Chapter 36
Charles awoke to see Angela getting ready. "Rise and shine Commander." She said with a smile. The blonde man stood up groggily as he yawned and stretched. He made his way to the shower and cleaned himself. Exiting the bath, he placed on clean clothes and his gear. He walked to the mess hall to see the agents and personnel talking and eating together. Everyone grew silent as Angela and Charles entered.
"Good morning Commander." Ana said walking up to him. "Morning Ana, and please, it's Charlie. Its weird being called 'Commander'." He said. Lena blinked over to him and nudged his shoulder.
"Big day, 'Commander'." She said with a grin. "Yes it will be." He said as he grabbed his food and sat with Ana and Winston. Angela sat next to him as he ate.
"So, Winston, any luck on a new base for us?" He asked. "No sadly, but I insist we use Ecopoint Antarctica as a forward base." He said.
"I do too my furry friend, but Mei wouldn't like it." Angela said. "I know, she can stay here and help us whenever we need it." Winston suggested.
"I don't know big guy, it's her decision. I won't force our decision on her." Charles said. As the four finished eating, they left for the command center. Lawson and Barnes stood near a map as they made their way in.
"Commander." The two said. "Commander Lawson, Captain Barnes." Charles replied. "So, any new plans on that base?" Lawson asked.
"We plan on using Ecopoint Antarctica, but we worry about our ecologist." Charles said. "Mei? I heard about the incident. To be frozen for that long." Barnes said.
"Yes, about Mei, we are deciding on having her stay here. If that's okay with you?" Ana asked. "It's fine by me." Lawson replied. Winston smiled as he lumbered off to find her.
"Alright, we'll be departing soon. But would you be will to send resources there? Food, Water?" Charles asked.
"We'll see what we can do. You just worry on how to accommodate your troops. Leading isn't exactly an easy job, isn't it?" Lawson asked with a smile. Charles sighed as he sat down and placed his head on the table.
"No, it really isn't. God, how do you do it?" He asked. Lawson laughed as he patted his shoulder.
"It just takes practice and motivation among your troops. You'll get it soon." The Commander said.
"You make it sound easy." Charles grumbled as the door opened. Mei and Winston appeared. "Ah, Mei, I'm glad you could make it." Charles said.
"Good morning Char-I mean Commander." She said. "You're fine Mei, it's still me." Charles said. "Oh, okay." She said giggling.
"Listen, Lawson wants us to leave and I would love to fulfil that wish, but the only base Winston said we could use is the Ecopoint." Charles said. Mei stared at him before backing up.
"Hold on, now, we were talking and have decided that we want you here. I know about your backstory and what happened, I don't want to force you to a place you don't want to goto." Charles informed her. Mei stared at Ana, Angela, Winston, and Lawson. The four nodded as Lawson walked forward.
"I'd like to welcome you to the team, if you decide that is what you want." Lawson said holding his hand out.
"Will I still be apart of Overwatch?" She asked. "Of course you will. If you do decide to be here, you can call us anytime." Angela said. Mei looked at Lawson and smiled as she shook his hand.
"Welcome aboard, Miss Ling-Zhou." He said. Mei looked at Charles as he grinned and nodded. 'See, being a leader isn't hard, and you were whining about that.' The Rider teased. 'Oh, so you got jokes now?' Charles replied as the hissing of laughter filled his head.
Charles nodded as he left for the rec room to see the agents all ready with their gear. "Alright, so, who's ready for cold weather?" He asked.
"What do you mean?" Lucio asked. "We'll be using the Ecopoint as a staging base against Talon." Charles replied.
"Really? A cold, covered with snow, base?" Hana asked. "Well, we are considered disbanded, and if we try to appeal to the UN, most likely they would arrest us for even getting together." Angela said.
"What about Talon? Why don't the UN try to arrest them?" Genji asked. The agents agreed as Charles sighed.
"I don't know, honestly, I don't know. The world sees Overwatch as above the law, answering to no one. That's not what we are, we are a beacon of hope. We are the light in the dark, we are shepherds that care for sheep, okay not the best metaphor but you get the idea." Charles said.
"Why don't you try to appeal to the UN?" A voice asked. Charles turned as Atticus walked in. "Grief." "Commander. Now then, why don't you try to appeal to the United Nations that the world needs Overwatch again?" He asked again.
"I can try, but there is no guarantee that they'll appeal to me. I mean, Jack is dead." Charles said.
"Well, that's not going to stop the media from speaking about it." Atticus said turning on the television. It showed the covering of the raid on the Watchpoint Gibraltar.
"Alright, I can try." Charles said. "I'll help you." Atticus said as the two left. "You really think we have a chance?" Ana asked.
"We must pray and hope." Angela replied.
~United Nations~
Charles gulped audibly as him and Atticus walked through the halls of the legendary building. "I can't believe this place has survived this long. 2 world wars and an Omnic Crisis? So much history is here." Atticus said. He glanced at Charles to see him sweating profusely.
"Calm down kid." He said placing his hands on Charles's shoulders. "Huh? Yeah, sorry. Just nervous that's all." Charles replied.
"You're lucky I pulled some strings for you to be here. Now, go knock em dead." He said pushing him towards the podium.
"And now, an alleged member of the outlawed 'Overwatch' group." The man said. The room was quiet as Charles walked to the podium and cleared his throat.
"Good afternoon, delegates of various countries. My name is Charles Williams. You may know me from the news outlets as the 'Fire Skeleton'." He said. A few gasps were heard. He cleared his throat as he continued.
"I am here as the new Commander of Overwatch, the past Commander, John 'Jack' Morrison was the original. He was the vigilante known as 'Soldier 76'. I say was, because he died in the raid on our decommissioned base." Charles said.
"I know Overwatch, they are my family. I was there as a kid. My parents were agents. I ended up following in their footsteps. I ask you, no, I beg you. Please, reinstate Overwatch, Talon is the real enemy here. They are the ones that must answer to justice." Charles said.
"19-20 some odd years ago, I was but a child in a foster home with my sister. We were two little peas in a pod. Our foster parent had hosted a party for the former Overwatch agents for saving our town from the Omnic Crisis so many years ago. There, I was able to learn of our history, our parents were Overwatch agents. After some careful thought, the agents had adopted us, making them our family. That day, I was given the power of the Rider." Charles said as he held his hand out, skin melting as bone appeared, catching fire. Some delegates murmured to themselves before Charles continued.
"Talon, destroyed my family. They stole my parents and reconditioned them to killing machines that your special squad, the Unit, faced. I was horrified that my parents were forced to be these things. Not knowing their past lives due to Talon's control. They did the exact same thing to Mrs. LaCroix, the wife of Gerard. Talon, the twisted fuckers, are the real enemies here. Overwatch was the beacon of hope, the frontline warriors to defend democracy, defend countries, defend the world from threats. John Morrison, my stepfather, gave his life to defend his teammates from Talon. Please, let us honor his memory by defeating Talon and their elemental warriors." Charles pleaded. After a few moments of silence, a few delegates began clapping, more soon joined in as the entire room joined in the applaud.
"Now was that hard?" Atticus asked. Charles looked at him and smiled. The two left as they wandered the halls, a man walked up to them.
"Excuse me, I believe we haven't met." The man said. Charles shook his hand as the man smiled.
"I am Ted Kent, an executive of the UN. I just want to say your case has swayed the delegates, right now they are deciding on reinstating Overwatch. I just want to apologize." Kent said.
"For what?" "For doubting your parents when I should have had more faith in them." Ted said. "You were the executive that was the catalyst in the investigation and soon shutdown of Overwatch." Charles said.
"Aye, that's me. Now that I look on it, I was a fool. I am also sorry for what happened to Gerard." Ted said before Charles placed a hand on his shoulder.
"It's in the past, I'm sure what you thought was right. Trust me, I thought I was right to accept the power of the Rider, now I just have an annoying skeleton talking to me in my head." Charles said. He felt a searing pain in his skull as the Rider growled.
"A fussy Rider." Charles grumbled as he rubbed his head. "Well, they are voting right now, we should know soon." Ted said. After a few minutes, Charles walked back to the room as everyone sat down.
"The votes are in." The man in the podium said. Charles and Atticus crossed their fingers as Angela prayed in front of the TV.
"The ayes have it! Overwatch will be reinstated and all other Watchpoints, Ecopoints, and past members will be officially recalled." He said. Charles and Atticus looked at each other as they cheered. Overwatch is back.
A/N: Well, Overwatch is back. So, hopefully in the coming chapters it would be better. I'm sorry, it's 1 at night and I had to hurry this up. I'm sorry if it is rushed but my ass is tired. Anyways, I do hope you guys enjoyed it. Tata for now!
