Chapter Three

Today was the day he would see her face after weeks of being apart, but not the way he truly wanted to see her. Even though he was excited in a way, he had duties to take care of. Finally being outside of the glass window, Silver knew Ash trusted him. He was missing for too long and needed to play it safe. But no matter how safe he played it, he made a deal with the devil. At this point, he didn't have a choice. Walking toward the controls that held Scarlet's parents, he stared at them. The glass didn't prevent them from listening to everything. They knew it all. Everything they did, everything he did, and everything Ash did, yet they couldn't speak a word. Outside, at least. Who knew what they were talking about inside the glass. Silver disappointed them, he knew that just by the dark stares they gave him as he walked by. It was too easy to miss their smiling faces and remember the way things used to be. Laying a hand on the glass, he tried to give them a grin. His lips barely spread before his face went blank again. It was almost time.

Standing to the left of the glass, Silver placed his hands on the glass and sighed. Any minute now Scarlet would be just a few feet from him with a look he never imagined to see on her face. He wasn't ready. But he knew he would never be. Either way, it had to be done. Footsteps appeared against the ground shortly after, Ash's voice coming closer. Another pair of steps were right around the corner. The moment he dreaded was almost here.

Silver looked toward the entrance of the room, waiting. Sure enough, there she was in all of her beauty. Fiery hair and crisp red eyes stared him down, as if he was only the thing in the world. He wanted to run and kiss her, just like he promised in his mind the day she left. He would never leave her and it took all of his power to just stand there and watch the tears run down her face. It was cruel, but he knew better than to make a move. He could only hope that she would try something, anything.

Ash was talking, at least his lips were moving, but Silver didn't catch any of it. He couldn't take his eyes off of her. She walked closer to him, making his heart race. Apparently he mumbled something to make this whole thing worse by the way her face was drenched with tears, but all he wanted was for her to come closer. He didn't care what he said. If she started something, he'd finish it, easily. Just as he'd hoped, she grabbed his wrist. It was slight, but that was all it took. It was possible that Ash would punish him for his next move, but all that mattered was making her happy. He couldn't stand the way she looked at him. Going from smiling and laughing to crying as she stood so close to him and her parents wasn't anything he wanted. So, he did the next best thing.

Pulling her close, he smiled and brushed his lips against hers. He missed her. It was the first true kiss they had, even though he knew it was a terrible place, it'd surely be something he would remember. Passionate, just as he promised, one of his hands slid into her hair while the other stuck by her waist, getting her as close to him as he could. He loved every minute of it. Every moment of thinking about her while wearing her sweatshirt and wanting to be close was all worth it. Then he felt the stare of Ash, knowing what came next. He pulled away, taking a breath and smiling at her.

"I love you, Silver." She grinned, holding his hand.

The words he waited to hear finally came. His heart pumped faster, wanting to kiss her again, but he couldn't lie to her anymore. He did enough of that already. It was time to be honest. He knew it would break her into a million tiny pieces, just like it would break him, but it had to be done. "I love you too." He held her tight, knowing this might be the last time he'd ever get to feel her this way. "But there's something you need to know..." He stopped, taking in a deep breath before the words that he hated tumbled out of his mouth. "I'm sorry...for everything."
