Chapter 13
"Unfortunately you've been assigned to me." He states in a curt manner as always. I wonder if he ever smiles.
"Hello!" I say in an extra chipper voice just to annoy him. "And you could at least try to be more polite and friendly because we are stuck together for the foreseeable future whether we like it or not."
"Listen and listen well," he begins in a slightly menacing voice. "I am only doing this because Aunt Charlotte insisted I join this camp. She then chose to assign me to help you get used to your job in the lab because apparently she was once good friends with your parents a long time ago."
"Don't you think you should try to at least be nice to me for her sake if not for mine." I suggest, hoping it doesn't make him hate me even more.
"No, I don't want to do anything now I am only helping you because she threatened to take me out if I didn't. She claims she is concerned for my safety, but it was just her way of forcing me into one of the isolation camps." Forcing? Why would anyone have to be forced into these camps? I am desperate at the chance to escape the plague no matter how slim it may be.
"Why would you not want to be in one of these camps?" I question him genuinely curious.
"None of your business." He replies in a curt tone effectively ending what could almost be considered a conversation. Well then, he isn't very friendly, but then again, I already knew that.
"Are we there yet?" I know, immature of me, but he is really starting to get on my nerves. He talks only when he wants to and to who he wants to without caring about his attitude while doing so.
In response, he glares at me before shaking his head curtly. "Quit being so annoying, you will know when we get there."
We finally arrive at the most state-of-the-art building I have ever seen. The Scientific Elite must really be worried about the end of Revere if they spent so much money on a facility for a camp of only five hundred people.
The building is made completely of Steel and what appears to be glass at first glance, but once I get closer I realized I cannot see through the class because it is dark and tinted. There appear to be six stories above ground, but there is likely to be at least one maybe two or even three below ground I can't see.
I remember from the material in the orientation packet I was given last night that everything related to science in the camp can be found in this building. If I recall correctly, the first three floors above ground are for medical staff and all health-related needs. All below ground floors, I can't remember how many there are, are strictly for research related to the plague. The third floor is for students because all their studies will now be focused on STEM related classes so they can become the researchers of tomorrow. The fourth and fifth floors are for all things related to agriculture and the environmental resources necessary for the continued survival of those living here in London. Finally, the top floor is a quarantine which I hope we never have to use.
An AI is seated at the front desk. It requests our identification chips. Hunter presents his wrist for scanning while I just stand there confused. The AI turns to me and demands my wrist for scanning.
"I never received and identification chip." I turn helplessly to Hunter hoping he has something to help me.
"Of course you don't," he sighs, in my opinion somewhat over dramatically, while rolling his eyes in frustration. "I just had get stuck with you." He mutter under his breath or at least he thinks he does, I can still hear him though.
"Come with me." He commands in a more audible voice before starting off towards one of the many hallways in this building. I try to follow, but the AI cuts me off and blocks my path.
"I can't." I call after him.
"Just wait here then! Surely you can handle that." He snaps before stalking away. I hope he comes back. From what I know of him so far, he wouldn't hesitate to leave all alone here with the AI until the end of the when he finishes working. After about twenty minutes of him being gone, I try to turn around and leave. I will just go home for the day and try to get assigned to someone else by tomorrow. Before I can take more than a step, the AI stops me again.
"You do not have an ID chip, so you must be escorted out by an official citizen of London until then you are to be detained here."
Just as I am about to make a run for it, Hunter and a boy with short but curly red hair and freckles I don't recognize walk into the room.
"It's about time." I mutter under my breath. They likely took the scenic route just to annoy me and make me wait longer.
"I am sorry, I cannot hear you. Please speak up." The ridiculous AI requests. Hunter glares at me with even more hate than usual. He probably knows I was talking about him. Although I can't imagine why he would upset given how rude he has been to me.
On a slightly different topic, I despise whichever Elitist designed and programmed this awful AI to apologize and say please when all I want to do is send the piece of junk to a recycling facility where it can be made into something genuinely useful.
"Copper, this is Coral." He turns to me. "And Coral, this is Copper."
"Now that I've introduced you to her Copper. Fit her with an ID chip." He demands of the stranger whose name is apparently Copper. Instead of looking offended at Hunter's rude treatment, Copper just smiles at me and starts to get out the supplies he needs.
"Don't let him fool you, Hunter is actually pretty decent. He just doesn't like new people. Now give me your wrist for the chip." He swipes a numbing ointment across the inside of my wrist before making a small cut and inserting the chip. Before I know it, he is fusing the skin back together with some fancy medical tool I forget the name of.
"There we go, all done." Turning to Hunter he says good bye before heading back in the direction he came from. He must be a friend of Hunter's because never once did Hunter glare at him which is rather unfair because never once has he not been glaring at me.
Now that I am finally cleared to fully enter the building, he leads me through a series of turns before come to a door which opens to reveal one of the most incredible sights I have ever seen in my life.
I hope you like the story so far. Please vote, comment, and share.
