.
It was time to get back the team.
