Marcello's Punishment

As soon as news reached the police station that Marcello had yet again landed himself in trouble, the sheriff himself rushed to the scene without delay. The front of the house was crowded with people angrily pounding on his wooden door. The jolliness and ecstasy had evaporated from the hearts of the townspeople; only anger and injustice dwelt in them.

The sheriff was taken to the "Hawkers Household" where Vincent was being treated by the local doctor Mr.Markos Jeffery. The doctor had bad news and the situation was indeed grave. Vincent it seemed, had broken two bone which could be mended but he had also shattered one bone critically, leaving his right arm limp and lifeless. There was a few other scratches here and there but nothing else was that severe.

Although Marcello was a great and famous artist and he always managed to get out of trouble with the help of his reputation and lawyer, this situation would not be treated in the same manner. Child abuse was against the law and the townspeople would revolt if necessary for justice thus the higher authorities ought to be informed. Sheriff Carson Magconne called the authorities and waited for their orders to come through. The Government was eventually informed of this incident and though Marcello was a reason for their country's pride, he could not be pardoned this time. The Government discussed this matter and agreed that they couldn't have a revolution at this time and agreed upon what seemed best at that moment. They declared their decision and passed down a written order and the sheriff was ordered to carry out his duty without any delay.

Meanwhile, Marcello mourned over his ruined painting; all of his creations were like his children, each a part of his soul and he refused to let anyone get away with harming them. Even though he was in his early thirties, he didn't let the thought of marriage enter his head and haunt him. He knew that getting married would mean dividing his time with something other than his work and he wasn't ready for a step that big. He would wait until the correct time to get married even if that was a bit more than the normal age people get married in . He ran his slender fingers across the painting, thinking of trying to scrub the splatter of colors off. He knew that by trying to do that, it would make the painting look sloppier and uglier. He would keep it the way it is as a symbol of how people not only ruin their own creations and their creator, but they also destroy the hard work of others' just because they cannot tolerate to see anyone else in bliss.

He sat down on the scratchy floor, his unblinking eyes never leaving the canvas, and sipped on to the hot lemon tea which the maid had left in the kitchen. Little did he know that outside his house, the decisions which could shatter him were being taken.

A rapid knocking of strong knuckles pulled Marcello back to the bitter reality. Frowning, he buried his head between his knees, trying to block out the World and drown into his World of wild Imagination.

"Local police Mr.Dawson. This is the sheriff speaking. Please open the door or else you would force us to break it down." A hoarse voice shouted from the other side of the door.

Marcello sighed, keeping down his ceramic cup and getting up to open the door.

"Coming!!" he shouted.

Then with a click, he opened the door to be greeted by the angry and flushed faces of the townspeople and the noble sheriff with whom he had become friends over the years. But the sheriff wasn't smiling like he always did; today, his face was glum and it looked kind of....sad?

"Carson, how are you pal? It has been ages since we last had an encounter!"

The sheriff cracked a small smile, "Not long enough for me to forget the racket you caused."

Breaking into a fit of laughter, Marcello bent down to catch his breath. As the sheriff looked behind himself, he saw that the faces of the townspeople were turning darker and angrier with each passing second.

Clearing his throat he said, "Mr.Dawson, it is my duty to inform you that your punishment has been declared."

Smirking smugly Marcello said, " Punishment? Pfft! It is I, to whom injustice has been done. My million dollar creation has been ruined by a PEST! I should actually sue them. I have been robbed of the money that I worked for. Since when did victims receive punishment?"

Shaking his head, the sheriff reasoned, "Marcello, it was someone's child you abused. He is in a critical position right now, the kid might never even get better. He is just a child, you are and adult. You should act sens........"

Cutting him off, Marcello banged his fist on the door enraged, "What of my harm? My paintings are my life, he ruined them. Who will pay for my loss?"

The sheriff rested one of his hand on Marcello's shoulder, "I am sorry but the decision has been made."

Annoyed Marcello starts closing the door, "You know what, I am done! Talk to my lawyer."

The sheriff pushed the door open, "Your lawyer won't take the case."

"Pardon?" Marcello said, opening the door wider.

"The Government has forbidden him to do so?"

His mouth hanging open he managed, "The Government? Wait so they must have given you or someone a written order or something cause I won't be going otherwise so if you do have........" he trailed away as Carson handed him a folded note.

Marcello gaped at the paper. He had gone pale and looked ghastly, "Exile?"
