It had been one day.

This time, Amber was the one waiting.

At the edge of the rooftop.

Ermelinda walked up to her until she was right behind her. Amber didn't seem to have heard her.

Ermelinda opened her mouth.

Amber jumped two meters to the next rooftop. She spun around and smirked.

"How did you know?"

"You were out of breath when you jumped onto this rooftop."

"Oh. We need to go to the mines. I stashed a chunk I found there."

"Which mine? And when did you find it?"

"The gold mine. It was last week."

Without saying anything, Amber knelt and pressed some buttons on her board. Another switch made a small click as she flipped it.

Ermelinda did the same, then took off from the rooftop, riding higher and higher. Amber followed.

They soon left the ground thirty metres below them.

"Amber! Slow down. We have two hours until sunrise."

"One of them will be spent finding that chunk of gold."

Ermelinda said nothing, but accelerated.

Amber was still in front of her. Eyes widening, Ermelinda watched as she went into a sudden, steep dive. In seconds, her board was hovering half a metre from the ground.

"Lin! Dive!" Amber called.

Ermelinda went in for a safer descent, slowly getting closer to the ground and braking beside Amber.

"Where is it?"

Ermelinda pointed to a pile of rocks, barely visible in the darkness.

Amber carried her board over, and started lifting the rocks. Ermelinda knelt and helped. They were grateful that the night was cold and refreshing.

After half an hour, Amber triumpantly lifted out a piece of gold as big as a clementine.

"I'll take it to the jewellers."

"Lin..."

"I know how much it's worth."

"Fine. Put it in your board. Let's go home."

Ermelinda slid her thumb along the one compartment that would open when touched. Placing the gold inside, she replaced the lid. The two climbed to the rooftop of the nearest building and took off.

They merged into the night.
