Chapter 13
I sat in the car on the way back to Jill's house, fiddling with my new phone with furrowed brows and biting the inside of my lip while I did so.
It was a cheap smartphone, but it was something that I knew that I would be able to handle and use, even though I had never had a phone before this.
"So, how are you liking your new phone, Blaire?" Jill asked and raised an eyebrow in question while she stared at me from the corner of her eyes before she turned her attention back to the road.
I shrugged and grimaced while I continued to play with it. "Good, I think," I said and pressed a button on it to pull up the weather.
'To continue, turn on device's location,' it read, which was something that I didn't want to do, even though I knew that other people would be able to see where my phone was without the location thing on.
I bit back a small sigh and got out of the app before I looked at Jill with a small frown on my face. "Are you sure that this wasn't a big deal?" I asked and held up my new phone before I set it down on my lap with it turned "off." "I mean, you had even gotten me a case and a screen protector to go with it. I-I don't know how I can pay you back."
Jill laughed and shook her head, biting back a small smile. "I do not need any form of money from you, Dear," she said with a small chuckle in her voice while she shook her head again. "Your presence is payment enough." She flashed me a small smile and a wink before she turned her attention back to the road.
My cheeks instantly turned red when she said that, and I looked away from her. I didn't say a word while I looked out the window, watching as the trees flew by while we made our way home.
Home...
It was a new concept for me to be able to call a place my home when I had never remembered a place like that, especially at the house I had lived in for most of my life where I was not respected or treated like I was a part of a family.
Hell, I couldn't even remember a time where I hadn't been at the orphanage and with a family of my own before then.
Jill cleared her throat and placed her hand on my leg, and I couldn't help but grow tense and shift away from her. She instantly removed her hand from my leg, and I couldn't help but clear my throat and shift in my seat.
"Ummm... sorry, sorry," I said before I cleared my throat again and shifted in my seat some more. My cheeks turned redder, and I couldn't help but lick my lips and bite the inside of my lip. "I did not mean to flinch away from your hand like that, Jill."
Jill bit back a small smile and shook her head. "It doesn't matter, Dear," she said softly. "I understand, and I am sorry that I placed my hand on your leg. I didn't know that you would jump like that." She shrugged and grimaced. "Or become so tense."
I pressed my lips into a thin line and folded my arms across my chest. "I didn't know that I would be doing that either," I said and chewed on the inside of my lip. I looked at my new phone that was in my lap before I looked out the window again. "Am I going to school tomorrow?" I asked and turned to look at Jill with my lips pressed into a thin line.
"Yes," Jill said and nodded in confirmation. "You will be in the same grade as Declan and Patrick," she added. "You will also be in the same grade as the mayor's son, Scott." She cleared her throat and shifted in her seat, growing serious.
I slowly nodded and pressed my lips into a thinner line. I didn't say a word and looked out the window again.
Something large and brown caught my eye when we passed the welcome sign of the community before it "disappeared" into some of the thicket and brush.
I turned my whole body to look that way, my eyes trained on the trees again just to see if I could see it again.
"What is it?" Jill asked and glanced at me from the corner of her eye. Her whole body was tense, and I could tell that she was nervous about what I had seen. "Are you ok?"
"I caught sight of something large and brown," I said and continued to look out the window to see if I could see it again but couldn't for some reason. I sighed frustrated and shook my head, pursing my lips in annoyance before I leaned back in my seat again. "But I can not seem to find it again."
Jill set her jaw and nodded. "Did it scare you?" she asked, and I looked at her to see that she was tense and nervous.
I gave her a weird look and shook my head before I turned my attention back to the window.
"Well?" Jill asked as if she wanted me to vocalize what I had done but just shake my head.
"No," I said verbally, biting back a small sigh while I leaned my head against my window. I bit back a small sigh and closed my eyes before I opened my eyes again while I stared at him. "It did not scare me."
But it did make me curious because I had no idea what it was...
"What was it?" I asked. I furrowed my brows and cocked my head while I stared at her with a small frown on my face. "Did you see it?"
"No," Jill said and shook her head, and I could tell that she was lying to me. She gulped and set her jaw while she continued to look at the road, her eyes flicking left and right as if she was worried that something would appear at the side of the woods and make me question her further. "I did not see it."
I bit back an annoyed sigh and cleared my throat while I shifted on my feet. "Why are you lying to me, Jill?" I asked with a small frown on my face while I looked at her with a raised eyebrow in question.
Jill looked at me from the corner of her eye and raised an eyebrow in question. She didn't say a word while she slowly nodded, looking more nervous than she had in the past few seconds.
"Jill, please," I said, trying but failing not to sound like I was begging. I bit the inside of my lip and cleared my throat while I shifted some more in my seat.
Oh, Gods, please let her tell me what I have seen. Please...
I took a deep, shuddering breath before I released it and cleared my throat, shifting some more in my seat. "What was that creature, Jill?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. "I know that you saw it and know that you are lying to me."
"How?" she asked and raised an eyebrow in question while she looked at me, turning her head to the side. She slowed the car down just a tad for some reason before she turned her attention back to the road.
I bit back an annoyed sigh and looked out the front window. "How what?" I asked and folded my arms across my chest, setting my jaw.
Energy and excitement filled the air around me, and it wasn't just that but there was a trace of nervousness and anxiety, and I had a feeling that it was coming from the female beside me.
"How do you know that I am lying?"
I opened my mouth to tell her but stopped and closed my mouth because I had no idea how I knew that she was lying to me.
Instead, I shrugged and grimaced while I pressed my lips into a thin line. "I don't know," I admitted before I cleared my throat and shifted in my seat. "All I know is that you are lying, and I do not like it at all."
She paused and started to tap on her steering wheel nervous before she cleared her throat and shifted in her seat. "Will you be scared of it?" she asked as raised an eyebrow in question, setting her jaw.
"Of what?" I asked. I furrowed my brows and cocked my head while I stared at her, silently praying that she would answer my question about what it was and if she had seen it.
"The brown thing," she replied, silently confirming my suspicions that there had been a large brown thing in the woods and that she had seen it. She cleared her throat and shifted in her seat some more while she looked at me again. "Will you be afraid of it?"
"No," I said and shook my head. "I will not be afraid of it." I cleared my throat and shifted some more in my seat, the excitement in my chest bubbling over until I had to shift in my seat, and my heart skipped a beat before it started to pound hard and fast in my chest. "I have dealt with far too much bs to be scared of something large and brown, especially since I do not know what it was."
Jill stayed silent and waited for me to elaborate on what I meant by the amount of bs I had been through, but I didn't; I couldn't.
I had secrets of my own, secrets that I did not know if I should say out loud or to keep them to myself until the time was right, whenever that would be.
I knew that I was different from other people and knew that I was in fact not human like some, and myself, thought I was, even though I had no idea what I was or what I could do.
I knew that there was something different about me, something that scared others but seemed to earn the respect of the rest.
I had a feeling that it had to deal with the two things in my possession, even though I had never tried them out, for I had been warned not to until I got something else from someone that I could not remember.
Jill bit back an annoyed sigh and slowly nodded, pursing her lips in annoyance because she knew that I wouldn't answer her question. "What have you heard about this place?" she asked and looked at me with hard eyes that were filled with nervousness and fear, changing the subject.
I shifted in my seat and bit the inside of my lip while I tucked my head closer to my chest. "I was told that there were Supernatural Creatures that lived here," I said, finally, my voice barely above a whisper, "like Werewolves."
Jill set her jaw tighter and slowly nodded while she grabbed the steering wheel tighter. "And who told you about them?" she asked and looked at me before she looked at the road to make sure that she didn't run into anything.
"Justin," I replied. "Justin told me about them."
Again she nodded and took a deep breath before she slowly released it with a small whoosh and relaxed ever so slightly.
"Was that a Werewolf?" I asked and looked at her while I raised an eyebrow in question, praying that she would answer my question and tell me the truth. "Did I see one?"
"Yes," she said and nodded. "That was a-" She stopped talking when the brown thing appeared in the middle of the road, and she instantly slammed on her brakes while she jutted out her arm just to make sure that I didn't go flying into the windshield, even though my seat belt stopped me.
My heart jumped into my throat and continued to its runaway pace while I stared at the creature before me, my face pale but mixed with excitement while I stared into its dark brown eyes that seemed to only pay attention to me and no one else, not even Jill.
"-Werewolf."
