Chapter 5: More Insults were Thrown than Quaffles.
Second Year
The next morning I woke up to the sound of several footsteps coming down the stairs. I didn't want the entire common room to find out I slept on the couch last night, so I sat up quickly. Then I noticed I had a warm blanket on me. It was a Slytherin one. I glanced around the room as people began coming down the steps. Who put this on me? I looked around and saw people walking down through the common room towards the exit. Draco gave me a smirk and walked out. It must have been him. He was the last one awake. Wow, that was...unexpected.
About a month passed since the start of the school year. I hung around with Jake more than Dasha and Eowyn. They were always with their boyfriends. At first I was really happy and excited for them, now it was just getting a bit annoying. They were nearly obsessed with their boyfriends. I didn't get it. So I let them have their space and when they asked me to hang out with them I would. The Slytherin team started up practicing for Quidditch. The team was hard on me and always found a way to sneak in little insults. It didn't matter though, I loved Quidditch and loved being a chaser! Classes were back to usual, extra homework and extra class work, which only meant extra detention for me.
My thirteenth birthday passed as well. I got some amazing gifts from Silvius and all of my friends at Hogwarts. It wasn't even the gifts that made me happy, it was the fact that people were actually remembering me. I'm not sure if I could ever get used to it after the way I was treated my first eleven years of life. Yet my birthday fun was cut short during the middle of the Halloween feast. We found out that Sirius Black tried to break into the Gryffindor common room. The Fat Lady who was their entrance had left at the sight of him after he cut through her portrait. The school went into a panic.
We all got called down to the Great Hall. There were over a hundred purple sleeping bags. Did we really have to sleep here? Not to be exclusive but shouldn't the Gryffindor's be the ones sleeping down here? It was their common room that was attacked. It was scary though how Sirius Black somehow managed to get into the castle even with all of the dementors. I felt safe with all of the teachers and other students around me. If Black was still in the castle, I doubt he would come anywhere near Dumbledore. I couldn't help but worry for Harry's sake.
I purposely got a sleeping bag in the corner that night. We still had to sleep by house so that the teachers could keep count of everyone. Dasha and Eowyn were next to me. Draco was a few sleeping bags down from me. "Why are you sleeping near the back door?" he asked me in a confused tone. I noticed that he had Crabbe on one side of him and Goyle on the other, just like body guards.
"Because I don't want to be near people..." I had a problem with sleeping between people, that's why my bed in the dorm was the last one on the end.
"So when Sirius Black breaks in here you'll be the first to die?"
"I'm willing to take that risk," I said turning around and putting my head on the pillow.
"Bloody idiot..." I heard Draco mutter.
Another week passed. The professors did a full search of the castle and couldn't find Black anywhere. How does one man disappear like that? We went back to our normal schedule since the castle seemed to be safe again. Harry was in the hospital wing. Yesterday at the Gryffindor vs. Hufflepuff match a dementor surrounded Harry when he was in the air. I didn't know which was scarier, Harry falling off his broom or the way Dumbledore reacted to the way dementor coming on the school grounds. I visited Harry a few times. His Nimbus was completely destroyed. He was really upset about that, I told him that he could borrow mine for the next match if he wanted too. Harry didn't seem to have the best luck.
One thing that got me really mad was that I was too young to go visit Hogsmeade. Harry couldn't go either, because his form wasn't signed. "Hey Scars!" I heard someone call. I turned around and saw Jake walking towards me. "Aren't you coming...oh wait, never mind..." he said quietly after.
"What?" I asked confused.
"I was gonna ask if you wanted to walk to Hogsmeade with us, but..."
"It's fine." I sighed and then smirked. "I'm sure I'll find some way to get in." He laughed.
"Yeah," he replied. "Good luck with that, I tried both my first and second years. Never happened. Professors even caught me once."
"Want to bet?" I asked him.
"Okay," he agreed with amusement flashing in his dark brown eyes. "If you find a way to get into Hogsmeade...I'll..." I thought for a moment, what could be bet for...
"Cheer for the Slytherin team." He looked at me wide-eyed. "Next Slytherin Quidditch match, you have to sit on the Slytherin side...and wear green!" I smirked at him.
"Okay," he agreed smirking back at me. "You're on, and if you don't find a way in. You have to do the same, but for...Hufflepuff."
"What?" I asked shocked. "Why not Gryffindor?"
"Exactly. Everyone knows you have friends in Gryffindor," Jake said. "And the house that Slytherin hates almost as much as Gryffindor is Hufflepuff." I rolled my eyes.
"Fine," we shook hands. "Buy yourself something green at Hogsmeade." I laughed and walked off to begin my search.
An hour and a half passed, and still nothing. I found no way to get past Filch and get into Hogsmeade. I was angrily storming down the hallway when I ran into a familiar face. "Harry!" I said, "Where have you been all day?" He got to leave the hospital wing last night. Then I noticed he was holding a large piece of parchment. "What'd you have there?"
"A map," Harry said and then showed it to me. It was an entire map of Hogwarts, yet there were dots moving around with peoples name on them.
"Does that show where everyone is?" I asked shocked. I noticed that my dot was right next to Harry's, and it showed the exact spot we currently were standing in. This could really come in handy when I needed to avoid Snape or Draco. "Where can I buy one of these things?"
"Yeah it shows where everyone is," Harry said. "I dunno though, Fred and George just gave it to me. Don't tell anyone about it, alright? I don't want a professor to take it away. It has secret entrances to place like the shrieking shack and Hogsmeade..." he was going on.
"Hogsmeade?" I interrupted probably sounding too excited. "Is that where you're heading?"
"Yeah why?" he asked.
"I'm coming with you!" I said happily, yes! I was going to win the bet.
"Alright," he said. "There is an entrance somewhere around here, and it will lead us into Honeydukes."
The map worked. We arrived in the basement of Honeydukes. I was amazed that it actually worked and it wasn't just some prank map the twins created. I thought after the first few minutes that we were lost under the school and I started going into panic mode. Then we came upon an old wooden door. When we opened it, it lead us into the crowded basement of Honeydukes. We walked up the creaking wooden steps and when we reached the door at the top, we were lead into the back of the store. "Wooh..." Harry and I both said at the same time. I've never seen so much candy in my entire life. The shelves were just loaded with all sorts of flavors and colors. I picked up a red lollipop.
"Blood flavored?" I said reading it. "Wonder what that taste like..." I said considering the fact of buying it. It reminded me of vampires.
"Please don't..." Harry joked pushing it out of my hand. "Okay, you probably shouldn't let anybody see you, considering the fact that you're a second year."
"Come on, I'm sure I blend in way more than you Mr. Harry Potter." I laughed as he blushed at that and then put my black hood up. "Don't worry, I'll keep a low profile."
"Alright, meet me back here around four." I nodded and then walked off outside.
It was freezing! There was snow falling from the sky. I probably should have worn something thicker than just a plain black hooded sweatshirt, my jeans, and black boots. Now all I need to do is find Jake to prove that I was here. I wandered around a few times, keeping my head down incase another Slytherin spotted me. I barely escaped a few of them, and even worse, was coming close to professors. Jake was nowhere to be seen. I kept walking down a path that was farther away from the town when I spotted him and the rest. They were all standing and facing a shack that I could only think would be the Shrieking Shack. There was barb-wire surrounding it and signs that warned to not go near. I quietly approached them from behind until I was close enough to hear everything they were saying. "I dare you to go all the way to the window and look in," Cal was saying to Gabe.
"No way," he said. "If you're so brave how about you go inside it?"
"You do it!" Nico yelled and then they all began going on about who was going to go closer to it.
"I'll do it," I interrupted them. They all quickly turned around and looked at me with shocked faces. I took my hood down. "Surprise!" I said happily and skipped over to them.
"How the hell did you get out of the castle?" Jake asked with a shocked, angry, and slightly amused tone.
"Top secret," I smirked at him. "Hope you got yourself a nice green scarf to wear next week!" I said patting him on the shoulder. He just kept staring at me as to figure out how I got out. "Now, what more will I get if I walk all the way to the Shrieking Shack, look in the window, and come back?"
"You have to go inside to get anything," Gabe said crossing his arms and smirking at me. I hesitated. It was just a myth right? Nothing bad ever really happened there. People liked to make up stories. It was probably just an abandoned old house with absolutely nothing in it.
"Fine," I agreed while crossing my arms.
"Alright, you'll get three galleons from each of us!" Nico said.
"Five," I responded.
"No way!" Cal said. "How about four?"
"I'll only do it for five." I smiled at them as they all sighed.
"Fine then," Nico said. "Five galleons from each if you make it inside."
"Never mind, maybe you shouldn't go..." Jake said, he sounded a little concerned. "After all the stories I've heard and if something happens, you'll get caught for sneaking out and possibly expelled." I considered that for a minute.
"Nothing will happen." I brushed it off. "I'll be back in a few minutes, get your money ready!" I started to climb the fence. Then it hit me, did I actually just agree to go into the Shrieking Shack? I got a little over confident on my success trip to Hogsmeade. No way in hell was I going to step foot into the Shrieking Shack, even if the stories were just myths. I was at the top of the fence, how was I going to get myself out of this without looking like a coward...
"Nyx?" a voice yelled.
Turning too quickly, I fell off the top of the fence and luckily landed in the deep snow pile. I looked up and saw Draco approaching with Crabbe and Goyle. He looked sort of angry in a way and was glaring at me. I saw Jake, Gabe, Cal, and Nico moving in closer. "I'd like to talk to Nyx alone," he said while eyeing them. Oh no, I was in trouble now that he knew I got out of the castle. Jake looked at me as if to see my response.
"Go," I said to them. "I'll see you guys back at the school." They looked like they were about to argue, but then they nodded and walked off. I stood up and walked over to Draco.
"Are you a bloody idiot?" he asked me. "Going to the Shrieking Shack? And how did you even get out of the school, you could be expelled for that." He said the last part threateningly.
"I walked out..." I replied slowly I said looking up from the ground.
"You walked out?"
"Yes," I said not wanting to tell him about the secret passage way. "Through one of the back doors, and then I just walked to Hogsmeade. Why, are you going to tell on me?"
"I might," he said coolly. "Haven't decided yet." I rolled my eyes, oh how great. A repeat of last year.
"How perfect..." I muttered.
"Get back to the castle," he said. "Before I decide to turn you in."
"Fine," I replied pushing myself up and brushing the snow off my legs, and then quickly walked away.
