Chapter 21
Charles sighed as he sat up on his bed. He turned and noticed the bed was empty until yesterday came racing back to him.
'I think I'll go somewhere and clear my mind too.' Charles thought as he stood up and headed to the shower. He came out feeling slightly better as he dried himself and put some hiking clothes on.
"Might need some protecting, just in case of Talon." He said lightly as he put on his gear. He left and headed to the hangar and noticed Hana working on her MEKA. Hearing the shuffling feet of someone, Hana glanced behind her to see Charles walking to a dropship.
"Morning Charlie, you're not having breakfast?" She asked, ripping him from his thoughts. He looked at her and smiled.
"Not hungry, I'm going out hiking. I'll be back soon." He informed her as he boarded the ship and set in coordinates. Hana watched the ship levitate and take off as she tossed her wrench on the ground.
"Stay safe dork." She said before heading to the mess hall. On the ship, Charles sat on the chair as he watched the clouds go by.
"Charlie? What are you doing?" The voice of Julie said over the comms. "I'm just going out for a few. I'll be back mom." He replied.
"Okay, just be safe. I love you." She said before comms went dark. "Athena." Charles said. "What is it Charlie?" The AI asked.
"Cloak this ship, I don't want them following us." He ordered. "Okay, but are you sure?" Athena hesitantly replied.
"I'm sure of it Athena, besides I can take care of myself. You've seen to that before." Charles said with a smile.
[Spoiler: If you have not watch Logan, do not read this part.]
"I can't argue with that, just be safe." Athena said as the dropship landed in a forested area. "May I ask, where we are?" Athena asked.
"North Dakota, just something I want to clarify. After sightings of new mutants, I decided to check it out. When I was still trying to stop the Rider from taking over me, when I had some control. I went to a string of coordinate, believe it or not, from a comic book I read. When I went to those coordinates, I discovered a place where mutants were free to do what they want. I was greeted by a teenage girl, very hostile, she had double metal claws from both of her fists." Charles replied.
"Metal claws? That reminds me of a once great mutant named 'Wolverine'." Athena said. "What do you mean of a 'once great mutant'?" Charles asked as he walked down the ramp.
"From the records, Wolverine, or James Howlett. Better known as Logan. He was sadly killed by a clone of him when he tried to save a group of man made mutant children from Transigen Inc." Athena informed him.
"Man made?" Charles asked as he trudged through the forest. "Since the rapid decline of mutants, Transigen decided to create more mutants. But not ones with free will, no, they were created into soldiers." Athena informed him. As Charles trudged through the forest, he emerged into a clearing with a lake. Grass covered the lake as the sun shone down onto the water. Charles walked over to the lake until a pile of rocks came into his line of sight.
"What's this?" He wondered as he walked over and noticed the wooden cross. "This is a grave." He realized as he cautiously stepped forward and knelt to see the wooden cross moved to resemble an 'X'.
"Logan." Charles said as he realized who the grave belonged to. "This grave has a fairly small amount of adamantium. Enough to cover a human skeleton." Athena confirmed. Charles sat down next to the grave as he stared at the 'X' and sighed.
"I've heard stories about you, read comics based on you. My only regret was not meeting you in person. From my time when the Rider was trying to possess me, I've seen the news and read up on mutants. I didn't believe you were a menace, you were people too. The only difference was that you had gifts that made you different to us, and now there are few of you left. I used to feel like an outcast when I had this demon. No one knew me or even cared. They were only afraid because I could kill them in an instant. Maybe that is why the people feared the mutants. You could have killed us and take over the world. But you didn't, because Charles Xavier saw that we could coexist on this planet. I only wish we could've made that come true before. I am sorry." Charles said before a twig snapped, causing the man to turn his head and see a small girl and boy standing a few feet from him. The girl popped out her metal claws as the boy levitated some rocks, preparing to throw them.
"No sé quién eres, pero no eres bienvenido." The girl said stalking towards him. "Wait Laura, he seems innocent." The boy said dropping the rocks and placing a hand on her wrist, making her sheathe her claws. The boy walked over and inspected Charles.
"You're one of those Overwatch agents, aren't you?" He asked. "Yes." Charles confirmed making the girl's scowl lighten to a slight smile.
"How do you know about Logan?" The boy asked. "Believe it or not, but from the comics they created, and researching some facts on the internet of him. I actually admired the man." Charles said looking to the lake.
"He was a great man, I was there when he died." The boy said with a frown. Charles glanced over to the girl as tears began to form.
"He was her father." The boy informed Charles. "I am sorry for your loss. I know the feeling." Charles said as a memory invaded his mind.
"So, are you a mutant Mr?" The boy asked. "Charles, and no sadly. Not a mutant. Just the host to a demon." Charles informed him.
"What kind of demon? And the name is Rictor." The boy asked. Charles stood and walked to the shadows. He turned as his skull erupted into Hellfire and his hands turned to fiery bone hands.
"You remind me of someone. Another that looked like you." Rictor said. "Really now?" Charles asked as he reverted back.
"Yeah, he had a blue motorcycle. Carried a shotgun as his way of killing people." Rictor explained.
"Ah, Johnny Blaze. The first Ghost Rider of the new age. The original Rider was a man named Carter Slade. Sadly, he died when Johnny and him went to a town to collect souls for the devil." Charles said.
"The Devil?" Laura asked. "Si, he does exist. But he's more of a pain rather than one to strike fear." Charles replied. 'I'm hurt." Lucifer said in his mind.
"And an eavesdropper." Charles grumbled. "Well, we came to leave flowers and return to our home. It was nice meeting an agent of Overwatch." Rictor said.
"I'm glad to know all mutants were not killed off. Be safe you two." Charles said standing up and dusting the dirt from his behind. Rictor and Laura waved good bye as the disappeared behind the brush.
"That was rather nice." Athena spoke. "Heh, you're right about that Athena." Charles replied as he walked through the forest until his dropship appeared in front of him. The flashing button for the comms flashed red.
"But now we have to deal with the parents." Charles said as he pressed the button. "Hello?" He asked lightly.
"Charlie, thank god, we were worried about you!" Ana said. "Hana didn't tell you what I was doing?" Charles asked.
"No, she didn't." Ana responded. "Well I was just out hiking. I'm on my way back." Charles said as the ship began to ascend and take off back to the Watchpoint.
"My condolensces goto Laura, to lose a father like that." Charles said as he held his head down. The ship slowed as it entered the hangar. Charles walked down the ramp to see Jennie, Hana, Julie, and David waiting for him.
"What did you do?" Julie asked. "Just went hiking of course. Nothing special." Charles said. "Okay, we just wanted to make sure nothing happened." David said before leaving. Julie and Hana followed along suit as Jennie and Charles went to the mess hall as Charles forgot how hungry he was. After getting some food, he and Jennie sat down as Charles began to eat.
"So how was your trip?" Jennie asked. "It was good, and I now know the Wolverine was real." Charles replied.
"You mean mutants are real?" Jennie asked with curiousity. "Yup, I met two of them when I visited Wolverine's grave." Charles said making Jennie gasp lightly.
"I'm sorry to hear that he passed away." Jennie said lowering her eyes. "Yeah, but it was good to confirm that he was real." Charles said finishing his food and placing his utensils in the sink as he began to clean them and place them on the strainer.
"So, anything new?" Charles asked. "No, just the same old, mission here and there. Jesse being a moron, but I still love him." Jennie informed him. Charles stopped moving and turned to his sister as a scowl formed on his face.
"Jesse?" He asked making Jennie freeze. "Oh, yeah about that. I forgot to tell you we're dating." Jennie said placing her hands behind her back and rocking on her heels. Charles growled before turning on his heel and marching towards McCree's room.
"Charlie, CHARLIE! STOP IT!" Jennie yelled running forward and grabbing his arm. She planted her heels on the floor as Charles dragged her. McCree exited his room and noticed Charles and Jennie.
"Jesse RUN!" She ordered him. Realizing what was going on with Charles, McCree did the logical thing and turned as he began to run down the hallway. David and Julie opened the door to see Jesse holding his hat and running down the hall with a pissed off fire skeleton running after him. Jennie stopped in front of them as she caught her breath.
"Jennie." Julie said. "I got it, relax mom." Jennie said before running after the two. Charles chased McCree into a corner as the skeleton stalked towards him.
"H-hey Charlie, c-cmon man, I d-didn't know she didn't tell you." He stuttered as the angry skeleton continued until he was face to face with him. Charles stood in front of McCree as he struggled to not laugh.
"Just promise me one thing, cowboy." He growled. "A-anythin' partner!" McCree replied. "Just keep her safe, I didn't in the past. Promise me that." He said changing back.
"I promise." The cowboy replied instantly. Charles stared at him before laughing. McCree stared at him with a confused look.
"I'm just kidding with ya McCree, I got no ill will towards you guys. But just promise me that." He said sincerely.
"I understand, on my life partner." McCree said shaking his hand. "Now that we got that out of the way, that was hilarious. I caused you to piss yourself!" Charles said falling to the floor, holding his stomach as he laughed. McCree sighed and felt his legs buckle as he fell to the floor.
"I hate you Charlie." McCree grumbled. "Love ya too haha!" Charles said.
