Stained Papers

While heading back, Marcello grabs some walnuts for eating while threw some almonds in his mouth, chewing. The sun had set, the tide was low, the moon peeking out from behind the clouds. They seemed dark, signalling for an upcoming storm or light shower. The sand was cold beneath his bare feet, shining in the light the moon was casting.

His hut was curtained with leaves and shed with a thatched roof. This felt more like home than his home back in Lorient felt. It was his protection, something felt so safe about it, like it could ward off the evil.

As he walked, the wind blowing on inside his khaki shorts and loose shirt, his mind wandered back to the stones; the ancient mystery of this exotic yet scary island. The stones had stood as if they had a power of their own and were guarding this island. When he had stepped inside the the circle, on the cool soil with yellow and dying grasses, it seemed odd for the soil to be cold under the scorching heat of the sun. It had a different air, a cold wind which made him want to linger and run away at the same time. It was unsettling and heavy, like a huge tornado was emerging.

He finally reached the hut and ate the leftovers for dinner as he no longer felt like working on creating a fire and making supper. His joints her aching and head was throbbing yet he couldn't stop thinking about the canvas and his passion, about the life he left behind in the place he had called home all these years.

He broke the walnut into two and was going to throw it into his mouth but stopped abruptly when he saw the inner surface of it. It was black; pure powdery black. He dropped the powder on a banana leave and added water, forming a not that dense black color. Overjoyed, Marcello gathered all the colors he had found and laid them in front of him. He took the list he had created and started writing words beside them:

BLACK-Walnut

BROWN-Coffee bean

GREEN-Eucalyptus

Even though he was tired, he brought out the carrots, lemons and the flowers that were slightly squashed. He kept some carrots beside the stale beside the stale bread and the rest of his food supplies that was left after these 10 days. He took one carrot, cut out a little piece from it and smashed it. The orange juice seeping out from it stained the white paper he had laid beneath it.

Marcello took his time, slowly smashing the carrots, one by one and putting them on another banana leave, safe from the wind. Afterwards, he brought out the lemons and peeled them all. He kept the internal parts on the food plate and squashed the lemon peels. After one long and tiring hour, a light green color is produced from the experiment. The color came out really light, that Marcello doubted it would stain his canvas. He took the ink and jotted down:

ORANGE-Carrots

LIGHT GREEN-Lemon(not sure)

Then from the outermost pocket of his bag, he digs out all the flowers that he had found and kept them upon the wooden table. He separates them, creating 4 categories: 3 Hibiscus; 7 flowers he was unable to recognize or name; 11 saffrons; 18 violets. He took one of each flower and started his experiment.

The hibiscus produced a sticky light shade of red but as he already had red, he shoved them back to his bag. The violets didn't actually produce any color, it just gave out a sticky and gooey smell when crushed. They didn't smell good nor bad therefore he threw them on the entrance of his hut and consoled himself that it looked fine as a decoration, just like his life, though he was pretty sure that they weren't. He then started, with the saffron, which produced a dark and amazing shade of yellow; satisfied, he crushes all of them and puts them safely.

A series of yawns overwhelms him as his eyes water, craving to see nothing but darkness and dreams. He pushed the other flowers and got up, ready to go to bed. As he slowly crawled into his scratchy bad, he puts out the candle light with his fingers, the fire no longer burning his finger, no longer hurting him, making him immune and numb to the pain.
