The Stones
Marcello runs his finger on the surface of the canvas's blank page. He couldn't wait to finish gathering all the colors and finally start painting again. For that, he needed all the time he could get in finding them. He packed a sandwich of bread and shrimp leftovers and headed out with his supplies and the harpoon.
Marcello traced his way through the forest, walking deeper and deeper towards the heart of it, looking for natural dyes. At the cross section, he took a left and walked for miles with nothing of use but in result got a dozen a mosquito bites. The deeper he walked, the darker it got, thus at one point he turned back and returned as he didn't like the sound of him getting lost or killed by some animal. From there, this time he took the right turn, the way which was lit by more amount of sunlight. He walked on and took another right turn and ended up in a place which was really sandy and dry.
The place had lots of carrots growing in huge amounts thus he took some for his color experiment and others for his food source. He walked on to a bit deeper area and stumbled upon citrus trees which were huge and looked ancient. They were loaded with lemons thus he took some of these as well. After more digging around, he returned to the place where he took the second right and this time took a left turn. He walked on, coming across a tree which he recognizes as eucalyptus; recalling its uses, he remembers that this tree's leaves not only produce gum but they produce green dye as well. Therefore, he loads his bag with the leaves from this tree.
Marcello then returns to the cross-section and heads to the road which goes from the center. After a lot of walking, he stumbles upon a open area which seems like it is out of this island.
The place is solid soil,no mud nor any sand. Bushes surround it and creepers of flowers curtain it from plain sight. Hibiscus, violets and saffron flowers surround the area, endorsing the bushes. Butterflies wander despite of the lack of light that reaches the place. But the most attractive and strange object lies on the center. On the center are about 9-12 stones, all in a circular shape. The grey stones seem like they have been arranged after a lot of measurements. On the absolute middle of the circle created by the old stones is a few twigs and dead flowers on a hole where three pieces of bamboo has been planted, creating a rectangle. The place was utterly beautiful and he wanted to linger there but something pulled him back: Maybe the setting sun or the dawning darkness upon this place or the eerie silence or the twisting gut feeling which willed him to take a step back.
Marcello rushed to the bushes, walking on the soil where the stones were planted, and picked a handful of each of the flowers, shoving them in the bag and slowly backing away.
He looked behind him, to the isolated place and wondered who lived here and who created this place which looked and felt like both heaven and hell at the same time.
