Chapter 1
"Serafina! Get down here or you're walking to school!" My older brother, Jace, screams.
I groan, getting out of bed. I check the mirror and groan again. My long, curly hair is all knotted and messed up. How the hay am I supposed to be ready if my hair looks like a rat's nest?
"Jace! I'm gonna' walk! My hair looks terrible!" I shout.
"Fine!"
He leaves me alone in the house now. Our parents aren't here, because they never will be. They died when I was only 8. Since Jace is old enough now, he took me into his custody. Before that, we stayed with our grandparents in another town. Jace moved us here: Wimberley, Texas. Honestly, the name sounds like this place has mythical creatures. I really do expect to someday see a unicorn or something.
Grabbing a Twenty One Pilots shirt and sweats, I dash to the shower. After that, I attempt to fix my hair, actually succeeding in taming the wild beast. I slap on some vanilla scented lotion to keep my skin soft and hydrated. I put on my clothes, then my boots. Right before leaving my room, I grab my glasses. I'm still not used to wearing them since I just got them about a month ago.
When I get downstairs, I rush to the kitchen, grabbing a pop tart, and run out the door. I walk fast to the school. Fairview High. I've never been to the place before, and I'm kind of scared; no, I'm utterly terrified. A new high school is a pretty big deal. I used to have so many friends, friends I knew for years, and now, I have to go to this school with no one. It makes me want to just turn back around and never step on those blasted school grounds.
Getting there, I see that people still mill around. As I walk past them clutching my books and bag, they turn to me, starting to whisper. Their whispers send my heart into a whirlwind, my doubts from before school starting to scream louder in my head. But, then I actually catch what the whispers are saying, and my doubts fly away, only to be replaced with curiosity and amazement.
She's another one of them.
I wonder how she got in?
It's the new girl.
She's cute.
I blush from all the attention and walk faster, wishing I left my hair down so I could hide behind it. Looking around, I notice more stares and whispers. What's wrong with me? Did I do something? The doubts start back up again, but I push them away. For now, I need to get to my class on time, and that means stopping by the main office first.
I find the main office and get my schedule and locker. Hmm, History first. Room 208. Where's that? The bell suddenly rings, so, panicking, I dash around the halls, trying to find the room. Oh no! I'm already late! And it's my first day!
Quinn Harris pov
As soon as I step on campus, I smell the delicious scent of vanilla and something like a forest. Mate! Mate! My wolf, Hunter, howls in my head. I grin. It seems after 18 years, I finally found my mate. I search the halls for her, until I see her rushing down the hall I'm in. She looks so beautiful. Her bright green eyes framed by glasses, her small and petite figure, her cheeks red from running. Then I notice something: she's human, not a werewolf. Uh oh. How can I have her now? She doesn't know werewolves even exist. How can we be together if she doesn't even know that she's my soulmate and I'm a supernatural creature that can shift into a wolf?
She continues to run straight at me, but she doesn't seem to notice me. I step right into her pathway, just so I can feel her soft skin on mine for once. She slams right into me, toppling us both over. Sparks erupt along my skin as she comes into contact with me. We land on the floor, me on the bottom and her on top. Hunter purrs with pleasure and I have to fight the urge to kiss her. Her eyes widen and she jumps off me.
Serafina's pov
I'm so focused, I slam right into someone, sending us both toppling over.
"I am so sorry! I really am!" I cry out.
I jump off them quickly, blushing madly. Wow, first hour here and I've already messed up. The person stands, and I see that it's actually a really tall guy with black hair and bright blue eyes. I no joke have to tilt my head up to look at him in the eyes. Then again, I'm really short, at 5 foot 4.
"Again, I'm so sorry! I was trying to find room two-o-eight," I apologize again.
The guy chuckles a bit, but it seems strained for some reason.
"It's fine. Now, may I ask what's your name?"
"I'm Serafina, but I like Sera better."
"Serafina. What a beautiful name for a beautiful girl."
I blush, looking down. I feel like I'm in a cliché from a teen romance novel.
"T-thanks. What's your name?"
He looks caught off guard for a second.
"I'm Quinn Harris. So, I'm assuming you're the new girl then?"
"Yes."
"Great. Well, catch you around, Sera," he says before walking off.
I sigh, going back to finding my class. That was so cliché I can't even express how weird it felt. As I walk down a hallway, I finally see 208. Thank goodness! I open the door and immediately get attacked by stares. The teacher looks up as well.
"Are you the new student?" She asks me.
I nod, gulping. The students start to whisper. Why is everyone so surprised about me coming?! Have they never seen a new student before? Well, I guess since it's a very secluded town, not many newcomers are here, or even tourists.
"Welcome. Choose a seat, Miss...?" The teacher says, awkwardly trying to sound friendly.
"Davidson."
"Miss Davidson."
I walk to the back of the class, sitting in the far corner towards the window. The teacher goes back to teaching, but the students still steal glances at me as I take notes. I pay no mind, though, because I intend to get all A's this year, like every year.
Not even 10 minutes later, the door opens to reveal Quinn. The teacher frowns, while the girls start to giggle and fix their already perfect hair. I roll my eyes. Shallow numbskulls.
"Mr. Harris, just because you're the Al-" the teacher begins, but Quinn sends her a look, and she shuts up.
They both look to me quickly. I scrunch up my nose in confusion? What was she going to say? Alphabet? Alpaca?
"Just, don't be late next time," the teacher concludes, sighing.
He shrugs, smirking, and strolls over to the back... where I am. My eyes widen when he looks to me. He sits down beside me, in the only seat left over.
"Nice seeing you here, Angel."
"'Angel'? Really? Why?" I ask in minor disgust.
It's actually really sweet, but it just gives me an off vibe. I don't like it when boys give me attention; it creeps the heck out of me.
"Because you seem like a sweet little angel, hence the nickname, 'Angel'."
I blush. The teacher resumes teaching, so I pay attention, trying my best not to look to the side at Quinn.
The bell rings and I pack up my stuff. As I'm about to leave, someone grabs my hand. I turn to look up at Quinn.
"Yes?" I ask.
"Can I see your schedule?"
"Huh?"
"So I can take you to your classes, Angel," he explains, smirking.
I nod, handing him the paper.
"Hmm, it seems that we have everything except you have art? You draw?"
"Mhm, I love to draw."
"Well, come on, it's time to go to AP English."
I nod. He takes my hand in his, and I tense. He let's go, walking off, leaving me to follow him. What was that? I feel bad I basically rejected his attempt at being nice, but I just don't like people touching me, especially boys. It just creeps the heck out of me, especially after what happened to me in 9th grade...
"Sera? We're here," Quinn says, looking down at me.
Oops, I spaced out.
"Yeah? Oh, sorry. Let's go in."
I step inside and the same happens from my first class. As soon as Quinn enters, though, the whispers stop and everyone stare at him now. I tell the teacher who I am and walk to the back, Quinn following. This time, I sit one seat in front of the corner, for Quinn takes the corner seat. I sigh, taking out my things. The teacher begins, but I've already learned this, so I begin to doodle.
"That looks amazing, Angel. Where'd you learn to draw like that?" Quinn suddenly asks, from right by my neck.
Quinn
I look at her drawing. It really is amazing, but I'm more or less using the drawing to make an excuse for smelling her neck. I inhale, loving her sweet scent. Hunter howls in my head, wanting to come out, but I hold him back, not wanting to scare Sera. I feel her tense, then she abruptly stands up, breathing heavily. Her heart's going way too fast to be healthy right now. What did I do?
"Sera?" I ask.
Sera
The close contact sends shivers down my spine, but they're not exactly good.
"Uh, um, I taught myself," I stutter, as I feel him inhale by my neck.
Memories flash in my brain of when 'the incident' happen. I stand up, tears forming in my eyes. My skin crawls and I need to get away from Quinn.
"Sera?" Quinn asks.
I feel a single tear slip out of my eye. I let it be, so as not to draw attention to the fact that I'm crying.
"Miss Davidson, is everything alright?" The teacher asks me with concern.
I nod, trying not to sniffle.
"Yeah. Um, may I go to the restroom?" I ask meekly.
She nods, and I run out of the classroom. I make a dash to the school entrance, out into the forest surrounding the school. Branches pull at my clothes, ripping them up. What a shame, this was one of my favorite band shirts. Tears now stream down my face. I don't think I can show my face at school again. It's bad enough I'm new, but why did I have to have a breakdown today? In front of my peers, too.
A hole in the ground trips me and I fall to the ground, scraping my knees and hands. I hiss in pain and back up against a tree, trying to calm down my erratic breathing. Goodness do I hate running. I do love nature, though, and it's quite beautiful out here. No people to bully me, no brother to hover over me, no Quinn, and no him. I shiver at just the thought of him and his grey eyes, brown hair, pale complexion.
A twig suddenly snaps from somewhere in front of me. I jump, squeaking a bit like a mouse. My eyes dart through the trees, when they land on a pair of bright blue eyes. I scream, jumping up, and fleeing back to the parking lot. What the hay was that?
Quinn
As soon as my Angel runs out, I get up as well.
"Mrs. Foster, if you'll excuse me, I must go find her. She's my mate, but she's human."
She nods, afraid of me. I am the Alpha's son after all. I turn to the rest of the class.
"If anyone refers to our kind around her, they will have to answer to me, understood?" I growl.
They all nod, their eyes wide with fear. I turn around and run out the door, following her sweet scent. I catch her sniffles and my heart clenches. What happened to make her cry? All I know is that I need to comfort her.
She runs out to the forest, tripping and stumbling a drunk. I stay away, even when she falls and all I want to do is heal her scrapes and hold her to me. She leans against a tree, tears staining her innocent face. I shift into my wolf, hoping to be able to see her better, when a twig snaps under my foot. She squeaks, eyes searching for where the noise came from. They land on me, and she jumps up, screaming. And my Angel runs out of the forest, terrified of me. Hunter whimpers out loud, and we sit down on the forest floor, watching our mate leave school.
