Chapter Four
I keep very close to the book! So if you recognize a lot of this information, that is why.
Chapter 4: Sharks, Banshees, and Werewolves, Oh my!
Second Year
The next morning we began classes. This year I was actually taking Divination, taught by the wacky Professor Trelawney. I was also taking Care of Magical Creatures, which was luckily taught by Hagrid. I was going to be one of the few second years in a class filled mostly of third years. Divination was a joke class, at least that is what Jake told me. It was my first class of the day and I sat with a few other second years. We practiced reading shapes that were left in our cups after drinking the tea. I noticed that if you told her something negative, she loved you for it. Luckily I went last, I picked up on her liking of 'darkness' quickly and used it to my advantage.
Later on that day, I headed off to Care of Magical Creatures. For once I was excited to go to a class. Dasha and Eowyn were also taking that class along with their boyfriends. I didn't want to interrupt them so I walked over and stood next to Hermione. It was going to be weird taking a class with them. Care of Magical Creatures was a mixed year class. "Oh hello Carlie," she greeted. "I didn't know you were taking this class, I was just waiting for Harry and Ron to arrive."
"It was a last minute decision," I said with a shrug. "I'm taking this and Divination."
"Divination," Hermione replied in an annoyed tone. "I'm taking that as well, a waste of time if you ask me." With her busy schedule, I wondered why she was even taking it? Or how she was even taking it for that matter.
"Tell me about it." Harry and Ron joined us shortly after that, then Hagrid joined us and he lead us out into the woods. Unforunately, Draco was also in that class and he glared at me once he saw me near Harry again. I didn't understand why it bothered him so much. He hated Harry and clearly hated me, so why didn't it matter if we were friends.
We arrived into the middle of a clearing in the woods. This was much better than sitting in a classroom already. "Now, firs' thing yeh'll wan ter do is open yer books..."
"How?" said the cold voice of Draco. I glanced back at him but looked away. That was a good question because I had no idea how to open this book without getting attacked by it.
"Eh?" said Hagrid. I secured my book with a belt. It was growling at me.
"How do we open our books?" Draco repeated. He held up his copy of The Monster Book of Monsters which was tightly bounded by a rope. Hagrid looked around and noticed that we all had our books bound together somehow.
"Yeh've got ter stroke 'em," Hagrid said and took the book out of Hermione's hands and stroked the spine of it.
"Oh, how silly we've all been!" Draco sneered. "We should have stroked them! Why didn't we guess to stroke the violent books?"
"Shut up Malfoy," I muttered towards him while shaking my head.
"I-I thought they were funny," Hagrid replied uncertainly.
"Oh enormously funny!" Draco went on. "Really clever, giving us books that try and rip our hands off!" Afraid of a little book, Draco? I wanted to say...but these books were actually a little terrifying. Now that I knew you had to stroke them to open them though, well that made them a little better.
"I," Hermione began stating. "Think they're funny."
Hagrid smiled weakly and then told to us to stay where we were. He disappeared into the woods and came backing with a creature that had the head of an eagle and the body of a Pegasus. "Ta-da!" he said. What was that creature? It had the head of an eagle but the body of a horse...Oh, it was a Hippogriff! I remember seeing one of those in the prophet once, they were dangerous. I wondered why Hagrid was showing it to us in person. He went on about the history of Hippogriffs and explained not to insult them. He brought out a bunch of them after. How did he even get them? We were all assigned in groups to get them to like us. I worked with Hermione, our Hippogriff liked us instantly. "Now who wants ter ride 'em?" We all quickly backed away, expect for Harry who was mindlessly glancing around. "Harry!" Hagrid said happily and pushed Harry over to the Hippogriff whose name was Buckbeak. He pushed Harry onto the Hippogriffs back while Harry was glancing nervously at us. The Hippogriff took off into the sky until we couldn't see it anymore.
"Oh gosh," Hermione said. "I hope he'll be okay, Hippogriffs are strange creatures..."
"He'll be fine," I assured her.
Shortly after that, we saw them coming back and they quickly landed onto the ground. Everyone began applauding and cheering, except for the Slytherins, excluding myself of course. Harry jumped off and we all patted him on the back. "Not so tough are you," Draco said approaching the Hippogriff quickly and muttering stupid comments. Suddenly, the Hippogriff rose into the air and nailed Draco with his right hoof. Draco fell to the ground, I rushed near him but not close enough to make it look like I even cared. I stared at him wide-eyed, he was lying on the ground clutching his arm and muttering, "I'm dying, I'm dying..."
"You're not dying!" I yelled to him. He was being dramatic, but his arm still needed to be treated. "Hagrid! He has to be taken to the Hospital wing!" Hagrid nodded and picked him up and began walking towards the Hospital wing.
"You wait until my father hears about this!" Draco was yelling. Oh boy.
I later found out that day that Buckbeak has been sentence to death. Harry, Ron, and Hermione went to visit the Hippogriff while I was in Defense against the Dark Arts with Lupin. He was an excellent teacher, we studied boggarts today. They took the form of your biggest fear. Dasha's boggart was a Great White shark. I found that funny how she lived in Australia and all too, Eowyn's was a banshee covered in thousands of spiders which covered two of her fears, and mine was a Werewolf. Lupin looked at me mysteriously after seeing mine, I'm not sure why though. I've always been afraid of Werewolves, they were the natural enemies to the Vampire's who I adored.
Draco didn't show up until seven days after the 'accident'. When I walked into the common room, he was propped on the couch with tons of people surrounding him. His arm was in a sling. "How is it, Draco?" Pansy asked while sitting next to him and stroking his hair. All of the desperate looking girls were crowding around. "Did it hurt?"
"Yeah," Draco said in a brave tone, all the girls giggled and I notice him wink at Crabbe and Goyle. I rolled my eyes and sat down at the table. I was attempting to start an essay. After ten minutes, the common room began to thin out and I heard Draco call, "Hey Nyx". I looked up from the book.
"What?" I asked him.
"Aren't you going to ask me how I'm doing?" he said smugly.
"Nope."
"And why not?" he asked with a smirk on his face.
"Because it's not even that big of a scratch." All of the remaing girls around him gasped."You're lucky your head wasn't taken off by that thing."
"What are you talking about Nyx?" Parkinson shrieked. "He can barely move! You saw how that Hippogriff charged at him and knocked him to the ground."
"Must have missed that part Parkinson," I replied. "The only thing I saw was it scratch him in the arm with its hoof after he stupidly approached it."
"How dare you," Pansy said glaring at me. "He's lucky to be alive!"
"Okay, you just continue thinking that Parkinson," I said. She glared at me, as did her clones Christina, Amelie, and Celina. Christina was definitely a mini Pansy, Amelie was a mini Millicent, and Celina was a mini Daphne. It was so bizarre, what a boy could do to you.
Eventually, I was the last one in the common room and for once I finished my essay on time. I had to get some sleep. Dasha and Eowyn were so tired that they have been sleeping since we got in. I walked up the steps and tried to open the door but it was locked. Locked! Are you kidding me?! Christina, Amelie, and Celina locked me out! It was probably stupid Parkinson's idea. I knocked on the door, I heard giggling, so they must be awake. Although Dasha was an early riser, she was a tough sleeper, absolutely nothing woke her up. Same goes for Eowyn. "Open the freaking door!" I yelled to them. They began laughing harder. I sighed heavily annoyed and walked back down to the common room. I had no way of getting in. I even tried the 'Alohamora' spell on the door but it was charmed.
I flopped down onto the couch with an annoyed sigh. "Too concerned about me that you lost sleep?" I heard a voice say and then I jumped up. Draco was sitting in the chair across from the couch.
"What are you still doing here?" I asked surprised. I thought he went back upstairs.
"Couldn't sleep," he said patting his arm. "Too much pain."
"Sure..." I glared at him, he just smirked at me.
"What are you still doing up?"
"They locked me out thanks to you!"
"How is this my fault?" He laughed.
"It's because I called you out on faking an injury."
"Serves you right." I rolled my eyes and fell back onto the couch.
"Yeah, whatever," I replied. "Now if you don't mind I have to sleep down here in the freezing cold common room. Good night." I rolled over and turned my back to him. I heard him getting up and heading upstairs. I quickly fell asleep.
What do you think of this chapter? It had more Draco in it than most! I'm going to try to keep that way for the rest!
