Chapter Six Playing With Fire
+
"HEY, IT'S ME. I'm home now, and you should probably call me back when you get a chance. I know you've been busy with work the past few days, but... We should talk. I'm sorry for avoiding you."
"Anyways, call me when you can. I love you," Anna sighed, clicking her phone off. Her brother had gone MIA and she felt horrible, considering the fact that she'd been avoiding him like the plague.
Her phone began to ring, and a smile hit her face as she answered, "You called back that quick? I guess the station isn't busy."
"Anna, I think you should come over. It's important."
"Scott? What's going on?" She asked, fear in her voice. "Is my brother okay?"
"Yeah, he's just – Just come. I'll text you the address."
+
"I'm sorry, I ran here all the way and it started raining and – I don't drive but I was so worried that-"
Scott stood up, placing his hand on Anna's wet shoulder, "He's fine, it's okay. Take your time."
She took a deep breathe, "Where is he?"
"Getting changed," Lydia pressed her hips together, "He was burned." Anna's eyes widened in fear, "How badly?"
"It's okay, I'm fine," Parrish assured her, entering the room. Anna lightly pushed Scott aside, running up and engulfing her brother into a hug. He hugged her back, holding tightly as he took a deep breathe. "Don't do that again."
Jordan laughed lightly, pulling away. "I didn't really ask Haigh to set me on fire."
"He covered you in gasoline?" A man Anna didn't recognize asked, making Jordan turn. Lydia walked closer to him, "It's the hair and nails, isn't it? The parts of the body that are essentially dead."
The dark haired man rolled his eyes, "Well, they should be gone."
"I was set on fire," Jordan sighed, "All of me should be gone."
"Not if you're like us."
"Like you?" Jordan asked, turning to his sister. She nodded lightly, "Like me. But there's no way."
The man from before nodded, "Yeah, I'm with her. I don't think he's like us."
"Then what is he?" Lydia asked, staring at the siblings. "Male witches are extremely rare, and I would've noticed sooner. He's not like me," Anna promised, shaking her head. Jordan squinted his eyes, "A male witch?"
"And who are you?" The man asked, staring at the tiny girl. "Anna. Who are you?"
Derek turned away from her, not expecting the same attitude he had given her to be dished back. "There might be something in the bestiary. Did you try Argent?" He sighed, ignoring the eyes blazing into the side of his head. Scott shook his head, "I don't know where he is."
"Okay, hold on. What's a bestiary? Actually, that's not even my first question," He paused, looking at his sister. Just – Just tell me one thing. Are all of you like Lydia? Are you all psychic? Does this have anything to do with mom?"
Anna shook her head, "I don't know. I don't know what happened with Mom. She's not – We're not psychic like Lydia. I promise I will explain it to you later," Anna gave him sad eyes, before looking down at her feet.
"Okay. Then what are you?"
+
"What's a Kanima?" Jordan asked, Anna wanting to know as well. "We'll get back to that. Just know that everyone like us, everyone with some kind of supernatural ability is on the dead pool."
"But I don't even know what I am."
Derek, who finally gave his name to Anna, huffed loudly, "I'm pretty sure they don't care."
"How many professional assassins are we talking about?" Jordan asked, looking around. Lydia took a seat on Derek's couch, "We're starting to lose count."
"But is it still just professionals?" Anna asked, clearing her throat. "She's right," her brother nodded, "I don't think Haigh's ever tried anything like this. I think he was taking a chance."
"That means anyone with the dead pool could take a chance," Derek concluded. The deputy sighed, "But if Haigh had it, then who else does? How easy is it to get this thing now?"
+
"I can't believe it printed out at school," Anna scoffed, holding the phone to her ear as she played with her hair in the mirror.
"Well maybe we should all stay close together. Is your brother home tonight?"
"No," She huffed, deciding to just leave it down. "He had work, again. I'm pretty sure Stiles and Lydia are there – by the way, are they like, a thing?"
Scott laughed, holding his phone tightly. "I think you're forgetting Malia."
"Right," Anna sighed. "So if you're gonna be alone all night, maybe you should come out with me."
"I mean - me and Liam. And Malia's going too."
"Is Kira? Where's she been, since everything with her mom?" Anna asked, still looking at herself. Maybe I should get ready, then.
"Honestly, I'm not sure. I've called and texted, but she hasn't really answered, so..."
"I guess I'll see you alone then. Can you pick me up?"
"It's a date! I mean, like, I'll be there. See you then, bye!" Scott hurried out, making Anna confused as she placed her phone down.
+
"How the hell did you managed to get a DJ?" Anna gasped, feeling herself sweat as she watched the bonfire. Scott let out a laugh, shrugging, "Beacon Hills parties don't fail."
Anna rolled her eyes, looking at him. "And yet, we're here in fear."
He sighed lightly, "Yeah, I know."
"There's Malia!" She smiled at him, pointing to the dancing coyote.
"Hey!" Scott greeted, walking over. "Hey! What are you doing here?" Malia asked as she jogged around. "Trying to make sure no one gets hurt."
"What about you?" Anna asked, her voice trying to be as loud as the music. "Getting drunk," Malia smiled, making Anna laugh.
"I don't mean to ruin your night, but we kind of can't get drunk," Scott smiled at his pack mate, making her furrow her brows. "What?"
"I think it has something to do with our healing – but trust me, I've tried. You're not going to feel anything," Scott explaining, making Malia shrugged. Anna grabbed her flash lightly, "Well, I don't heal," She paused, swigging it quickly. "Hopefully I'll feel something."
"Tell him that, then." Malia nodded towardsLiam. The younger beta sat on a bench, pouring his own drink. Anna took another shot, before making a face and handing the flask back to Malia. "Thanks," Malia smiled, taking a swig herself.
"Listen, we had our reasons. Stiles and I –"
"I don't wanna talk about Stiles," Malia sighed. "I just wanna dance, and get drunk!"
She stumbled back, Scott reaching forward to grab her. "You are drunk," He sighed, making her giggle. "Yup!"
Anna took the flask from her lightly, "That's enough for you, and more for me." She smiled at the coyote, taking a longer swig than before.
"Is this what drunk feels like? I don't feel as good as I hoped," Malia asked, stepping backwards. "I don't think it's suppose too," Anna agreed, watching Liam. She quickly threw the flask, thanking herself for being a heavy weight.
"What's in this? What'd you drink?" Scott asked, wrapping Malia's arm around him. "It's vodka."
Scott sighed, Anna trailing behind him. "Just stay on your feet."
+
Anna watched as Liam and Malia sat quietly, looking around. "How much did he drink?" She asked Liam's friend, Mason.
"Not enough to get him like this."
She sighed, feeling eyes on her as she looked around. Scott gripped her shoulder lightly, dozing in and out. "How much did he?"
"Nothing," She felt worry grabbing at her, "Not even a sip. What the hell's going on?"
"It's not the drinks, Anna," Scott slurred, looking around. "It's the music."
"I have to –"
"I have to turn off the music," Scott struggled to get out. "Scott, stop it. I'll go," Anna pushed him lightly. "No, stay with them." He fought, stepping forward.
Mason nodded, making Anna scoff. She followed softly after Scott, occasionally looking back to make sure the other two were safe.
"What are you doing?" Scott asked, looking at her. "You're not going by yourself, Scott. Not like this." She sighed, grabbing his arm lightly. Anna began to guide hum through. "Show me where to go."
"The DJ," Scott trailed off, falling slightly. Anna tried her best to hold him up, the heavy weight pulling her down. Security guards grabbed him from her, pushing Anna aside. "Hey!" She yelled, making them turn to face her. A guard pulled her towards him, holding her tightly.
Anna struggled against him, closing her eyes tightly. She began to use her magic, giving the man struggling against her a headache. He yelled in pain, making another guard drop Scott as he pushed Anna into a nearby pole.
And all she saw was black.
