Chapter Five

Getting these chapters done very quickly lately! Thanks for all the feedback guys, I think it really helps me rush.

So, incase you didn't know, I was accepting new characters for the story! I was actually very selective with them because I really wanted them to have a meaning to the story instead of just a short part!

A new character you'll see is Aaron Phoenix, he makes a small appearance here. Thanks Jozamber for your character!

Chapter Five: Unforgivable

It was officially the first day of my third year and classes were about to begin. Lucky me, I had Snape first. My favorite person in the entire world. I entered the class and he gave me a disgruntled look. Guess he hadn't changed all summer. I made a vow to myself though that I would at least try to get good grades this year. If I wanted to get away from my parents, then I'd need money which would require getting a job. I had all the time in the world to do that, but might as well start trying to pass my classes now.

Snape of course was in a bad mood once again on the first day because he was stuck teaching Potions when we knew he wanted to be the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher. It went to that crazy new guy though. I had him next. I had to admit I was a little bit scared, he seemed even scarier than Snape. Potions was basically a run through of last year, even though I honestly didn't know anything. Snape asked me questions to embarrass me yet never took away any points where as if one of the Hufflepuffs got anything wrong, they got five points taken away.

Finally the class ended and I was the first one out the door, technically because Snape seated me in the corner next to the door. Eowyn came right up behind me. "Merlin I'm so nervous for our next class," she said with a look of fear in her eyes.

"Don't be too scared," Dasha said. "Dumbledore hired him as a Professor, so he must know something about the Dark Arts. Who could be worse than Lockhart?"

"I would give anything to have him back as a Professor!" Eowyn said. "I mean...those eyes...that hair."

"That useless information we learned about his favorite color being Lavender," Dasha said rolling her eyes. "Thank Merlin he was our teacher first year and not fifth, otherwise we'd all be screwed for owls. At least this new teacher looks as though he's had experience with Defense Against the Dark Arts."

"Or just Dark Arts in general," Eowyn pointed out. "Rather creepy looking if you ask me." I continued listening to them argue over Lockhart or the possible new Professor Moody. Yet if you ask me, I would say Professor Lupin was perfect. I wish he was still our Professor. Jake was walking down the hall opposite from me.

"Carlie!" he called. Once again it had begun. A few older Gryffindor girls gave me snooty look for talking to him. It wasn't like we were dating or anything, he was just a friend.

"Hey Jake," I responded walking over to him after telling Dasha and Eowyn I'd meet up with them at class. "I didn't get to talk to you last night. Wow that whole Triwizard Tournament thing is shocking, I'm furious Quidditch is cancelled!"

"I know," he agreed. "What sucks even worse is that I don't turn seventeen until a few months after the deadline. I can't even enter." Thankfully, I thought. It sounded dangerous. I'd hate if any of my real friends were in it.

"Oh yeah...sucks," I lied. "How's Gabe taking the whole Quidditch thing?" I asked him. I knew it was their sixth year which meant Quidditch was going to start getting pretty important for the big time.

"He was mad until he decided he was going to put his name in the Goblet. Lucky him, he turns seventeen at the end of this month so he makes it in time." I hadn't really grown any closer with his other friends. Jake was the only one I stayed in contact with over the summer and the only one who I stopped to have conversations with in the hall. The other boys I would just say hi too or talk to them at Quidditch games.

"Well, maybe he'll get picked," I said.

"Yeah, well I better run I have Astronomy. Any free classes today?"

"I have a study last, but it's not like I use it anyway." I laughed. I preferred to do my homework at night when I couldn't sleep.

"Alright, I'll meet you at the library then? Bye." He took off. Guess I was going to the library then. Since when did Jake go to the library anyways? Looking around I noticed the hallway was basically empty. I started walking fast towards the stairs when they changed. Really stairs, really? I was on the wrong floor. It took me five minutes to finally get to the right floor and make it class, when I realized it was just about to begin. Well at least I wasn't late.

I walked in just in time but I was the last one and everyone was almost seated. "Put your books away. You won't need them." I noticed it was Professor Moody who was speaking. He wasn't even facing the class room. Thankfully I slipped into a seat in the back next to one of the Slytherin boys. "You," he said turning and looking at me. "Ten seconds before class begins. What's your name?"

"Carlie Nyx," I said a little lower than usual. I wasn't even late, how did he even know because he wasn't looking and I was very quiet.

"Nyx..." He said giving me a weird look. I glanced between Dasha and Eowyn. Wow this new Professor was really creepy. He said my name as if he knew me. "Right then. I read a letter from Professor Lupin and I see you've covered Dark creatures. What I'm going to teach you is Dark Magic and what it can do to other people." His voice was raspy and seemed angry. He was going to basically teach us fighting spells.

He began walking around his desk. "According to the Ministry and their guidelines I'm only supposed to be teaching countercurses. I'm not supposed to be showing you the dark side of curses until your all sixth year. But what good'll that do? I say learn it quick as you can!" He slammed his fist onto the desk and a few people in the class jump. "I say you need to know what you're up against! And you need to know what you are fighting against. An attacker isn't going to tell you they are about to attack you, now are they?" He glanced around the room with his crazy eye moving all around.

Everyone in the room was silent. This teacher sure was going to be showing us much more than Lockhart ever did. Maybe even more than Lupin. "Now, anyone know which curses are punishable by Ministry law?" His eye travelled around the room. No one made any moves when slowly Dasha raised her hand. "Yes and your name?"

"Dasha Scott, Professor and I believe I read about...the Unforgiveable curses." Dasha answered. I could tell she was not positive because she hesitated. I hope she was right for her own sake.

"Yes," he said nodding his head. Dasha quickly smiled to herself, she loved to be right. "The Unforgivable curses are the Imperius curse, the Cruciatus curse, and the killing curse." Those sounded dangerous just the way they were. The killing curse? That was something I pray I never witness.

Moody then showed us the three scariest spells I have ever seen. The first one, Imperio, had complete control over your body. He demonstrated on one of the class room spiders. The next one was even worse, Crucio, the spider shrieked in pain. You could just tell by the way it flinched and twitched that the pain was unbearable. The very final one, Avada Kedavra, was the most horrifying. One mutter of the spell and the spider was dead.

"Before you go... begin to prepare yourself, no homework, but for the next few classes I will begin to use the Imperius curse against you and you must not allow me. Go on," Moody said and then left the classroom himself. I did not want anyone doing the imperius curse on me.

Lunch was interesting. Draco came in the Great Hall fuming with anger. Pansy leaped up to ask him what was wrong. "Moody turned me into a damn ferret!" ge growled and sat down. I couldn't help but let out a small laugh and with that I got a returned glare. It must have been funny to see. I wished I was there to see it.

After my next few classes I went to the library for my study period. I looked around to see if I could find Jake and noticed he was already at a table in the back. It was strange to see him in the library. Whenever I saw him we were either hanging out by the Quidditch pitch or out in the courtyard. This felt out of place. I walked over and took a seat across from him. I only had Potions homework of course and it was an essay due in a few days on a sleeping draught. "Hi," I greeted as I sat.

"Oh hey," he said while looking up. On the table in front of him were a series of books entitled 'Apparition'.  "Studying for the test already, it isn't until almost the end of the year, but I want to avoid splinching at all cost." I gave him a confused look, splinching? "Splinching means apparating yourself but leaving a part behind..." I think my mouth dropped because he laughed at my response.

"That does not sound fun at all..." I said now fearing for when I have to start preparing. I had no idea apparting would be that difficult.

"It isn't and neither are these books so distract me," he said with a laugh while shutting the books. Jake leaned back in his chair. Although his tan was beginning to fade, he still stuck out amongst the other students in the library.

"Okay, well..." I said trying to think of things to talk about. "Have you heard of anyone who is going to put their names in the Goblet?"

"Yes, actually," he said smiling. "Fred and George don't turn seventeen until April, but I overheard them in the common room last night thinking up ways to put their names in." I laughed and shook my head, they would try to get through an aging line. "Gabe and Angelina are as well. I think they're the only sixth year Gryffindors who are. There are a few seventh years that are planning on it. I know Cedric Diggory from Hufflepuff is putting his name in. I think a few Ravenclaws in my class are planning on it, and obviously I don't know any Slytherins who are going to enter." I nodded, there weren't too many entering. "Oh, and that guy over there," he said and pointed to the tall chestnut haired boy standing over by the bookcase. I've seen him around before. "Aaron Phoenix I think."

"So out of everyone you've heard of, who do you think will get pick?" I asked him curiously.

"Well, don't tell Gabe this..." he said lowering his voice. "I don't think it'll be him. He's great at physical activity but this tournament also requires a lot of spell knowledge and he just doesn't have it." I nodded agreeing. Gabe did not get very good grades. "If it was down to two people, I think it would be between Cedric Diggory and Aaron Phoenix. They're also both Hufflepuffs."

"Why?" I asked, weird how they were both Hufflepuffs. Not to be rude or anything, but Hufflepuff? Gryffindor students were brave, Ravenclaw students were clever, and Slytherin students would just be determined to win...so how come he though the students that valued loyalty would have the best chance?

"Well Cedric is a sixth year and I have a lot of classes with him, he's also one of the top students and is a pretty good Quidditch player. Aaron's a sixth year too. He and Cedric are always neck and neck with grades. I bet it'll be down to those two." I nodded, they both did sound pretty good for Hogwart's Champion. The Slytherin's would be furious if a Hufflepuff was picked. I don't know what it was but for some reason Slytherin's just did not like Hufflepuffs.

"Guess we'll have to see," I said.
