33 - Fire

The woods were peacefully when they were empty. There is something serene about them. It could be the fact that I knew there were several guards standing behind me at the outside of the camp. After being stuck in the dropship for a day and a half because the virus took a strong liking to my body, I am more than thankful to be outside again.

To my surprise, Bellamy stayed inside the dropship with me for most of my sickness until he left to go play leader outside. Octavia helped nurse me back to health, along with Clarke. For everyone else, the virus only lasted half a day, but it decided to sick around a little bit longer for me.

"First watch is over." Bellamy's voice sounds from behind me, near the wall. "Go relieve Monroe on the south wall. Keep your eyes open." His boots crunch dead leaves and twigs on his way toward me. "Anything?" He asks once he reaches us.

"It's been two days." Clarke comments from where she is standing between the two trees. She glances at me sitting against a tree and Bellamy standing between us before looking back at the open woods. "Maybe the bomb at the bridge scared them off for good."

Bellamy side glances at her. "You believe that?"

I softly scoff at the idea. There's no way that the Grounders won't react to us blowing up the bridge. They must be livid right now. I rest my forearms on top of my knees and stare out at the trees. I'm the reason that several of their people are either injured or killed.

There will always be blood on my hands. I will live with that for the rest of my life. I barely remember any of the conversations I had when I was sick, but I do faintly remember Bellamy saying why he didn't trust me with a gun. What I said to him about the person I was on the Ark wouldn't be proud of what I've done down here is true. However, the fact that I am fighting to stay alive and to keep the people I care about alive, would make her proud.

Some of us have to get our hands a little bloody sometimes.

"No, they're coming." Clarke states and walks back to camp without another word, leaving Bellamy and I out here.

I keep my eyes locked on a tree far away. "Jasper thinks he can cook up some more gunpowder if he gets some sulfur and Raven says she can turn that into landmines."

"Watch where you step then." Bellamy says in an amused tone.

I crack a smile. "Funny."

"You okay?"

I glance at him, nodding once. "Yeah. I'm just thinking of every thing that's happened since we've come down here." I place my hand in his when he holds it out to help me up. With my hands, I brush off the dirt and leaves off of my pants.

"What I really need is a thousand more of her tin can bombs I can roll into their village and blow those Grounders to hell." Bellamy walks alongside of me back to the gate. He notices the glare I shoot at him. "That's what they want to do to us."

I sigh, "I can't believe we survived a hundred years just so we could slaughter each other." My arms fold over my chest and I stop a few feet before the gate. "I really wish there was another way."

There had to be another way to live down here without murdering each other. If only the Grounders didn't see us as a threat, but we kind of blew that option out of the water when we destroyed the bridge. We were enemies and the only thing we could do was fight. To think that not long ago, I sobbed over killing Dax and, now, I killed who knows how many on the bridge.

Earth changes you and I don't think it's in a good way.

"Any word from the Ark?" Bellamy angles his body toward mine. His arms matching my own over his chest.

I shake my head, thinking back to the conversation I had with Raven and Clarke. "No. Radio silence." I answer him, quietly. A soft sigh floats off of my lips. "I feel bad for Clarke. Her mom was coming down to help us and we all know what happened."

He nods his head, most likely remembering the Exodus ship not making it down here in one piece.

"No one is coming down to save us." I peer up at Bellamy. "We can only save ourselves and I'm not even sure we can do that." Without another word, I begin to trek through the gates of camp.

A couple of loud shouts earn my attention as I step foot back into camp. My eyes drift over a few panicked people until I notice the smokehouse has erupted in large flames. Bellamy races past me, rushing toward Octavia, who is hunched over and coughing from the thick smoke.

I react quickly and help lead Octavia away from the fire, eyes glued to the flames that have taken over the small building. All of our meat we caught was in that. All of it is burning to the ground. The flames are too hot for anyone to rush back inside to try and save it.

"Are you okay?" Bellamy asks his sister, concern laced in is voice.

Octavia nods her head in response, coughing from the smoke in her lungs.

"This is all your fault!" Murphy shouts at another kid named Del. Both of them covered in soot and coughing. Murphy storms over to him, angrily. "We told you it was too much wood."

"Get the hell away from me." Del shouts, attempting to break away from Murphy, who continues to punch him, repeatedly. He quickly fights back once gaining a slight upper hand.

I push myself from where I had crouched down beside Octavia and rush over to the two boys fighting. My fingers latch around a handful of Murphy's shirt from behind. From my peripheral vision, I see Bellamy stand up and be prepared to interfere. I muster enough strength to yank Murphy away from Del and slide into the space between the two of them, holding my arms up.

"Enough!" I yell, glaring at both of them, one at a time.

Del tries to push around me. I lower my hand that's outstretched toward Murphy and Del. I grab his shoulder in my hand and slam my knee up into his groin. He immediately tumbles to the ground, groaning.

"Save it for the Grounders!" I raise my voice, glancing at the two of them.

Murphy backs up a couple of steps with his hands held in the air. At least he is being smart enough to not fight back. Del remains on the ground, holding onto his groin. The rest of camp surrounds the three of us, all watching in silence.

"Well, now what the hell are we gonna do?" Octavia shouts, gesturing to the fire. "That was all the food."

I look back to Bellamy. Our luck seems to only be getting worse. My hands fall to my hips and I look at the half circle that surrounds the fire. "Get some water on this thing." I order before marching to the dropship.

The fire destroyed the entire smokehouse. All of the meat was burned, leaving only the bones behind. The fire stopped after the wood and everything turned to ashes. There were still hints of smoke in different areas.

A couple of people were cleaning up the mess while the others carried on with their usual jobs. We couldn't let this destruction ruin everything we have planned to prepare for the Grounders. We still had no idea when they would be attacking. We always had to be ready for it.

I step over a burnt piece of metal and walk closer to where Bellamy is crouched down in the middle of all of it. "Any idea what happened?" I ask him.

"Murphy says that Del kept feeding the fire," Bellamy answers while gazing down at the ashes around him. "Most because Octavia told him it was a bad idea."

I immediately frown. "And we believe Murphy?"

"I do," Bellamy nods. "Yeah."

"We have some wild onions and nuts in the dropship. Clarke is going over everything right now." I begin to tell him. "It's probably only enough to last us, maybe, one or two weeks." My eyes scan the remains of the smokehouse. "I'm assuming there's nothing left here."

"It all burned." Bellamy pushes himself back up in a standing position.

My hands fall to my hips as I weigh our options. "Then we have to hunt," I realize and look at his face, curious to see what he has to say about it. "Anyone we can spare goes out. I'll go with them."

Bellamy grabs my arm before I can walk away, pulling me back to where he stands. "The whole Grounder army out there?"

"Look, Bellamy," I sigh, understanding why he wouldn't want anyone to go out there. "We can't defend ourselves if we're starving. This might not be the best thing we can do, but it's our only option right now. You have to trust me, okay?"

"Each group takes someone with a gun, and they're for killing Grounders, not food. We don't have the ammo."

"Use the spears for hunting," I continue with what Bellamy was saying to everyone in the dropship, who is fumbling for their weapon to use. "Get what you can."

"Be back by nightfall. No one stays out after dark." Bellamy stands beside me.

I silently watch as several people walk out of the dropship with spears in hand. We gathered enough people to go out and hunt. Bellamy was going to stay at the camp while Clarke and I joined everyone else to go hunting.

A younger boy, Myles, approaches Clarke with a sheepish look on his face and a gun in hand. "Hey, Clarke. You alone? You maybe want to go together?" He nervously looks over to where I'm standing. "Wren can join us, too."

Clarke sneaks a glance at me with an amused smile. She places her attention back on the kid in front of her. "Sure. I'll get some gear."

I smile at Myles. "Let me grab a spear."

"Wren," Bellamy grabs my upper arm before I can walk away.

I raise a brow, glancing from his hand wrapped around me to his dark eyes. "Sunshine?" I smirk at the nickname.

He nearly rolls his eyes. "Be careful out there..." Bellamy pauses for a second before adding, "Princess."

These nicknames for each other used to be only said when we were mad at each other. It would seem that the two of us use them whenever we want now. He seems to call me 'Princess' more often, though. It used to bother me. Now, not so much.

I sarcastically salute him while backing toward the weapons against the wall. "Always." I spin around.

Finn stands beside Clarke. "You ready to go?" He asks her.

"I don't think so." Clarke shakes her head.

"Come on. I'm a good tracker. You're lousy with a spear, but you're sneaky. We make a good team."

Myles walks up to Clarke. "Hey, partner, we're wasting daylight." He notices Finn on the other side of Clarke. "Oh, Finn, you're joining the band?"

I come up beside both of them, reaching for a spear. "Don't worry, Finn." I smile and wink. "I'll be your partner."

"Sure." Finn says with a dejected sigh.

I laugh under my breath. This is not what Finn wanted to happen. He was obviously hoping to have some alone time with Clarke. That is definitely not going to happen now.

"Awesome." Myles says with a grin. He leads the way out of the dropship, glancing back at the three of us. "Haven't really got a chance to hang with you guys much. Hey, do you even know how I got arrested on the Ark?"

Finn shares a look with Clarke and me. He moves the curtain out of our way. "I'm dying to hear about it."

XXXX

Wren is going out to hunt with Clarke and Finn. This might be a good idea or a really bad one. You won't find out until the next chapter.

I'm not sure what I am going to do with myself when this story is over. I mean, of course, I'll have season two. I'm actually really excited to write about that season. I have so much planned already for it.

Question: How do you think the hunting will go?

So, yeah!
