Chapter 15
For the first time all week, I finally have time to visit the holographic library here in London. The library is a cold pristine white similar to the science building where I work. However, the inside is very different from the labs. There are several rooms set up to be holographic where I can access Revere's entire library with just a single thought.
From this room which my coded chip gives me access too, I can relieve past events as though they are happening right here in this room because in my mind, they are. Searching the holographic Library, I try to find a simple explanation about hidden words in binary code. I came across the lecture about the basics of binary code.
*"A binary code represents text, computer processor instructions, or other data using any two-symbol system, but often the binary number system's 0 and 1. The binary code assigns a pattern of binary digits (bits) to each character, instruction, etc.
In computing and telecommunications, binary codes are used for various methods of encoding data, such as character strings, into bit strings. Those methods may use fixed-width or variable-width strings.
In a fixed-width binary code, each letter, digit, or other character is represented by a bit string of the same length; that bit string, interpreted as a binary number, is usually displayed in code tables in octal, decimal or hexadecimal notation. There are many character sets and many character encodings for them.
A bit string, interpreted as a binary number, can be translated into a decimal number. For example, the lower case a, if represented by the bit string can also be represented as the decimal number 97."
The lecture isn't very long, but it is simple, straightforward, and makes sense. My dad always enjoyed computer coding and would naturally use a computer code to hide information. Not many people even remember we once used binary code because they are so used to quantum computers.
What I can't seem to figure out, is why my dad would have a whole journal in code. As far as I know the only suspicious thing you ever did, was die. Even then, that was only because he was one of the first to succumb to the plague and no one knew what was happening to him.
When I have free time, I'm start to decode the journal but it will likely take me a very long time given how long it is and how little free time I have. I love the work I am doing the labs, but it keeps me so busy. Currently we are looking at the potential for a genetic immunity found a small population of Revere. The research is long and tedious, but even if it only amounts to a little bit of knowledge gained it will be worth it.
The work would be better if it works only, Hunter ignores me and disappear sometimes for extended periods of time. Some days, he doesn't even come into work at all. I wish he would talk to me, but the only times he ever speaks to me are when it's necessary for the work we're doing. As I return to our mini house, Joy comes running out to greet me.
"Coral, you're finally home. What took you so long?" Joy interrogates me."Kayla is still at work so the only person here is Alyssa who always ignores me. I am so bored. Anyways, now that you're home I need to go to the common building to study with a few of my friends from school."
"Alright," I reply because it's impossible to say no to her anyways. "Just make sure you are home in time for dinner!" I call after her as she runs out the door with her backpack.
Not long after Joy leaves, Alyssa stomps out of house. I'm finally alone in here and can have a few minutes of peace and quiet as I try to look through dad's journal. As I start to decode the first few pages of the journal, I realize I might not know my dad as well as I thought I did. He keeps mentioning being part of the Scientific Elite, as far as I know my family has always been Srats except Lillian who abandoned us in favor of the Elite.
I wonder if this is how my mom knows Charlotte. It makes sense. If Mom and Charlotte were friends a long time ago, then that would mean mom was an Elitist as well as my father. Apparently, my parents kept a lot of secrets from me which were never supposed to come to light.
I'm working on trying to decode more of the journal to figure out why my parents left the Elite, but Kayla interrupts me as she opens the door and comes in finally home from work.
"Hey, how was work today?" I greet her as she walks in the door.
"Pretty good," she responds with a tired smile. "The kids were pretty hyper today so they weren't as obedient as usual. They weren't too bad though, overall they're pretty good bunch of kids. Still having issues with your very attractive coworker?" She teases in reference to Hunter.
"I would be, but he's never there. He disappears for long periods of time, and then reappears as though nothing has happened. It would be a lot less lonely if he would actually talk to me." I reply in a slightly morose tone.
"Turn that frown upside down. Cheer up, it could be a lot worse. I mean, should be horribly ugly to be hitting on you all the time and never leave you alone." She finishes with a grin trying to cheer me up.
"Oh gosh, that would be terrible." I groan. I should probably be a lot more grateful given that I'm in an isolation camp I never should have got a chance to get into because of my mother. Without this opportunity, Joy and I would likely die of the plague within a year.
The rest of the evening passes uneventfully. Although, Joy did give me a bit of a scare when she was a few minutes late coming home. She says the clock in the common building is a few minutes slower than the clock here in the house. I think she just lost track of time doesn't want to admit it.
Now that I finally know my way around the camp, I don't need Hunter to show me the way to the labs anymore. For the first few days I lived here, he had to walk me here every day until I memorized the route.
I had over to the area of the building we work and and I'm shocked to see him actually here. Usually I get here before him. I'm even more surprised when he turns around and starts to talk to me.
"I believe I owe you an apology, I haven't been the most welcolming." He says with a sheepish grin.
