32 - Die
The trees and bushes turn into one giant blur as I race through the woods. I knew I didn't have much time. Raven tried to sneak out of camp on her own with the bomb. After Miller told me he saw her leave, he handed the extra gun over to me and told me to go be the good leader that I was.
Miller and I have grown closer this past week. He apologized for everything he did to keep me from the Grounder, aka Lincoln. He was the only one who apologized. Of course, I didn't apologize for punching him because he understood why I did it.
There was no one to hold me back from going after Raven. I left camp without being seen by my brother. I didn't want anyone to worry about me. Bellamy was in the dropship because of the virus, so he wouldn't even know I left by the time I get back.
I couldn't understand why he never wanted me to use a gun. Why didn't he trust me? The only time he saw me with a gun was when I shot Dax. The memory plagues my mind in my dreams. I didn't want to kill him, but I know that if I hadn't, none of us would be alive right now.
My legs carry me through the woods, too far behind Raven to yell out her name. If I shout, I'm afraid Grounders might here and our plan will be ruined. Raven should have at least told someone what she planned on doing. She should have never gone by herself.
The sun has already risen in the sky. We were running short on time. When I left camp, it was still dark out. The Grounders attack at first light. I push myself to run faster, mentally hoping that I catch up with Raven in time.
I abruptly skid to a stop when I see a break through the trees and catch sight of Raven on the bridge down below. My head snaps up at the sound of war drums in the distance. Oh no. The Grounders are coming.
I peer through the scope of my gun, watching as Raven attempts to walk away from the bomb, only to collapse on the bridge. The closer I look, the more I realize she's been affected by the virus. I swear under my breath. Before I can run down the hill to save Raven, I hear Finn's voice and see him race across the bridge to her. When the hell did he get here?
I jog down the hill a little bit to get a better shot at the bomb on the bridge. I'm just out of range of hitting the white 'x' marked on it.
"Shoot, Jasper! Shoot! Shoot!" Finn yells once they are off of the bridge.
Jasper? He's here?
I scan the area of the woods, searching for my brother. My eyes fall upon the back of Jasper's head not too far away. He presses down on his trigger, missing the first shot. "Come on, Jasper." I whisper to myself. I won't fire unless I have to.
Bursts of flames through the trees on the other side of the bridge capture my attention. I lift my rifle up, peering through the scope. There's several Grounders on the other side, some holding torches in their hands. We're running out of time.
The Grounders halt their movements at the sound of gunshots. They freeze on the other side, quietly waiting to see what happens next. They don't know about this bomb. Another gunshot fires through the air, missing the target again.
Jasper presses down on the trigger, earning a clicking noise in response. "Oh, damn it. Damn it."
He ran out of bullets. I sprint down the hill toward the bridge. Now, it's all up to me to do this. I know I can make the shot. I just have to get a little closer. I dart past Jasper and Monty, who seems to have just appeared with another rifle.
"Wren?" Jasper gasps in surprise.
I stop running and position the gun on my shoulder, getting ready to take the shot. Right before I can hold down the trigger, my left foot slips out from underneath me and I slip down the hill that leads right to the side of the bridge.
"Wren!" Jasper calls out, when he sees me falling.
I reach out to grab anything I can to stop myself from reaching the bottom. My other foot slips and I land on my butt. I quietly groan, not wanting to draw attention to myself. The Grounders are hesitantly making their way across the bridge. I manage to catch myself enough and aim for the bomb again.
Something drips onto my hand, which broke my eye contact with the bomb for a split second. Dark red blood splatters onto the back of my hand. I use the same hand to wipe underneath my nose, grimacing at the blood that coats my skin.
The virus.
I shake my head and get ready to make the shot anyways. A feeling of exhaustion sweeps through my body. I rest the bottom of the gun on my knees and press down on the trigger once I have perfect aim.
The bomb explodes upon impact. I shrink back on the ground, covering my head with my arms as the explosion goes off. Parts of the bridge flies through the air, along with a large cloud of black smoke. The Grounders that were on the bridge shout out in pain and surprise. There had to be over thirty Grounders on the bridge when the explosion happened.
Suddenly weak, I push myself up from the ground, wanting to meet up with my brother and get back to camp before the Grounders come back for revenge. We've earned ourselves, perhaps, a couple of hours. I reach the top of the hill, not too far from my own brother.
Blood oozes out of my nose, splattering onto my own clothes and the dead leaves on the ground. Everything around me begins to spin. Being able to stand on my own feet becomes harder than it should be.
"J-Jasper...?" I whisper into the air around me.
My hand reaches out to grab onto anything that will keep me from falling over. My legs keep shaking beneath me. I lift my head up, frowning when I see Jasper running toward me with an alarmed expression on his face. I blink once and two Jasper's appear ahead of me.
"Jasper..." I mumble his name before I feel my legs give out underneath me and I start to fall to the ground, unconscious by the time Jasper catches me in his arms.
X
My head rolls around on Jasper's arm as he carries me through the woods back to camp. I've been falling in and out of consciousness the whole way back. I don't remember what happened after I collapsed after blowing up the bridge. My mind is too foggy for anything.
There's this feeling in my body, like a hundred pounds of concrete was injected into my body and hardened, making it impossible for me to move in any way.
"There! It's them!" Harper's voice carries through the trees. "Open the gate!"
I try to open my eyes, except they feel too heavy.
"Someone get Clarke!" Jasper shouts. His voice is thick, most likely with tears. He's scared the virus will take me away from him, that it will kill me like it did to the others.
There's a mix of people cheering for us taking down the bridge and some curiously wondering what happened to me. I want to open my eyes and tell everyone that I'm okay, but the virus is preventing me from doing so. I manage to open my eyes a little bit, just enough to catch a glimpse of Bellamy and Clarke rushing over to us.
Both of them looked normal again. The virus out of their systems. It would seem that we have switched roles.
Bellamy has a fearful look in his eyes, one that only comes out when he's worried about someone he cares about, which is usually Octavia, except this time, it's me. As soon as his dark eyes landed on me in Jasper's arms, he grew scared, just like Jasper had.
This was different, though. Jasper is scared because he's my brother. After our whole lives apart, we've finally reunited with each other on earth. To be taken away from him would be painful and a nightmare.
Bellamy is scared because he's grown to care for me in a way that I never would have expected him to, in a way that no one thought he had the ability to do. Perhaps, it's the virus affecting me or that I'm finally accepting the fact that Bellamy actually cares for me, when I've been trying so hard to ignore it.
"What the hell happened?" Bellamy demands. His eyes scan over me, lingering on the blood stains on my shirt and hand. He looks right over my face, assuming I'm unconscious.
"She took the shot and then collapsed." Jasper explains to them.
Clarke glances at the blood under my nose. "We need to get her inside."
Bellamy automatically holds his hands out to take me from my brother's hold. Instead, Jasper responds by holding me closer to his chest.
Clarke sets a hand on Jasper's shoulder. "It's okay. I'll watch over her." She looks at the large crowd that formed around us. "We can't risk her spreading it to anyone else. We've already had it."
"But I carried her all the way back." Jasper argues, not wanting to let me go. "If I'm infected then I should stay with her."
"If you were going to get the virus, you would have gotten it by now." Clarke tells him. "But we don't want to put you in the dropship with all of those germs and risk you getting sick somehow. It's safer for you to stay out here. Think of how upset Wren would be if she was the reason to get you sick."
"Jasper," Bellamy takes a closer step. One hand slides underneath my shoulders. "I won't let her out of my sight, okay? I won't let anything happen to her. I promise."
"I'm holding you to that, Blake." Jasper says with a small edge to his voice. Why did he say Bellamy's last name? He never calls him that.
A small groan floats off of my lips. Jasper sighs and gently transfers me into Bellamy's arms. My head rolls until it falls again Bellamy's neck. He says something to my brother that I can't hear and feel myself slip back into a black abyss.
Two hands roll my body onto my side as I cough up a mouthful of blood on the floor. The blood spews across the floor of the dropship next. The hands move from my side to gather my dark hair out of the way. From puking so hard, my eyes fill with tears and I collapse against the makeshift pad I'm laying on.
"Here." Octavia's face comes into my view with a damp cloth in hand. She gently wipes the blood off of my lips and chin.
My eyes flicker around where I'm laying, surprised to find myself in the dropship. The last thing I remember is just getting back to camp. Have I been unconscious this whole time? I woke up to cough up blood.
The hands in my air are still wrapped around the strands, which means they aren't Octavia's. I tilt my head back until I see Bellamy's head hovering not too far from mine. His fingers are intertwined through my hair.
"B-Bellamy?" I croak.
I remember him promising my brother that he wouldn't let me out of his sight, but I didn't think he would actually stick around. He smiles down at me.
Octavia looks between the two of us with a knowing look. "I'm going to go get you some water. Clarke said to make sure you stay hydrated." She pushes off of the ground and walks away from us.
"You stayed?" I peer up at him, confused.
His hands withdraw from my hands as I try to push myself up into a sitting position instead of laying down. Bellamy helps assist me to lean against the wall. I slowly exhale, feeling as if my head is spinning.
Bellamy remains silent.
The tickle in my throat begins again and I cough out of instinct, blood flies out of my month, coating my hand when I try to cover it. Bellamy reacts quickly by moving my body to the side, like Clarke has told him to do. My gag reflex kicks in, resulting in me coughing up even more blood and puking.
"You're okay." Bellamy gathers my hair out of my face. "It only lasts for a few hours. You're nearly halfway through."
I slump against the ground, breathing heavily. There's tears streaming down my face and blood sticking to my chin. Bellamy grabs the cloth Octavia was using before to wipe the blood from my face.
Unable to control myself, I sob against the ground, terrified of this virus killing me. That's what this virus does, it thins out the battlefield. Bellamy gently rolls me back over until I'm facing him.
"Bellamy, I'm scared..." Fear is laced in my voice.
There's a chance that I'll die from the virus. I didn't like to show weakness in front of the rest of the camp, but I trusted him. He's already seen me cry before.
"I-I don't want to die..." My chin quivers as I speak.
"Hey, hey," Bellamy gently tilts my head up to look into his eyes. "I'm not going to let you die, okay? You're going to be okay. I'm not going to let anything happen to you."
"Can I ask you a question?" I whisper, feeling myself growing tired again.
"Of course, Princess." Bellamy says in a soft voice. The scared look in his eyes is still present, except he's trying to hide me from seeing it.
I tuck my arm under my head to cushion it on the ground. "Why don't you trust me?" I sniffle. A shiver runs through my spine and I reach for a nearby blanket.
Bellamy helps me out and drapes the blanket over my body. "I do trust you."
I weakly shake my head. "Not with a gun."
He sighs, understanding what I am referring to. Bellamy slides down against the wall, closer to where I am laying. "I saw how you reacted after you killed Dax and how much you hated yourself for it." Our eyes lock onto each other. "I don't want you to hate the person you become down here because of the choices you have to make in order to stay alive."
The whole reason he's refused to allow me to have a gun was to protect me. Maybe Bellamy cared for me a lot more than I thought he did.
I gaze at him with heavy eyes, feeling myself struggling to stay awake. "There's- There's something I realized before I blew up the bridge. The people that we were on the Ark aren't the same people that we are today." I cough slightly and hold up a finger in the air.
The damp cloth wipes across my forehead, gently. I take a breath, silently wishing that my body doesn't give in to the virus and kill me. Right now, every thing in my body feels as if it is giving up on me. The struggle to keep my eyes open and finish what I wanted to say to Bellamy was nearly impossible.
I briefly shut my eyes before continuing, "Ark Me wouldn't be proud of the person I am today, but she would be proud that..." I take a deep breath, feeling weaker as the seconds pass by. "-- that I am fighting and keeping the ones I care about safe. I knew what I was doing when I blew up the bridge. There were about thirty Grounders on it."
Bellamy listens with his eyes scanning my face. The cloth in his hand drops down to rest on the ground.
"Their blood will always be on my hands." I sniffle, quietly. "I'm not proud of what I did, Bell, but I know that it was necessary for us to survive and it won't be the last time."
Octavia wanders back into the dropship with a small cup of water. She softly smiles at me on the ground. "Here." She hands the water to me after I push myself back up to lean against the wall.
"Thank you." I mumble to her. With shaky hands, I sip the water until it's half gone and hand it back to her.
"Princess?"
I hum in response, lazily looking back at Bellamy. My eye lids were growing too heavy for me to keep them open.
"You should get some rest."
A half smile settles on Octavia's lips as she watches us.
I slide back to the floor and, without thinking, I rest my head on Bellamy's chest. My right hand falls on his chest and I snuggle into his side. For a second, he pauses at my actions before he wraps his arm around me, securing my body against his.
"Never thought I see this happening." Octavia whispers when she sees my eyes are shut.
"Shut up." Bellamy responds, lightly.
XXXX
I really enjoyed writing this chapter. I hadn't planned on having Wren get sick, but then I thought of how cute it would be if Bellamy stayed by her side when she did get sick. Especially with the whole exchange between Jasper and Bellamy.
I swear she grows stronger with every chapter.
You should know that I purposely titled this chapter "Die" just to freak all of you out when you see that I've updated. I hope it worked.
Question: What did you think about Bellamy taking care of her?
So, yeah!
