Chapter 14
It's been several days since I first started working in the labs. They are incredible. The equipment in there is way beyond anything I could have ever imagined having access to. It's all state-of-the-art and brand new. Hunter still doesn't talk to me, although on the few occasions that he does it is always curtly and as short as he can make it. Alyssa almost never comes back to the mini house which is probably a good thing because Kayla, Joy, and I don't really like her and the feeling is pretty mutual.
Joy is really enjoying her schooling and they have been pushing her hard to improve. This makes her very happy because she loves being challenged. Kayla is equally thrilled with the job she was assigned. They chose her to be one of the citizens that teaches the children. She doesn't teach the advanced students like Joy, but focuses more on early childhood education.
In the evenings, like right now, we just sit on the first floor of our tiny house in front of the fireplace talking. Although right now, we are just sitting in silence enjoying the quiet evening.
"We should do something," Joyce suddenly pipes in shattering tranquil silence of the evening. I should have known she would say something eventually, with Joy around nothing ever stays quiet for long.
"I'm really bored," she complains.
"Well then study," I suggest. "Or if you don't need to study, work ahead in some your math problems for school."
"I don't need to study. I already know, it all it is really easy. Also, I already worked ahead of the logarithmic function section to the trigonometry section and did all of those problems." She reminds me of myself when I was her age, except even I didn't think doing math was as fun as she seems to find it.
"If you don't know what to do, then let's play a game." Kayla suggests finally taking pity on Joy. No matter how many times I tell her the more she gives in to Joyce complaining the more dramatic and demanding Joy will get, she always gives them when Joy starts to look like she's about to cry. Although, I've known Joy long enough to know when she's faking it to get what she wants. And right now, she is definitely faking it.
"What game should we play?" Joy inquires, thrilled someone is finally paying attention to her.
"I don't know, you're the one that's bored. Why don't you pick one out?" Kayla suggest not seeming all that interested in actually playing a game. She always gets herself into these messes with Joy because she feels bad for Joy and chooses to agree to something she doesn't actually want to do.
"Let's play..." She trails off trying to think of a game. "Twenty Questions!" She yells out excitedly proud of herself for coming up with a game for us to play.
"I will think of an object in my head, and you and Kayla will have twenty yes or no questions to try and guess what I am thinking of. If you guess it correctly within twenty questions, then you win. If you are unable to guess it correctly, then I win and the two of you lose." There's no escaping it now, since she has found a game to play we will have to play it with her. I hope she only wants to play one round because I was really enjoying the silence of the peaceful evening and just being able to relax and think.
"Okay, I have chosen the object and am thinking of it. You can start asking questions now, but make sure you keep track of how many."
"Is it something typically found in a house?" I ask to start us off.
"Nope," she giggles mysteriously clearly thinking she's clever with whatever object she is thinking of.
"Is it something related to science?" Kayla asks knowing how much Joy love science and math.
"How did you know?" Joy asks with a pout. "I still don't think you can guess it in less than twenty questions."
"Is it usually found outside?" I question.
"No," Joy replies gleefully, thrilled at the amount I continue to guess wrong.
"Is it common in most labs?"
"Yes," Joy replies seeming slightly disappointed at the number of questions Kayla was getting a yes to.
"Is it made of wood?" I know it probably isn't, but I'm not really all that invested in this game.
"Nope."
"Is it made of plastic?" Kayla guesses, her question is much better than mine and is a lot more likely to be found in a lab especially when compared to my poor guess of wood.
"No, try again.
"Is it made of glass?" I question, this time actually putting thought into what I am asking.
"Yes." Finally I get one right! Up until now Kayla has been getting all the yes answers and I have only been getting no answers.
"Is it bigger than two feet?"
"No," Joy smirks. Finally Kayla gets one wrong.
"Is it wider than my hand?" I ask as my question.
"No." There went my hopes of a streak of yes answers. I got one before I'm now back to no answers. "You've already used nine of your questions she reminds us in a gloating sing-song voice.
Before Kayla can ask her question, the door to our mini house crashes open. Alyssa must actually be here for once because she is the only other one with a keycard coded to give her access to the house. She storms into the room and she climbs up the ladder to the second-story of the house. I can hear her stop around upstairs for a few minutes as Kayla, Joy, and I just look at each other in mild amusement until the stomping stops and the house is quiet again as it was before she arrived.
"Would you like to finish the game?" Joy asks in a slightly subdued voice.
"No, I'm sorry Joy. However, we need to be getting to bed. Kayla and I have work in the morning and you have school. All of us need enough sleep to be able to focus tomorrow."
"Fine, I'll just tell you the object I was thinking of then since you don't have time to guess it. I was thinking of a volumetric pipette." She states proud of the clever object she chose.
"That is a good one. I'm not sure Kayla and I would have been able to guess it before we ran out of time." I almost feel bad we can't finish the game, but it's getting late and we have to get to bed.

Above is a picture of a volumetric pipette.
As I lay down on the bed ready to go to sleep, I can't help but think of the code in my father's notebook. Before I fall asleep, I remember something my father once told me. He said that before we started using Quantum coding for computers, we used something called binary code. It was something he used to study in his free time before he succumbed to the plague. I don't remember anything about it, but if I have time I will do some research at the library here in London.
I hope you are enjoying thestory so far. Please vote, comment, and share!
