chuck

Coming into the Safe Haven, Thomas thought that everything would be alright. Because his friends... well his remaining friends, didn't have to run anymore and could finally live the life he was supposed to live.

But oh, if it could all be that simple.

Every night would be a struggle for the brunette. He would wake up from nightmares, watching the people he loved died in front of him. Sometimes it would be on repeat, watching Chuck or Newt or Teresa fall to their death or maybe it would just be one of them.

He wishes he was with them. If he could take a gun to his head and end it right there and then, believe me, he would. But he couldn't. He couldn't because he felt that he would be leaving the coward's way; that his friends who had died for him would be disappointed that he didn't die of a worthy cause.

Late at night, Thomas would lay in his hammock, his hazelnut eyes glaring the ceiling above him. He could hear the soft waves of the ocean crashing, the crunching of dry leaves of trees. He wished his friends could have lived to listen to this.

He turns on his right side to look out towards the wooden door but he couldn't help but notice the little wooden thing placed down on his bedside table. He reached over to pick it up and instantly, his heart broke into pieces.

It was what Chuck had given him before he died. He could still remember his last words thanking him. The red blood had unfortunately stained the toy and Thomas didn't even notice he was crying until he could see patches of the wood turning darker.

His minds recalled a memory of the two, when Thomas was stuck in the Slammer and Chuck, being the great friend he was, brought him food. He remembers the younger boy talking about the toy, saying that he wanted to give it to his parents; if he met them.

"Only if he could." the brunette spoke, no one thankfully hearing him.

Not being able to go back to sleep, Thomas decided to get up, despite it being around 5 in the morning and took a walk down the beach they called home, the wooden figure in his hands.

He took a seat in the sand, the warm grains sinking through his toes as he watched the sun come up from the horizon. The shades of blue, orange, pink and purple memorised the boy and he wished that his best friend could see this for real. It was all fake in the Glade.

"Couldn't sleep huh?" spoke a raspy voice behind him and he looks over to see Gally.

Thomas didn't know what to think about Gally, he killed Chuck. He couldn't trust him, even ignoring the fact that there was no way he could have been alive when Minho throwing the spear through his chest. They held grudges but when he came to help them beat WICKED, his hatred for the boy with the interesting eyebrows definitely fell.

"What are you doing here, Gally?"

"I couldn't sleep. Now that we're finally safe, I still feel like something's gonna come and bite our asses."

"Tell me about it." giggles were exchanged before falling back into a soft silence with the two of them watching the sunrise.

"I know you hate me because I killed Chuck—"

"Can you blame me?" Thomas spoke in anger but reeled back, knowing that it wasn't great to start a fight now.

"But you need to know this. Chuck had to sacrifice himself for you. He had to jump in front when I tried to shoot you. It was WICKED's orders. I'm sorry, man."

"He didn't have to do it. He was just a kid, Gally."

"I know and he knew the consequences."

"Then why didn't he disobey them? We could have saved him, protected him."

"He said to me that he did it because you deserved to live. He thought you can help get everyone to their happy ending, he was sure of it. That's why he did it, Thomas."

Thomas didn't speak for a while as he tried to take that all in. His friend, who was almost his little brother, had to sacrifice himself so that WICKED could manipulate him and his friends even more. Chuck was a pawn in their plan to ruin humanity.

"Well at least those monsters WICKED are dead now." he finally mumbles, Gally nodding in response.

"I'll catch up with you guys later." Thomas shouted to Minho and Frypan as they walk to their bunks to get some sleep.

It was night and the moon was reflecting exactly on the piece of standing rock where people had carved names of the ones they've lost. Thomas didn't even realise that he was walking up to it until he was face to face with it.

His fingertips grazed over the name of his little brother and for once since all this had happened, the brunette felt the sides of his lips rise into a smile. He knew he that even though he had lost him, that Chuck was much safer where he is know than anywhere else.

Fiddling with the toy that he had given Thomas moments before his death, the brunette decided that he wanted to speak to him, even thought he knew he probably wouldn't hear it, just for a final goodbye.

"Chuck, you deserved to live. You did, even if you had to sacrifice yourself, you shouldn't have. You were only young, you had your own life ahead of you. It's unfortunate that it was cut short."

He had to stop for a moment due to the insane amount of crying and his ragged breath. He allowed himself to take some deep breath, calming himself down.

"I remember when we were in the Glade. You would tell me stories of everyone who had come up and I would try and pay attention to your rambling but it was adorable. I loved that even though you were scared, you still listened to me, someone you had only just met."

"You could have been immune, Chuck. You could have lived, survived the Scorch, defeated WICKED and been here with me right now to watch this beautiful night sky that is above me. I'm sorry that you're not."

Thomas looks out to the night sky, smiling at the twinkling stars that were spread across the midnight blue canvas. His brown eyes glanced around a group of three stars, cluttered together, causing him to smile.

"I know you're up there, little brother. I hope that you're with your mom and dad or with Newt and Winston. I hope that you're happy. I love you Chuck and I miss you one hell of a lot." Thomas ended as he walked away, taking one last glance at the name carved on the rock.

But little did the brunette know that the young boy was listening and watching over him and he was indeed, happy.
