Chapter One
The house on the hill was broken down, untouched since the chief's passing, Astrid didn't feel right taking the house over. No, too many memories. They were too hard to even go near the house. She sat in the house she was raised in. Glancing out the window letting out a sigh.
Her eyes sat on the house. She often went into her own mind. Thinking of how things could be different. She didn't deserve to be chief. Hiccup had earned it. He worked so hard for it. Or maybe not, he had said he wasn't comfortable being chief like he wouldn't be good enough.
"Mum" a voice rang through the house. She was deep in her mind "mum" it rang again. She sat up, spinning around to see the blue eyes of her son staring at her with worry. " your thinking about it again?" He questioned softly. She sighed.
" doesn't matter," she spoke " you setting out on patrol?" She questioned. Something she missed doing, bit with all the chief duties it was now up to the new generation to take the role.
"Yeah, we are going to head east, first" he told her, her head shot up.
"East? Stay within the boundaries" she reminded. He gave her an annoyed look.
" I know! Why can't we go out further like the A team? You did" she looked at him.
" We didn't travel far from Berk at your age" she told him. "Besides the A Team have far more experience with their dragons and dealing with threats than your team." He frowned.
"You told us about travelling the ocean exploring new islands" he explained as " past the fog bank, I want to see what's out there." She stood up walking over to him not leaving eye contact tact.
" Yes we explored, we were the only riders at the time we stayed within the fog bank until we were eighteen, and we had permission" she explained to her son. He frowned. He dreamed of finding Dragons Edge and get the old outpost up and running. But it seemed his mother was always against it. She let out sigh. " when you older, you can"
Garth opened his mouth to speak. He was cut off by the door flinging open. " A Gustav is here" he bowed . Astrid rolled her eyes. He hadn't changed.
"What is it Gustav?" She questioned. His expression became more serious.
"There was a dragon destress signal" he spoke to her. She walked over to him, eyes glued to him . "From the Northeast direction of our patrol" he explained. " that's not the weird part" that got the young heirs attention.
"Weird part? Did you check on the distress signal?" Garth questioned.
" I sent my team ahead" Gustav responded turning his attention back to the chief "The signal fire was a Night Fury plasma"
"Are you sure?" She questioned, frowning her brows.
"I know what a plasma blast signal looks like. Sure it's been 20 years since the last time I saw one but still. Unless you know another type of dragon with plasma blast?"
"Alight Gustav," She headed to the door , whistling for her dragon who leaped out of her stable, giving a roar. The deadly Nadder was excited to fly with her rider. She could come and go as she pleased, but flying with her rider, Astrid since she came chief was rare now. Astrid was busy with the village and only on occasion was called for something, like an unknown ship in the borders or out of control dragons, stuff that needed a dragon.
She leaped onto the dragon, patting her " been a while, hey girl" the dragon gave a purr flapping her wings. The only thing that she was glad Hiccup had been frozen, seeing hiccup being unable to fly toothless who couldn't fly on his own. It was a benefit. The two couldn't suffer from not flying. Hiccup loved to be on the dragon in the sky. And toothless' disability made it impossible for him to fly on his own. At least Stormfly didn't need her to fly and she could come and go. She hated herself for even thinking of it.
"Mum! Can I come? I could round up my riders? If it's a dragon in distress and night fury. You could use the help?" She looked at him, thinking. He had a point night fury's are incredibly dangerous and intelligent. If it was in trouble . It's possible something worse was out there. She gave a nod to her son, who leaped onto his own Nadder and taking to the sky to gather his friends.
Gustav looked at her from Fanghook " are you sure you want him to come?" he questioned.
Astrid let out a sign. She honestly wasn't sure if she should let them come along. But how else were they going to prove themselves as dragon riders without giving them a chance.
They need to be given a chance, no matter the outcome. Maybe it was because she lost the one she loved? She still loved him, but never got the chance to tell him. She regretted not being able to tell him the way she felt. Did he feel the same way? Something she would never know. She never wanted to feel that heart break again. Nor did she want her son to experience that pain.
Stormfly raised her wings up as she took a running start before leaping in to the sky above. The purple monstrous nightmare gave a small growl before taking off into the sky to guild the way, the younger riders coming up behind them.
