Four

~💎  In the end, we only regret the chances we didn't take 💎~

The doctor walked out of the room.  I looked up and wiped more tears.

"Is she okay?" I asked immediately.

The doctor nodded, but she seemed hesitant. Did that mean she was sort of okay? "She is conscious again."

"Thank the lord! Can I go see her?" I asked impatiently.

"Um, but there's one problem..." What now? "She has Amnesia." I just stared blankly at her for answers. I had no clue was that word meant, and I'm not sure my dad did either. "Amnesia is when the brain is unable to remember things correctly after the person's head has been hit. See, there are two types of Amnesia. There is Anterograde Amnesia, where the person had difficulties making new memories once they are conscious again. This is the more common of the two, but your friend... is Heaven the name? She had Retrograde Amnesia, in which all of her pre-existant memories are lost due to the fact that she has this type of Amnesia," the doctor explained.

I couldn't believe my ears. "So, you mean she can't remember anything before the accident?" I asked, starting to really tear up again.

"Right. I'm sorry, sweetie, but basically, her brain can't remember anything prior to when she had hit her head. She is really confused right now, and we have a few nurses in there with her. She'll be okay, though."

I looked over at her parents. They had pretty much lost it. So had I. So had my parents. "You have to let me go in there," I told Dr. Whitney. "I need to talk to her."

"I'm sorry, but you have to give it time. I can let the young girl's parents in so that she can meet them again, but unfortunately, you have to wait a while before I can allow you to make any sort of communication with her. It depends on how she's handling it all,  but probably not until at least a month... probably more."

"WHAT?!? No, you have it all wrong, Mrs. Dotcor lady. Heaven is my best friend. Ever. I can help her, and I have to see her now. Please," I shouted. There was just no way I could avoid talking to Heaven for that long. We have never been apart that long. Not even when we were babies! This couldn't happen. I wouldn't let it happen.

My mom put her hand on my shoulder. "You need to calm down. Heaven is a very strong girl, Oakly. I'm sure it won't take her very long to restart, and as soon as she does you can talk to her again."

I wiped more tears. "But... but things will never be normal again. What if we never become the friends we were before? Ever?" I asked, shaking.

"I'm not saying you'll pick up exactly where you've left off," my dad reasoned. "But think about this: You two have been best friends from the start. What difference will it be now? It'll take some time, but things will be close to normal soon. Promise." My mom nodded, agreeing.

My parents and I had to leave to get a head start on packing so Heaven and I wouldn't see each other too much and she wouldn't assume we must know each other well. Though we drove in the same car, I think Heaven was too confused and worried to try and talk to me.

She asked question after question, and her poor parents were worn out. Where do we live? Why is my name Heaven? What school do I go to? How old did you say I was? Do I have a boyfriend? Do we have any pets? And, last but not least... Do I have friends? At that point, I wanted to yell at her, tell her that of course she has friends, and I was her best one.

Then, she finally noticed me.  "Wait... who's that? Do I have a sister? She doesn't look like my sister. Is she... my friend? I do have friends?" Silence. Dead, awkward silence.

Heaven's mom turned on the radio. Heaved danced. I smiled. She was acting so... Heaven. It made me happy. "I feel so dumb right now... but what year is it? This is good music."

"Oh, don't be, sweetheart. This is 2017," her dad answered.

"Hmmm. Okay. I like 2017." Then she started to cry again. "You guys all seem so important in my life and I... I can't even remember you."

Her parents comforted her. We rode home in more silence.

Random fact about me #4: I saw Queen Meghan in concert the summer before last.
