Chapter 26
"Robinson?" Jillian was too stunned to say any more than that How was he here? She was sure he would have been long gone by now.
Robinson lept to his feet. "Jillian! Where have you been?" he asked. He searched her face as if it would give him the answers he wanted.
She found her voice. "Why do you care? You wanted me to leave, remember?" She forced herself not to cry.
The pirate swallowed hard, looking uncomfortable. "I-I regret that." There was a long silence. Obviously, Robinson wasn't used to apologizing.
"That's all you have to say?" Jillian felt all her anger at him coming back up to the surface. She turned to walk right out but Robinson grabbed her arm. "Let go of me!" she snapped pulling away.
He released her but he moved to block her way. "No," he said. "I'm not letting you leave again-."
"Watch me," Jillian snapped. She let out a fustrated growl as he blocked her yet again. "If you don't move now, I'll blast you out of the way!" Jillian was so angry, she really felt like doing it. How dare he!
Robinson narrowed his eyes. "Do it." The two stared at each other for several tense seconds. Jillian hoped he would just give in but he didn't flinch.
Finally, she turned away. "Fine, I can't do it, okay? What do you want from me?"
"I want you to listen," Robinson said. He cleaned his throat before continuing. "I didn't mean it when I wanted you to leave. I was angry and hurt. Pysically-." He touched his abdomen and Jillian winced, remembering the frostbite she ahd given him.
"And emotionally," he said. "During the argument, I felt..." he paused. "I felt that you thought we weren't good enough for you...to help you and that we were failing." He lowered his head so that his bangs fell into his eyes. "That I failed in helping you."
Jillian was shocked. Of all the things he could say, this definetly wasn't what she expected. Perhaps he really did care.
"After you left, I realized that I needed you as much as-," he broke off and turned away. Jillian thought she saw his cheeks blaze red with embarrassment.
"So how did you find me?" Jillian asked tenatively, trying to cover up the awkwardness. She half-smiled as Robinson's usual scowl returned.
"It sure wasn't easy. We had to get some help. Unfortunately," he mumbled, shifting his feet.
Jillian blinked as she understood. "The Merry Men?" He nodded. "How do you know them?"
"Unimportant," he snapped, causing her to jump as his tone. "They told me you were at that tavern so we went to go get you and well..." He trailed off and Jillian flashbacked to the chaos that went down.
"Sorry about that," she said, blushing herself. "I was hiding in the closet."
Robinson smiled. "I know that," he said. He rolled his eyes at her stunned expression. "You were looking through that hole. I saw your eye glowing."
How could she have forgotten her eyes glow? Jillian wanted to kick herself. "And then?" she asked.
"I had the Pied Piper show his flute so you'd follow him. And then we're here. And now we're leaving." Without another word, he grabbed her wrist and pulled her out of the tent.
Jillian stumbled as he dragged her across the campsite. "Wait! Stop! Why are we leaving?"
"Leaving?!"
Robinson froze and Jillian almost crashed into him. She heard him mumble a few choice curses as the Pied Piper strode up to them. She felt a swoop of nerves as he winked at her. Jillian still wasn't sure what to make of him.
"I see you made up with your girlfriend," the man smirked.
Quick as a flash, the pirate dropped her wrist like he was burned. "She's not my girlfriend!"
"I-I'm not his girlfriend!" Jillian spluttered at the exact same time.
"Right. Anyway, you can't leave yet. You just got here! And I think there's someone else you want to see."
"No there isn't," Robinson growled. "Now get out of our way, Ben."
How does he know the Piper's name? Jillian thought, thoroughly confused.
"Now is that any way to treat your brother?" Ben asked with a pouty look, trying to ruffle the younger man's hair.
"Brothers?" Jillian gaped at them. They looked nothing alike. Robinson was blond and green-eyed and the Piper-Ben- was dark-haired and brown-eyed.
Robinson dodged his arm. "We're not brothers."
"Well, not by blood. Anyways-" The Piper stopped as a horn sounded throughout the camp. "Look who's here." All the Merry Men in the area turned to look as well. Robinson cursed again as a loud voice rang through the trees.
"IT IS I! I HAVE RETURNED!" A man lept out of a tree and strutted towards the center of the clearing. He was entirely dressed in green with a pointy hat with a red feather. He was middle-aged but had a lively air about him.
When he caught sight of their trio, he let out an estactic cheer. "He has returned! William, my boy! How are you?"
At first, Jillian had no idea who the man was talking to, but then he saw Ben stop Robinson from trying to hide behind him. "Your name is William?" she asked in disbelief. "Since when? And who is that?"
The pirate slumped, defeated. "That's Robin Hood. And he's my father."
