Chapter 27

The Rider woke up and stretched as he began his daily routine. He would wake up, shower, dress then be out the door towards the mess hall. He had to do this frequently due to the agents, mostly Charles's mother, telling him to keep the body healthy if he is going to share it.

"Good morning Rider." Lena said nodding curtly. The Rider nodded in greetings as he grabbed a tray of food and sat by himself.

"How can you humans eat this?" He wondered looking at the eggs. Lena sat next to him as Lucio and Hana followed close behind.

"Morning Charlie!" Hana said with a grin. The Rider stared at her before glancing at Lena. Lena nodded for him to say hello.

"Good morning, Hana." The Rider replied. Hana raised an eyebrow. "Charlie, y ou okay? You don't sound like it." Hana said staring into his eyes.

"Anyways, how was last night stream Hana?" Lena interjected. "Oh it was good. Got a good couple donations but other than that, it was smooth sailing." She replied with a grin.

"Yeah, by smooth sailing, she means getting her butt kicked. A lot." Lucio chimed in with a grin. Fareeha and Ana sat with them as they ate their meals. The Rider glanced at Fareeha, only for the woman to avoid his gaze.

"I'll be going now." He said standing up and walking away. "What's wrong with him?" Hana asked. "He's just going through somethings, why don't you go visit Angela. I'm sure she'll enjoy your company." Lena suggested as she took care of her and the Rider's food. She blinked after the demon before sneaking up behind a pillar to see him sitting on the cliff, overlooking the ocean and sun rising on the horizon.

"He looks peaceful." Aaron said, making her squeak. "Aaron! You dolt!" She hissed at him, causing a grin on the weaponsmith's face.

"So, why are you stalking Charles?" He asked. "You know why, what happened yesterday you prick." She replied. He looked at her before yesterday's battle came flooding back. Lena turned to receive a face full of leather.

"What are you doing?" The Rider asked, causing her too back up into Aaron. "N-nothin' luv, just getting a look at the sunrise. Man, isn't that beautiful?" Lena asked shakily. The Rider stared at her through Charles's face.

"If you still have doubts, I understand. But I tried to talk to him." The Rider reported. "What do you mean?" Aaron asked.

"He's become a shut in and won't talk to me. He still feels responsible for what happened to the doctor." "It's not his fault though." Aaron retorted.

"Regardless, he needs help. The only one that has this capacity is Johnny Blaze." The Rider growled.

"I take it you and him are still on bad terms." Lena said. "I'll get over them. For now, Charles's safety is my concern." The Rider replied as he brushed past the two. The Rider continued down the hallway as the agents greeted him. He continued down the path until appearing in the front gate. He reached into his pocket and grabbed Charles's phone. He opened it and scrolled through the contacts until stopping at Johnny's. As he exhaled, he pressed the call button and raised it to his ear. The rings continued until a gruff man answered.

"Hello?" He asked. "Jonathan Blaze." The Rider replied. "Oh, it's you. What do you want?" Johnny asked.

"I need your help. Where can we meet?" The Rider asked.

~Talon HQ~

"Agent Acid, I hope your mission was a success. Wait, don't answer that." Widowmaker said pulling up an image of the destroyed warehouse. Acid glared at the ground as he waited for what she was going to say next.

"We are disappointed that you were not able to save the serum, but no matter. We've duplicated the serum and have 12 new test subjects. They may have taken down multiple warehouses housing this liquid, but we have our army. Now, get some rest. You'll need it." Widowmaker said walking out of the room.

"Yes, Ma'am." Acid said through gritted teeth. He hated the assassin and mercenary that roamed the HQ. He was always treated as a freak in Talon. On top of that, two of his brothers were killed by a supernatural demon. How was he supposed to keep up with that? Overwatch seemed to be getting more stronger by the day. Acid walked out of the room and walked to his assigned quarters. It was conviently labeled 'Test subjects'. Next to the sign, someone taped a paper with the words, 'Freaks' 'Disgusting' 'Trash'. He growled and ripped it off the wall as it melted in his hands. He opened his door to reveal a standard bed with a pillow and blanket. A desk, chair, and computer and a bathroom with the essentials.

"I was given powers to be someone more than what I was, yet I get treated like a freak." Acid growled. A knock was heard on the door.

"Come in." He said. "Hey, Rick." A female voice said, making him turn to see a blonde haired girl with a blue shirt and brown pants. She had on black boots as her hair was tied in a ponytail.

"Hey Claire." He replied with a smile. She entered the room and closed it as she walked over with a pen and clipboard.

"The usual?" He asked twirling in his chair. "Yes sir." She replied sitting across from him. "How has your mood been?" "Angry, frustration, hate." He replied. She scribbled the answers on her clipboard before nodding for him to continue.

"I guess you could say the stem of my anger is how we are treated like 3rd world citizens. Insulting us and putting us down. The worst person is Widowmaker. All high and mighty because she's Talon's top assassin. If I had my way, I'd melt her putrid face myself." Rick growled.

"Is there anything we can do to alleviate your frustration?" Claire asked. "If I were to suggest something, it's not like the higher ups would even care. To them, we're just expendable soldiers. Just like the grunts they use. I would love it if they would just die, then I would be fine." Rick said. Claire wrote down more on her clipboard before putting the pen away.

"Thank you, I'll be sure to bring your complaints to the higher ups, please, get some rest." Claire said with a smile. He watched as she exited his room and closed the door.

"Are we just seen as expendable soldier?" He wondered aloud as he flopped onto his bed.

~The Rider~

The Rider stood by the train station as he waited for Johnny. 'He's late.' The Rider thought. Some women walked past him as they shot winks at him. The Rider sighed before seeing the familiar man.

"Blaze." The RIder greeted. "Let's get to business on why you called me here. So what is it you need Charlie?" Johnny asked.

"Charles is, not here at the moment. Something happened to him that requires your help. Much to my disdain." The Rider informed him as they walked to a motel. Entering the room, Johnny watched as the ride sat on the bed.

"Tell me what happened?" He asked crossing his arms. "It was supposed to be a regular fight against Talon, Project Avatar was back in business. Charles, Angela, and the Unit were to attack a heavily fortified warehouse that protected the liquid. We had met three of their recent creations. Three men able to control Air, Earth, and Acid. Air managed to remove her from play, before making Charles snap. I walked into his psyche and realized that with that event, it triggered the same ones from the highway. Someone as young as he was, shouldn't have been introduced to that. For now, he just needs someone to help him." The Rider said looking at him.

"I see." Johnny said finally. He stood up and sat next to the Rider before placing a hand on his shoulder.

"Well, let's talk to him." He replied. The Rider nodded before closing his eyes.

~Charles's Psyche~

The Rider looked around before seeing Johnny next to him. "This way." The Rider said walking to the door. Opening it, the Rider saw the door to Charles's mind opened. But he could hear the cries. Gritting his teeth, the Rider and Johnny stepped into his mind before seeing the small outline of Charles in the corner. His mind had tables thrown about, pictures destroyed, furniture ripped and torn. A picture of a smiling Angela laid in front of him, covered in blood.

"I couldn't save her." They could hear him said faintly. Johnny stepped in before the Rider stopped him.

"I'll talk to him first." He said walking forward carefully. Charles heard the footsteps before looking up to see the Rider looking at him. He moved up as the Rider sat down next to him and wrapped an arm around him. Charles rested his head on the Rider's broad shoulder.

"I'm here Charlie, we're in this together no matter what." The Rider said. Charles sniffled before sighing.

"Thank you, for being there." Charles said wiping his tears. The Rider nodded before clearing his throat.

"There is someone here to speak with you." He said turning to Johnny. "Hey kid." He said, causing Charles to look up and see him.

"J-Johnny!?" Charles said in surprise. Johnny walked over to him and sat in front of the two. "Kid, you alright? Out there, you're causing quite a scare for some of us." Johnny asked. Charles sat up and looked to the ground.

"I couldn't save her." He repeated. "Save who?" Johnny asked. "I couldn't save Angela, just like I almost couldn't save Jennie. I'm a failure." Charles said before feeling a hand clap his shoulder.

"Enough with this nonsense, you did save her Charles. Angela is safe and sound." Johnny said. Charles's eyes drifted to his memories as he saw the unconscious body of Angela in his arms, the feeling of the blood trickling down his fingers. He closed his eyes and grabbed his legs as tears began to stream down his face. Johnny sighed before moving forward and grabbing his shoulders.

"Enough of this, snap out of it Charlie, your family needs you. Angela needs you. You need to stop all this moping around. Your mother, your father, your sisters, your brothers, and your lover need you now. We need you." Johnny said. Charles looked into his eyes as many thoughts went through his mind. He glanced at the Rider as the skeleton nodded. He closed his eyes as the room surrounding them began to fix itself. Once he opened his eyes, the room was back to normal, no destroyed furniture, no bloodied picture.

"There ya go kiddo." Johnny said with a smile. Charles saw the room fixed and grinned happily. "Your family needs you." The Rider said. Charles stood as he had a determined smile. Before their eyes, he began to shimmer before he disappeared.

"Well, looks like my time here is done with." Johnny said standing up. "Thank you, Johnny. I guess you aren't so bad after all." The Rider said as he stood up and left for his room. He turned to see Johnny disappear as he nodded goodbye.

~Charles~

Charles opened his eyes as the motel came to view. He looked over at Johnny as he stood and stretched.

"Man, I forgot how tiresome it gets going into people's minds." He said before glancing at Charles.

"You with me Charlie?" He asked. Charles stood up and smiled. "Yeah Johnny. I'm here." He answered. Johnny walked over and patted his shoulder.

"Go on kid, she's waiting for you." Johnny said walking out the motel room, leaving the door opened. Charles walked outside and looked at the blue sky.

'She is waiting for you, go to her.' The Rider said. Charles breathed in the air as he began to run to the airport.

~Watchpoint Gibraltar~

After landing in the Strait of Gibraltar, Charles began to run towards the base. People watched as he ran by, some waved and some greeted him. He grinned before stopping in front of the gate entrance of the base. Warning signs hung from the fences. He climbed over them and walked to the entrance. A ray of light scanned his body as the voice of Athena came to life.

"Agent Charles 'Ghost' Williams, welcome back Rider." She said. "Hey Athena." Charles replied as he entered the base. Lena was the first to welcome him.

"Hey bonehead, how was Johnny? You didn't kill him did you?" She asked. "No Auntie, he didn't. They both helped me." Charles replied, causing her to stop and stare at him.

"C-Charlie?" She asked as a single tear fell down her face. He grinned and nodded before feeling her arms wrapped around his shoulders.

"Oh my handsome nephew!" She cried, squeezing him. "C-can't breathe!" He squeaked out, causing her tense up.

"Oh, I'm sorry luv, it's just that I missed your smile." She said. Charles glanced over to see Aaron walk over.

"Hey bonehead." He said. "Hey, I'm keeping that double barreled pistol." Charles replied. Aaron looked at him and walked over as he inspected him.

"You feelin' alright?" He asked. "Yes Aaron, I'm fine. Johnny and the Rider helped me." He replied.

"Glad you're back Charlie, it was getting a little weird with the Rider in control." Aaron said. "Yeah I guess it was. Besides, someone has to watch over Aunt Lena. She tends to get herself in trouble." Charles retorted. Lena yelped before berating him.

"Aww jeez, I was just kidding Aunt Lena!" Charles said laughing. "Grrr, I'm starting to miss the Rider more now." Lena said before leaving. Aaron walked after her as Charles giggled. He sighed and began to walk to the infirmary. Ana and Lucio talked before seeing Charles walk towards them.

"Good afternoon Rider. Angela is doing fine." Ana reported. "Really? Is she awake?" Charles asked.

"Yes she is, Zenyatta and Jack are with her right now." Ana reported. "Thanks Grandma." Charles said walking to the door.

"Grandma?" Lucio asked looking at her. Charles knocked on the door before hearing a voice. He walked in to see Zenyatta and Jack looking at him.

"Afternoon Rider." Jack said. Zenyatta floated over and patted his shoulder before exiting. "Afternoon Pops." Charles replied. Jack stared at him as Charles patted his shoulder.

"I've got it from here, go rest." Charles said. Jack smiled and left for his room. Once the rom was empty and the door was closed, Charles sat on Angela's bed as the medic stared at him.

"C-Charlie?" She asked lifting a hand hesitantly to his cheek. He grasped her hand and smiled. "Hey Angel dork." He said lightly. She gasped lightly before grabbing him into a hug.

"Ack! Angela!" Charles whined as she cried into his shoulder. He smiled as he wrapped his arms around her and held her.

"Isn't this a turn of events, I should be the one crying that you're okay. But if it's any consolation, I missed you. After that incident, I thought I lost you forever." Charles said as tears fell down his face.

"Oh liebes, you're too important to me. I promise to stay safe." Angela said wiping her tears away.

"We're in this together. That's a promise." Charles said holding her close. 'That's a promise.'
