HILDA MANCHESTER
"I call shotgun" Alicia said out of nowhere. She was really up for trouble today. Everything inside of me was asking me to stay back because I wasn't sure how long I would be able to hold back.
"You can't call shotgun in my car Alicia, where is Hilda supposed to sit?" Kelvin asked her in reply. I was glad he made a response in my defense, else, he'll would have broken lose right here, right then.
"I'm the mother of your children" she shot in, as if to make him feel guilty.
"Right! She is the woman I love" he replied her again as we finally made it to the car. "Alicia sit with the kids in the backseat" he told her firmly.
The kids were happy to sit with her while she only frowned at that. She haven't met her kids in a while and instead of wanting to spend every little moment she could with her, she was fighting for a seat next to Kelvin. A man that would never be hers.
I gave Kelvin a loving smile as I got into the passenger seat right next to him. The kids wouldn't stop their little chit chats and questions as we headed for the park.
"If I have to choose one mommy, I would choose the one I see everyday". Jade commented.
They had asked Kelvin which of their mommies he likes so much and why he allows only me in his house. They thought they needed to choose one mother as well.
"That is Hilda but she is not even our real mommy. I want my real mommy". Jason for the first time went against his sister's opinion.
"She takes care of us and gives us very nice foods and ice creams" Jade told her brother!
"Daddy cooks the food and mommy can buy ice creams too" Jason shot right back.
"But who takes care of us?" Jade asked making a total valid point which her brother could not find a response to. Instead of giving his sister a response he turned to Kelvin.
"Which mommy would you choose?". Kelvin was short of words for a moment.
"You don't have to choose, they both love you and are your mommies!" He finally told them after which he gave me an apologetic look which I just nodded to. I understood where he was coming from, the kids were to young to understand.
"But the question was who you would choose, me or her?" Alicia asked out of no where and the kids waited eagerly for a response.
"Do not try cause enmity between the kids here, as a parent, you should know better" he replied her and finally found a spot to park in.
"Just say you'd choose her, you already did" she replied. Were the kids feelings so irrelevant to her?
"Alicia please!" He replied and got out of the car.
The whole issue died down quickly as we tried having fun for the kid's sake. It wasn't until I was left out of it all and they both assumed the parents role with their kids while all I could do was observe.
Even when we took a ride in the ferry, she was right by him while I could only watch them from behind. They were so absorbed with themselves and the kids that I was completely forgotten.
"Let's get into that" Jade shouted. It was a ride in series of moving tree houses.
We got the tickets and Kelvin helped the kids in as it was quite high. He turned around and picked Alicia up, getting her in. I only scoffed at them while he helped her settle in. It was so annoying that I refused his offer, all day she had come first to him and I felt like the stranger in what seemed like their one big happy family.
Their family day out was finally over and Alicia got dropped off at her home, the kids stayed back to spend a few days with her while Kelvin and I returned home. I didn't miss Alicia's face when Kelvin walked her to do the door and gave her a hug. It was a look of triumph and she didn't fail to rub it in my face.
The drive home was completely silent as I wasn't going to give him any sort of audience after all he performed out there today. I couldn't let him treat me as an option when Alicia was there, no fucking way!
"You've been quiet" he said as we entered the house but I refused to satisfy him with a response. I ignored him and crashed in the sofa ready to distract myself with a movie.
"Baby!" He said trying to get my attention which he finally got!
"Don't Kelvin, just don't! What did you expect from me? Dancing all around and celebrating how you and your what again? What should I call her? Made a fool out of me! Was that it? The plan was to put me on the sideline?" I was yelling at him with all of my might, I was angry, frustrated but most of all felt humiliated.
"What would you have had me do Hilda? When she made it so obvious to kids how you came first to me. It's a known fact that you are the first in my heart but do we have to show the kids that?"
"Oh, I bet it would be better showing the kids how their real mother came first!" I replied him.
"Hilda....."
"If Alicia still stays a part of our lives things can never work well between us. Can you see how things are gradually falling apart?"
"You are making it fall apart when you fail to understand me" he yelled back at me. This was beyond it for me, my face fell as I became less pissed off and more hurt.
"Me? Fail to understand? Have I ever for once been selfish as regards you and your complicated triangle with your kids? You fucking asshole" I shot back at him and walked out of the house.
He kept calling after me but I ignored! How could he have the gut to tell me that I was the reason things were falling apart? I should have known the moment those kids were confirmed to be his that one day, this would happen.
For the first time, I appreciated Khloe giving me her house key and me keeping that key in my car. I drove straight down to her house in anger, got myself a bowl of ice cream which thankfully she always have and drowned myself in the movie Frozen for the umpteenth time.
